APPLICATIONS OF TRIGONOMETRY

1. The distance between vertical pillars is 100m and the height of one of them
is double of the other. The angles of elevation of their tops at the mid-point of
the line joining their feet are complementary. Find their heights.
2. An airplane is at an altitude of 1200 m. It was found that two ships are
sailing towards it in the same direction. The angle of depression of the ships as
observed from the aeroplane are 60o and 30o, respectively. Find then distance
between both ships.
3. A tower stands near an airport. The angle of elevation 𝜃 of the tower from
the point on the ground is such that its tangent is 5/12. Find the height of the
tower, if the distance of the observer from the tower is 120m.
4. If two towers of height x m and y m subtend angles 30o and 60o respectively
at the centre of a line joining their feet, then find the ratio of x and y.
5. The angle of elevation of a cloud from a point 200m above the lake is
30o and the angle of depression of the reflection of the cloud in the lake
is 60o. Find the height of the cloud.
6. A peacock is sitting on the top of a tree. It observes a serpent on the
ground making an angle of depression is 30o . The peacock catches the
serpent in 12s with the speed of 300m/min. What is the height of the tree?
7. As observed from the top of the light house, 100 m high above sea level, the
angle of depression of a ship sailing directly towards it, changes from 30o to 60o
Determine the distance travelled by the ship during the period of observation.
8. The angle of elevation of an aeroplane from a point on the ground is 45o.
After flying for 15 s, the angle of elevation changes from 30o. If the plane is
flying at a constant height of 2500 m, then find the average speed of the
aeroplane.
9. The angle of elevation of the top of a tower at a distance of 120 m from the
point A on the ground is 45o. If the angle of elevation of the top of a flagstaff
fixed at the top of the tower, at A is 60o, then find the height of the flagstaff.
10. An aeroplane, when 3000 m high, passes vertically above another
aeroplane at an instant, when the angles of elevation of the two aeroplanes
from the same point on the ground are 60o and 45o, respectively. Find then
vertical distance between the two aeroplanes.
12. the angle of elevation of a cloud from a point 60 m above a lake is 30o and
the angle of depression of the reflection of the cloud in the lake is 60o. Find the
height of the cloud.
