Exercise 2.2 Solutions

Topic: Zeroes of a Polynomial

1. Question:
Find the zero of the following polynomials
(i) (x - 7)
(ii) 6x + 5
(iii) (4x - )

Solution:
(i) (x - 7)
Zero of a polynomial is that values which makes the polynomial zero so
Taking (x - 7) = 0
x-7=0
x=7
So 7 is the zero of the polynomial. (1 mark)

(ii) 6x + 5
6x + 5 = 0

So is a zero of 6x + 5. (1 mark)

(iii) (4x - )=0

(1 mark)
2. Question:
Add the following polynomials:
5x2- 4xy + 7y2, 7x2 + 6xy - 3y2 and 6x2 + y2

Solution:
Sum = 5x2- 4xy + 7y2 + 7x2 + 6xy - 3y2 + 6x2 + y2
= 5x2 + 7x2 + 6x2 + 6xy - 4xy + 7y2 - 3y2 + y2
= 18x2 + 2xy + 5y2

3. Question:
In a drawing competition held in a school, a child draws a rectangle with length 4 metres more than
the breadth. Write the area of this rectangle in algebraic form.
What is value being inferred here? (V) (CBSE sample)

Solution:
Let the breadth of the rectangle be x.
Then length = 4+x
Area = length x breadth = x(x+4) = x2 +4x (1.5 marks)
The value inferred is logical thinking. (0.5 mark)

4. Question:
Verify that x = 2 is a zero of the following polynomials
(i) x2 - 4x + 4
(ii) x3 - x2 + x + 1
(iii) 2x – 4

Solution:
(i) Let p(x) = x2 - 4x + 4
Number p(2) = (2)2 - 4 2 + 4
=8-8=0
So, x = 2 is a zero of the polynomial.. (1 mark)
(ii) x3 - x2 + x + 1
Consider LHS = x3 - x2 + x + 1
Put x = 2
= (2)3 - (2)2 + 2 + 1
=8-4+2+1
=7
Therefore, x = 2 is not a zero of the given polynomial. (1 mark)
(iii) 2x - 4
Consider LHS = 2x - 4
Substituting x = 2
2 2-4=0
=4-4=0
So, x = 2 is a zero of the given polynomial. (1 mark)

5. Question:
The dimensions of the swimming pool are 92 m by 88 m and the contractor has to fix square tiles on
the floor of the pool. If the square tiles of side 25 cm need to be used the find the number of tiles
being used here.
What is the value being inferred here? (V) (CBSE sample)

Solution:
Number of tiles = (1.5 marks)
The value inferred here is problem solving. (0.5 mark)

6. Question:
Find the zero of the following polynomials
(i) (a + b)
(ii) 5y - 5

Solution:
(i) (a + b) Zero of a polynomial is that values which makes the polynomial zero so
Taking (a + b) = 0
(a + b) = 0
a=-b
So –b is the zeros of polynomial. (1 mark)
(ii) 5y - 5
5y - 5 = 0
5y = 5
Y=5÷5
Y=1
So1 is a zero of 5y – 5. (1 mark)

7. Question:
Find the zero of the following polynomials
(i) (x - 7)
(ii) 6x + 5
(iii) (4x -p)

Solution:

(i) (x - 7)
Zero of a polynomial is that values which makes the polynomial zero so
Taking (x - 7) = 0
x - 7 = 0
x = 7
So 7 isthe zeros of polynomial. (1 mark)

(ii) 6x + 5
6x + 5 = 0

So is a zero of 6x + 5. (1 mark)
(iii) (4x - p) = 0
4x = p

x = (1 mark)

8. Question:
Find the zeroes of the polynomial x3 + 3x2 + x +3 and verify the relation for possible integral zeroes.

Solution:
Let p(x) = x3 + 3x2 + x +3 The possible integral zeroes of p(x) are the factors of 3, i.e., 1, -1, 3 and -3.
Let us check for each of the values
p(1) = (1)3 + 3 (1)2 + 1 +3 = 1 + 3 + 1 + 3 = 8
The p(1) ≠ 0 P(- 1) = (-1)3 + 3(-1)2 + (- 1) + 3 = -1 + 3 – 1 + 3 = 4
The p(-1) ≠ 0 P(3) = (3)3 + 3 (3)2 + 3 + 3 = 27 + 27 + 6 = 60
Therefore, p(3) ≠ 0 P(-3) = (- 3)3 + 3 (-3)2 + (- 3) +3 =-27 + 27 – 3 + 3 =0
The p(- 3) =0.Therefore, x = - 3 is a factor of the given polynomial.

9. Question:
A farmer has a rectangular field whose area is given by x3 - 3x2 -4x + 12. Find the expression for
length and breadth of such a field.
What is the value being inferred here? (V) (CBSE sample)

Solution:
x3 - 3x2 - 4x + 12 = x2 (x - 3) - 4(x - 3) = (x2 - 4)(x - 3) = (x - 2)(x + 2)(x - 3) (1.5 marks)
The value inferred from this situation is analytical thinking. (0.5 marks)

10. Question:
Find the product of: (1/2 x2 + 1/3 x - 1) and (3/4 x3- 2/3 x + 1/9)

Solution:
11. Question:
Find the zero of a polynomial q(x) = ax – b.

Solution:
q(x) = 0 ax – b

ax = b
x = b/a
Therefore, b/a is the zero of the polynomial ax – b
