PROPERTY CUSTODIAN
Summary
Property custodians are responsible for all materials within their organization or department.
Property custodian's job duties vary depending on the organization they are working for. Their main function is
to manage and be responsible for all of the property located within a particular organization or department. You
may find property custodians working in motion picture studios to college universities. Any business that wants
their property protected, organized and managed will be well suited to hire a property custodian.
Responsibilities
1. Property custodians receive any new or existing equipment in their department. They also store and
organize property. They must be able to check for any scratches, dents or damage to the property.
Duties also include labeling and identifying equipment, keeping a record of any prop that leaves their
department, and any property that's no longer needed. Examines incoming property for breaks and
flaws and notifies supervisor of damage.
Skills
2. Property custodians must be highly organized, and in some cases territorial as you are responsible if
equipment is lost, damaged or stolen. They must pay attention to detail, be timely and able to file using
multiple filing systems. They should have adequate writing skills and record-keeping abilities, and work
well under pressure. They must handle lots of data and also predict supply levels, reorder, and restock.
Computer knowledge of inventory control software is also suggested.
Education
3. Education requirements for a property custodian is a four-year degree. Though a degree in a specific
field is not required, holding a bachelors in business administration or management is helpful. For those
seeking higher degrees and a higher salary a master of business administration (MBA) is suggested.
Certificates in inventory and production management also helps gain employment (CIPM). Obtaining a
certificate inventory and production management requires you to sign up for a CIPM program, pass the
two exams offered and must meet membership requirements.
