Title: Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test through Concrete.

Standard:
The code followed to perform this test is ASTM C597-16.

Scope & Significance:

This test utilizes the propagation speed of ultrasonic pulses through the material to detect
internal defects, cracks, and variations in concrete properties. It is commonly used in
construction and civil engineering to ensure the durability and safety of concrete structures,
aiding in maintenance, repair, and quality control processes.
Objective:
The objective of the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity test in concrete is to accurately evaluate the
potential structural defects within the material without causing damage.

Apparatus:
• Pulse Generator and Transmitting Transducer
• Receiving Transducer and Amplifier
• Time-Measuring Circuit
• Display Unit
• Reference Bar
• Connecting Cables
• Coupling Agent

Procedure:
At first, we attached the Transmitting Transducer cable to the Pulse Generator and the
Receiving Transducer cable to the Receiver Amplifier. Then the surface of sample was
smoothed by applying jell at its both ends. The Transducers were then placed at both ends
of the cylinder surface at hold tight. Then the apparatus was set at zero time. Then time
reading was then noted down shown on the time-measuring circuit by pressing the time
measuring button.
Observation:
𝑇𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛 = 𝑃. 𝐶. 𝐶 𝐶𝑖𝑟𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝐶𝑦𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟
Length of Cylinder = 20 𝑐𝑚 = 200 𝑚𝑚
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = 51.1 𝜇𝑠

Tester

Calculation:
As we know,
𝑉𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒/𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒

Here,
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑦𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟 = 200 𝑚𝑚

𝑼𝒍𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝑷𝒖𝒍𝒔𝒆 𝑽𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝒎𝒎/ 𝟓𝟏. 𝟏𝝁𝒔

𝑈𝑙𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑃𝑢𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑉𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 3.99 𝑘𝑚/𝑠
Readings by other groups:
Sr. No. 1 2 3 4 5
Length of Cylinder 200 300 200 200 200
𝑈𝑙𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑃𝑢𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑉𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 3.67 4.65 3.36 3.99 3.65

Results:
𝑉𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 3.99 (OK)
𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝐺𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔.

Comments:
A longer time of travel for the signal indicates the possible existence of a greater number of
voids within the sample, consequently leading to a reduction in signal velocity.
