MOCK -2 QUESTION PAPER WITH ANSWER KEY (JUNIOR GROUP)

Physics:
1) Heat is a measure of the amount of energy possessed by the molecules of the body.
Heating a body produces the following effects: (a) change in temperature of the body (b)
change in state of the body (c) change in size of the body. It is experimentally observed that
when a substance is heated it expands and when it is cooled it contracts. When a solid is
heated it expands in all directions. Increase in length of a solid is called linear expansion. The
increase in the length depends on original length of the rod, increase in the temperature and
material of the rod. If L0 is the length of a rod at 0℃ and its length at t℃ is Lt the increase in
length is given by (Lt – L0) = L0α t. The physical quantity ‘α’ is called coefficient of linear
expansion of that material and is different for each material, owing to which, different
materials expand at a different rate. When heat is supplied to a material body, it may
increase:

A) Only the kinetic energy of its molecules.

B) Only the potential energy of its molecules.
C) Either the potential energy or the kinetic energy.
D) Neither the potential energy nor the kinetic energy.

Correct Option: C) Either the potential energy or the kinetic energy.

2) If a long cubical metallic rod is heated strongly to a temperature of 150 degrees

centigrade there will be an increase in:

A) Only the length.

B) Only the breadth.
C) Both, length and breadth.
D) Length, breadth and height.

Correct Option: D) Length, breadth and height.

===========================================================

3) The SI unit of “coefficient of linear expansion” of that material will be:

A) Per kelvin.
B) Per degree centigrade.
C) Kelvin.
D) Degree centigrade
Correct Option: A) Per kelvin.

4) A copper rod (α = 16 x 10-6 SI units) has the same length as that of another brass rod (α =
24 x 10-6 SI units) at 0℃. When heated to go through the same rise in temperature, the
change in their length will be in the ratio:
A) 2:3
B) 3:2
C) √3 : √2
D) √2 : √3

Correct Option: 2:3

5) A substance expands on heating because:

A) Heat causes the molecules to swell up and become larger.

B) Heat causes the molecules to come closer to each other.

6) LASERS APPLICATIONS

Helium-neon lasers were the first lasers with broad commercial applications. As they could
be adjusted to generate a visible red beam instead of an infrared beam, they found
immediate use projecting straight lines for alignment, surveying, construction, and irrigation.
Eye surgeons use pulses from ruby lasers to weld detached retinas back. The first large-scale
application of lasers was the laser scanner.

Lasers have become standard tools in diverse applications. LED based laser pointers, and
laser target designators guide smart bombs to their targets. Lasers weld razor blades, write
patterns on objects on production lines, remove unwanted hair, and bleach tattoos. Laser
rangefinder probes profiled the surfaces of Mars and the asteroid Eros with unprecedented
detail. Lasers have helped physicists to cool atoms to within a tiny fraction of a degree
of absolute zero.

The first commercially viable lasers were:

A) Inert Gas lasers.

B) Ruby lasers.
C) LED lasers.
D) Dye lasers.

Correct Option: A) .Inert Gas lasers

10) FRICTION

Friction is the external force that opposes the relative motion between two surfaces in
contact and it acts on both surfaces. The main cause of friction is that it occurs due to
surface irregularities between the two surfaces in contact.

Many factors affect the friction between two surfaces, like the nature of the surfaces, which
means how hard the two surfaces in contact are pressed against each other.

Friction can be divided broadly into two categories - static friction and kinetic friction. Kinetic
friction is further divided into sliding friction and rolling friction.

Friction produces heat by constantly breaking the bonds between two surfaces which makes
the particles of both the surfaces vibrate. Heat is produced due to increase in kinetic energy.

Friction is a:

A) Contact force.
B) Non-contact force.
C) Conservative force.
D) Central force.

Correct Option: A) Contact force.

===========================================================

11) Ball bearings are used in machines to reduce friction because:

A) Static friction can heat up the machine.

B) Sliding parts require a lot of expensive lubricants to reduce friction.
C) Rolling friction is much smaller compared to static or sliding friction.
D) Ball bearings increase the area of contact between the surfaces.

Correct Option: C) Rolling friction is much smaller compared to static or sliding friction.

Chemistry:
1) WATER, OUR LIFELINE

All living organisms on earth use water to perform their life processes. Contaminants are
the suspended and dissolved impurities in water. Humans contaminate water by their
activities. Contaminated drinking water results in diseases like cholera, typhoid, etc.
Polluted water can sometimes be fatal.
