1.1 Project Reference Documents

The project documents referenced in and or applicable are listed below.

Following Project Specifications are to be referred in addition to below mentioned

codes and standards:

2. Definition of Oily water sewer system

The following definitions shall be used:

Headers are sewer lines connecting manhole to manhole and carrying combined
effluents from collectors and/or sub-headers.

Sub-headers are sewer lines collecting the effluent from two or more sub-collectors
discharging to manholes on mains.

Sub-collectors are sewer branches collecting effluent from individual inlets such as
drains and catch basins.

Drains are small sewer inlets/interconnections (such as an open-end pipe or fitting)

discharging through a sealed connection to the sewer system from discrete sources,
such as pump bases, equipment drips, low points of floors, etc. but not from outside
surface drainage.

Open channel floor or pavement drains are continuous troughs or trenches collecting
surface drainage discharging to the sewer system.

Catch basins are used to collect surface drainage and process wastes individual
drainage areas and to trap sediments at the point nearest of the source.

Manholes are used in sewers as junction points and sediment traps and to provide
access for maintenance and inspection

Seals (minimum 150mm hydraulic) are used to prevent vapor emission out of inlets and
to isolate the various parts of a sewer system preventing vapor travel and spread of fire
or explosion.

Kerbed (or curbed) areas are pipes with raised curbs which control spillage and
drainage of storm, process and fire water.

Vents are pipes open to the atmosphere to prevent blowing of seals by pressure buildup

3. Oily Water Drainage System

This system collects rainwater or fire water from paved areas and bunded areas of
tank which may be contaminated by hydrocarbon products, such as:
• Wash down from non-oily equipment
• Fresh water drains
• Rain and/or fire water in process units
• Wash down of concrete paved areas
EPC for Installation of PWT, Republic of Iraq
DESIGN REPORT OF OILY WATER SYSTEM
Doc. No.: GB1516-SAC-240-CV-RP-0006 Rev.: A Page 6 of 10

The oil which will be contained in the bunded area of tanks would be controlled by the
valve before discharging into oily water sewer system.

The effluents collected in this system shall be led via underground pipes to the API
separator of the CPF for treatment. The velocity of flow in sanitary pipe based on the
design flow shall be maximum 1.5 m/s and min 0.9m/s
Oily water system shall be designed for the maximum of the following:
• Discharge from Rain + process flow to be eventually added
• Discharge from Fire water + process flow to be eventually added
Oily water drainage pipes are connected at tie-in points by each area. Tie-in points
are as per tie-in schedule.
Chemical drains shall not be done to OWS system and shall be trucked out. Chemical
pits shall be covered with acid resistant tiles and Acid proof mortar lining.

3.1. Manholes

Manholes shall be located:

• At changes of direction.
• At a junction of laterals with the plant mains.
• Additional manholes shall be provided so that manhole spacing does not exceed
50 m for sewers of 500 mm diameter and smaller, 100 m for sewers larger than
500 mm diameter.
• At any change in direction > 45°, at change of diameter or slope of any pipe and at
dead end of main sewer
• At all connections between sewers pipes, Tee or pipe to pipe connections are
allowed only for drain branches

For oily sewer system, all inlet pipes in a single compartment manhole shall be with a
submerged connection, which provides a hydraulic seal of minimum 150 mm in order
to avoid propagation of fire and/or gas. In Process/Utilities areas, all cover of closed
drain system manholes shall be sealed. All manholes with water seal shall be vented
by 4” pipes. In concrete paved areas, top of manholes shall be installed flush with the
paved surface. In other areas, top of manholes shall be approximate 150 mm above
grade. For storm water drainage system, Manholes shall be equipped with holed
cover for ventilation.

Systems handling flammable, toxic or lethal liquids or gases shall be provided with
solid vapor-tight sealed manhole covers.

3.2. Vents

Vents shall be provided in any manhole where the inlet lines are liquid sealed. The
highest manhole in a system shall also be vented.

Vents shall be 76 mm diameter steel pipe and shall terminate:

• 3.0 m above grade.

• 2.5 m above any operating platform within a 3 m radius.
• 2.4 m above a pipe way in process areas

Vents shall not terminate:

• Within 15 m horizontally of a furnace or other source of ignition.

• Within 8 m of electrical substations or inlets to a pressurized building.

Vents shall free drain back to the manhole.

4. Sizing Criteria for Underground Pipe Systems

For size of pipe for oily water sewer Chezy’s equation is used as mentioned in FEED design
and level of manholes and dimension are represented in detailed drawing of manhole

4.1 Hydraulic Calculations

Gravity, partially filled pipes & ditch shall be designed using the following Chezy
formula:

Q = 3600 x S x V

V = C (RI) 0.5

Where:
V - Velocity of effluent (m/s).

C - Bazin coefficient = 87 / (1+γ/R0.5 ).

Q - Design flow (m³/h).

S - Wetted cross sectional area of pipe (m²)

R - Hydraulic radius of pipe R = A/P (m).

P - Wetted perimeter of pipe (m).

I - Slope of line.

Roughness coefficient of pipe, γ (based on the material):

• Cast iron, ductile iron, steel, GRE : 0.05

• Concrete : 0.06
• Soil (in case of ditch) : 0.22

The drainage pipe shall be sized to flow at 100% of the internal height of pipe.
Calculation for 4-inch pipe at slope of 1:200 is attached in Annexure-I.
