EXPANDING OUR PHILOSOPHICAL FRAMES:
WESTERN AND NON-WESTERN TRADITIONS
Western thought Eastern thought
Western thought being attributed to European while Eastern thought is Asian (mostly Indian and
(Early Greeks) and American thinkers Chinese).

Thinking is linear. The pattern of thinking occurs Thinking is circular. The pattern of thinking occurs
in a straight line (beginning to end). in cycle.

Just like the cyclical concept of birth-death-rebirth (Samsara

Theorize and speculate; no application of life is in Hindu tradition). There is not distinction between
necessary. philosophy and religion. If logic is no longer able to solve a
life problem, Asian mind resorts to intuition.
West vs. East
FILIPINO THINKING: FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL

•It might not be popular as

Chinese and Indian
philosophy, we also have
our own philosophy.
•These philosophy are
integrated to our values
system.
Loob: Holistic and Interior Dimensions
• Kagandahang-loob, kabutihang-loob, and kalooban are
terms that show sharing of one’s self to others.
• Loob puts one in touch with human beings.
• The values of unity, hospitality, pakikisama (camaraderie,
conformism), and respect to authority are such values
relates to persons.
• Filipinos believe in the innate goodness of the human
being.
• The Filipino looks himself as a self, as a total whole- as a
“person” conscious of his freedom, proud of his human
dignity, and sensitive to the violation of these two.
A leader or manager with magandang kalooban is
LEADER not passive but plays an active role in economic
development.

A leader should not just focus on the impact of job

performance but also treats every individual worker as persons
and not as objects.

A leaded should build respect among team members, building warm,

friendly relations, and recognizing the good performance of others
more frequently than criticizing performance problems..

A good leader motivate people to achieve economic success

giving them lakas ng loob to regard themselves in a positive
light amid misfortune, obstacle and unpredictability of the
economy.
Filipino Concept of Time
•Filipino believe in the concept of “gulong ng
palad”. He looks life as series of ups and
downs.
•The is reason behind his unmitigated
optimism. He looks to the future with hope
because life’s wheel cannot stay down
forever.
•It is also a misconception of Filipino time as
being late. Filipino farmers who rise early to
work in their fields disprove this idea.
Bahala Na
• Pre-Spanish Filipinos believe in “Bathala”. The
supreme deity who ensures that balance and
harmony.
• It was believed that humans could forge
personal relationship with this deity.
• This deity became the Christian God whom the
Filipinos put their trust.
• Bahala na literally means to leave everything
to God.
• Bahala na (come what may) , nonetheless, is
one of the most oustanding Filipino virtues. It
is one aspect perceived as courage to take
risks.
Other Filipino Values
•Reciprocating debts of gratitude
(Utang na Loob).
•Self-sufficiency for the sake of the
family to which one owes gratitude

PHILOSOPHY: TRANSCENDING AND
AIMING FOR A LIFE OF ABUNDANCE
•Abundance comes from the
latin term, abundance,
meaning, “to overflow
nonstop”.
•Abundance is outflowing
rather than incoming.
1. ABUNDANCE IS NOT WHAT WE GATHER BUT WHAT WE SCATTER

•Often, abundance is equated to

materialism but it is when we raise our
empty hands and surrender, when we
do not grab, when we are unattached to
anything or anyone, when we offer
oneself-all these are abundance.
•Only if we have empty hands can we
receive full blessings.
2. ABUNDANCE IS NOT WHAT WE KEEP BUT WHAT WE GIVE AWAY

•To live an abundant life, one must

pursue one’s desires and inner self.
•One must go after what fulfills,
before making more money. It is
truly paradoxical because to be
able to have, we must first let go.
•To be able to acquire, we must first
control ourselves.
3. ABUNDANCE IS NOT WHAT WE HOLD BUT WHAT WE SHARE

•Abundance is reminded us that money

should not matter much, for every moment
is a blessing, even if one does not have
money.
•Abundance comes to the who has money
and heart, money and values, money and
relationship, money and deeper happiness.
•Abundance is more than our ambitions;
there are more precious things such as
people that matter.
4. ABUNDANCE IS A CHOICE
As we aspire our dreams, we should try our best to be positive
in our thoughts, motives and effort.

Abundance, therefore, is a choice which translates into

commitment, determination and perseverance.

Abundance is more of an effort of the heart than mind alone.

5. ABUNDANCE IS TO EVOLVE INTO A HIGHER BEING.

•It becomes clear that the concept of abundance covers

both external and internal life.
•We cannot truly live without material considerations but
externals are not all there are; values, for instances,
matter.
•To live in abundance means evolving to a higher being in
following one’s mission; a deliberate or conscious desire to
act upon what can make us ad others happy.
