based academic organizations in the Paindisanay, the annual university literary-musical contests, on
Oct. 30 at the UPV Auditorium in Iloilo City.

The College of Mgt-based academic organization was then followed by Redbolts of the Division of
Social Sciences as overall first runner-up and Sotech (School of Technology) as overall second runner-

earn the champions title in the Poetry in Motion while Clovers and Redbolts came second and third
places respectively.

The “Rhythm & Blues” theme Creative Modern Dance competition, turned out to be the highlight of

ILOILO CITY — Hundreds of protesters from various organisations gathered in front of the Iloilo

Provincial Capitol last Friday to condemn the afflictions of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Martial-Law-

like government and commemorate the 46th anniversary of the infamous Marcos Martial Law.

About 700 activists from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), UPV Workers Alliance,

Piston Panay, Alliance of Health Workers, Bayan Panay, and other non-governmental organizations

(NGOs) joined the mass demonstration.

The rally, organised by the United People’s Action Against Dictatorship, commenced with the

marching of the activists from their respective rendezvous such as the UPV students who paraded

from the UPV Iloilo City Campus GCEB Building towards the Capitol at around 1 pm.

The protest program began with the ecumenical prayer led by Archbishop Emeritus Angel

Lagdameo, which also included mural painting, several cultural performances, a march along Iznart

Street, and burning of the Marcos-Duterte effigy as a symbolism of the people’s unity against the

malpractices of the government and another declaration of Martial Law.

Speeches were rendered by several leaders from Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action (JASAC), Jaro

Archdiocesan Pastoral Secretariat (JAPS), National Priest Organization Visayas (NPOV), Promotions of

Church People’s Response (PCPR) and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) elaborating

their stands against Martial Law and slamming the illnesses of the present administration.

The church has taken the side against both the controversial Marcos Martial Law and Duterte’s War

on Drugs, which they have noted a “façade” to both tyranny and human rights violation.

“We are on that side [human rights] — the Church and human rights,” a Dominican sister said.
She also told The Accounts that the admin should uphold the inviolability of human life and that one

should be brought to court first before being labeled as a criminal or a drug pusher, much less killed,

as a respect to human life.

Asked if she agrees that the Marcos era is considered as the “Golden Years” of the Philippines, she

responded: “I don’t know what they mean about ‘golden years’. May mga nagawa man siyang

proyekto, pero dahil doon [Martial Law], damo namatay, mas mabigat ang sa malain [bad side].”

Msgr. Meliton Oso contended that we should not move on with the multi-human rights violations

committed on the Martial Law era.

“Basta wala hustisya, wala move on, the issue will remain, the issue will reverberate,” he asserted.

Gabriela and women’s rights advocates were present as well, criticizing Duterte’s jokes on women

which they deem “insulting and degrading” and empowering women to stand against oppression

and humiliation.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros, who also graced in the gathering, lauded the Ilonggos’ rejection of the

president’s vulgarity during his visit in Cabatuan, Iloilo on June 20.

Duterte was stunned in the middle of his speech when the bells of the town’s church rang.

This has been a meaningful event to commemorate and hear the outcries of people.

On her manifestation, Hontiveros also slammed Malacañang’s claim against the opposition of being

the mastermind of the destabilization plot against the president.

The Akbayan senator pointed out that it is the president himself who is the ‘destabilizer-in-chief’

because of his non-stop attacks against his critics, the democratic institutions, and the economy

itself.

She then challenged Pres. Duterte to do his job amidst high inflation instead of wasting time on his

delusions on destabilization.

The PISTON Transportation Group likewise expressed their own sentiments especially on the rising

oil and commodity prices, heavy traffic, and jeepney phase out.
“Lahat nagsaka na — ‘yung bigas, oil, pati ngayon sa harina. Wala na, kulang na income namin. Di na

maka-eskwela ang kabataan,” he clamoured.

With the approval of TRAIN Law, most opinions from both poor and rich sectors call out for the

administration “to also take into consideration those from the laylayan” as they are “most affected”

by the economic decisions and policies implemented by the government.

“Kung magtaas ang presyo ng fuel, ng bigas, at iba pa, it is injustice for the farmers and the

unprivileged to experience this situation. The government should do something to combat poverty

and situations like this,” a private school student reasoned.

Farmers also voiced out their concerns regarding the existing system within the rice industry while

the budget cut for the health sector has triggered the group to take part in the mobilization, and

laborers appealed to end contractualization.

Several Martial Law victims have narrated their own accounts during the Marcos regime and noted

that the present situations are depicting martial law.

“The only difference between the Marcos Martial Law and what is happening today is that we have

an ‘undeclared’ Martial Law,” Msgr. Oso said in his speech.

He also mentioned that the government like the Marcos era instilled fear in the mind and heart of

the Filipinos and that everyone is afraid of the admin.

“Basta may kahadlok, may tyraniya. It is an undeclared martial law because we are afraid of the

police, we are afraid of the military,” he outcried.

An estimate of 300 students from UPV were present, with students from other public and private

schools, which then situates millennials to make up most of the rallyists.

Fr. Marco Sulayaw challenged the youth to also veer their focus on social issues and motivate others

to become responsible citizens, most especially to not let history happen again.

The September 21 Ilonggo mobilization generally aims not only to remember the horrors of the

declaration of Martial Law four decades ago but also to awaken consciousness and to reach out to

the government for eventual change each sector and activist wants to achieve.
LONDON: Russia “indisputably” now poses a bigger threat to Britain’s security than terrorist groups
like Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda, the head of the British army said in an interview published on
Saturday.General Mark Carleton-Smith warned Moscow had shown a willingness to use its military
to pursue its national interests while seeking to “exploit Western vulnerabilities.”

Relations between Russia and Britain have sunk to historic lows this year.

“Russia today indisputably represents a far greater threat to our national security than Islamic
extremist threats such as Al-Qaeda and (IS),” he told the daily telegraph.

“Russia has embarked on a systematic effort to explore and exploit Western vulnerabilities,
particularly in some of the non-traditional areas of cyber, space, undersea warfare.”

London has blamed the country’s military intelligence service for orchestrating the poisoning with a
nerve agent of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the English city of Salisbury in
March.

The incident prompted a wave of tit for tat diplomatic expulsions between Moscow and the West, as
well as a racketing up of US sanctions.

Carleton-Smith, 54, said following is battlefield loses in Syria and Iraq, the Western alliance must
switch focus to the threat posed by Russia and do so through NATO.

“The physical manifestation of the Islamt threat has diminished with the complete destruction of the
geography of the so-called Caliphate,” he said.

“We cannot be complacent about the threat Russia poses or leave it uncontested.

The former special force commander was speaking in his first interview since becoming Britain’s
chief of the general staff in June.

He made the unnecessary comments after visiting British troops deployed in Estonia as part of a
NATO battle group intended to deter aggression from neighboring Russia.

“The most important conventional military response to Russia is the continued capalities and
coherence of the NATO alliance.”

Carleton-Smith also took the opportunity to downplay the need for a separate European army, as
recently encouraged by French President Emmanuel Macron.

“I would not support any initiative that diluted the military effectiveness of NATO,” he has said.

“NATO represents the fundamental gravity of European security.

“It has been an extraordinarily successful alliance and, in my experience, we should reinforce
success.”
