TURNER-UCLA ALLIED HEALTH
INTERNSHIP
Program Description
The Turner UCLA Allied Health Internship is implemented by the UCLA
Community Engagement Program, in partnership with Bobby and Lauren
Turner, to provide learning opportunities for high school students and
recent graduates in finding out more about careers in the entry-level,
allied health professions. The one-week-long, summer internship
program is designed to address workforce shortages and offers career
education for students from under-resourced communities who express
interest in learning about health care career opportunities. For our
students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare, we offer a range
of shadowing opportunities from entry-level, clinical, and
administrative positions.

We want to highlight rewarding careers in healthcare that do not

require traditional four-year college education or medical school. Our
goal is to expose students to the many opportunities in healthcare,
with hopes that students will be inspired to pursue some of our
scholarship opportunities for the short-term allied health training
professions.

Through the Allied Healthcare Careers Program and the expansion of

the Turner-UCLA Allied Health Internship Program, we hope to inspire
many more students to enter the helping professions. Our Allied
Healthcare Careers Program has reached close to 90 high schools and
organizations to date, with established local partnerships with
community-based organizations such as Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA),
Kid City Hope Place, and UCLA YouthSource Center. This
transformative experience has shaped our students’ futures and will
impact countless others as the scholars begin their careers and deliver
skilled, compassionate care to patients in and around our community.

comprehensive yearlong high school internship program that combines
biomedical research with intensive college counseling guidance. Our
interns have access to college level didactic instruction in biology, SAT

SUMMER STUDENT RESEARCH
PROGRAM
Program Description
For over 40 years, the Summer Student Research Program has placed
talented high school and college students from diverse backgrounds
into local clinics and basic science labs to participate in active
biomedical research projects. Formerly affiliated with CHORI, now fully
integrated with the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, this
summer program provides a one-on-one mentorship with health care
providers and researchers, along with access to unique workshops,
seminars, trainings, simulations, and networking opportunities. The
program culminates in a formal research symposium in which each
student presents their project findings to the scientific community,
many of which continue on as future grants, publications, and
advances in healthcare. The overall goal of the program is to stimulate
interest in health sciences for under-represented students, arming
them with professional skills and confidence, thereby improving their
likelihood of success in STEM careers.

Activities Included in the Program:

Pairing with a mentor who will guide you through a clinical or basic
science research project. These projects will vary greatly based on
the mentor assigned to you.
Participate in a research program based on a structured curriculum
for 9 weeks.
Attend weekly seminars and meetings presented by MD's and PhD's
from UCSF or other regional healthcare systems with other CHORI
summer students.
A weekly intra-program journal club, wherein students read and
subsequently discuss a scientific paper.
Fun social activities curated by program leadership.
Present research findings at a one-day Research Symposium on the
last day of the program (typically the 1st Friday in August).

DUKE HEALTH PROFESSION
RECRUITMENT AND EXPOSURE
(HPREP)
Program Description
The Health Profession Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) is a
program that aims to provide professional development and mentoring
to historically underrepresented students interested in pursuing a
career in health care. With the help of dedicated volunteers, many of
whom are medical students and professional faculty, HPREP seeks to
provide not only role models who are pursuing careers in healthcare,
but also multiple experiences and interactions with medicine.

Sessions are held on Saturday mornings and include hands-on

activities such as CPR training and small group activities to allow for
team-building and interactions with mentors. During the group
sessions, mentors generally share their experiences, offer advice to
students, and provide feedback to students regarding writing, public
speaking, and interviewing. Many of our participants find this to be a
very valuable time.

Participants are required to compete in a case competition, perform a

mock interview, and submit a personal statement/reflection.

Eligibility
We accept applications from 9th – 11th grade high school students from
across the Triangle and central NC area who are motivated and
interested in medicine, allied health careers or science. This year we
WILL NOT be accepting applications from City of Medicine Academy
9th Graders. We will also NOT be accepting applications from any 12th
grade students due to a program shift.

change that makes our communities more equitable and just for young
people, especially young people of color. And it’s paying off with over
