Text 2
The Origin of the Lake Singkarak
Once upon a time, there lived Pak Buyung with his wife and only child named Indra. They were
poor. Every day, the family earned a living by collecting forest products and catching fish in the
sea.
Indra was a diligent child but he had great appetite. He ate much. This made his parents worry
about running out of food.
One day, Idra felt hungry. Then, Pak Buyung asked Indra to work.
“Why don’t you go to the forest to get anything to be sold? So, we can buy food.” said Pak Buyung
to Indra.
Indra finally went working. Before leaving, Indra fed his pet chicken. The chicken named Taduang.
Taduang was a loyal chicken which would crow whenever Indra returned home.
After a full day working, Indra did not get anything in the forest. He felt very tired and hungry.
Meanwhile in the afternoon, Pak Buyung got some fish in the sea. After cooking, Pak Buyung and
his wife ate all the food without leaving it for Indra. Then, the couple fell asleep in the kitchen
with a full stomach.
Towards night, Indra came home. He saw his parents sleeping in the kitchen. Around them, plates
were scattered. No food left for him.
Indra was very sad thinking his parents did not love him. Indra walked out of the house. Taduang
crowed many times while flapping its wings to see Indra.
Indra sat on a rock. He wanted to fly away from his parents' house. When Taduang flapped his
wings again, Indra held Taduang's feet. He was carried flying into the air by Taduang. The rock
where Indra sat was also carried flying along.
After a while, the rock fell and hit the earth. The very hard impact formed a great hole. Sea
water quickly filled the hole and turned into a lake. The lake is now named Singkarak Lake.
