Read and solve the following problems using the appropriate strategy. Show the hand written
solutions to your answers in black ink. Use long type writing paper.

1. Maria has scores of 94, 83 and 75 on three tests.What must her average score on the next
two tests be in order for her to have an average of at least 86?
Answer: So, Maria must score 89 on each of the next two tests in order to have an average
of at least 86 after taking all five tests.

2. One number (x) is three less than twice a second number (y).Six times the first number
decreased by twice the second is nine more than seven times the second. What are the
numbers?
Answer: The two numbers are x = 15 and y = 9.

3. The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is twelve.If the units digit is thirteen less than
four times the tens digit, find the number.
Answer: The tens digit (T) is 5, and the units digit (U) is 7. Therefore, the two-digit number
is 57.

4. Ten years ago, a godfather was three times as old as his godson.In six more years,the god
father will be twice as old as his godson.How old are they now?
Answer: The godfather is currently 58 years old, and his godson is currently 26 years old.

5. Julienne is making a collage for her MMW 101 subject. She used a rectangular
illustration board that measures 16in x 13in. She wants to have a 2-in border on every
side for decoration. What is the area covered by the collage?
Answer:
Area = Length × Width
A = 12 in × 9 in
A = 108

So, the area that covered by the collage is 108 square inches.
