(±"p, 0) on the x-axis are called the foci of the ellipse, which we denote by f1 and
f2 . Verify that γ (t) = (p cos t, q sin t) is a parametrization of the ellipse. Prove
that:
(i) The sum of the distances from f1 and f2 to any point p on the ellipse does
not depend on p.
(ii) The product of the distances from f1 and f2 to the tangent line at any point
p of the ellipse does not depend on p.
(iii) If p is any point on the ellipse, the line joining f1 and p and that joining f2
and p make equal angles with the tangent line to the ellipse at p.
1.1.7 A cycloid is the plane curve traced out by a point on the circumference of a circle
as it rolls without slipping along a straight line. Show that, if the straight line
is the x-axis and the circle has radius a > 0, the cycloid can be parametrized as
1.1.8 Show that γ (t) = (cos2 t − 21 , sin t cos t, sin t) is a parametrization of the curve
of intersection of the circular cylinder of radius 21 and axis the z-axis with the
