Unit 12 Appliance Circuits (Bakery)

Solutions to Review Questions

Note: Refer to the CEC or the blueprint package as necessary.

1. What section of the CEC refers specifically to air-conditioning equipment?

Section 28 (specifically Rules 28–700 to 28–714).

2. What section of the CEC refers specifically to appliances?

Section 26 and Section 8 (specifically Rules 26–740 to 26–750 and Rule 8–
300).

3. A cord-and-plug connected appliance shall not exceed 80% of a branch-circuit ampere

rating.

4. How many poles does a 15–30R receptacle have? Three pole, four wire.

5. A disconnect switch for a motor must be within sight and within 9 metres of the
motor controller.

6. Where a branch-circuit disconnect is used as the motor disconnect, it must be located

within sight and within 9 metres of the motor controller and motor.

7. What section of the CEC sets forth the requirements for the disconnecting means to be
in sight of a motor and/or the controller for the motor?
Section 28 (specifically Rule 28–604).

8. Circle the correct answer: The definition of “in sight” is that the disconnecting means
must be visible from the motor location (and) (or) be not more than 9 metres from the
motor location.

9. Conductors that supply a motor shall be sized at not less than 125% of the motor full-
load current rating.

10. Motor overload protection for a motor that is marked “S.F. 1.15” shall not exceed
125% of the motor full-load ampere rating.

11. What is the length of time that a time-delay fuse will carry five times its current
rating?
Generally, a TD fuse will carry a 500% overload for 10 seconds.
See Figure 17-7b.

12. When motors run too hot under overloaded conditions, the life expectancy of the
motor is cut in half for every 10°C that the motor is operating above the intended or
marked temperature rating of the motor.

13. A 4-ampere, dual-element time-delay fuse protects a motor that momentarily
draws 15 amperes when started. If the motor should fail to start, the fuse would protect
the motor from burnout by opening the circuit in approximately 17 seconds. Refer to
Table 12-2.

14. Motor #1 is marked Code B. Motor #2 is marked Code M. Both motors draw the
same full-load current. Which motor has the larger momentary inrush current when
started?
Code B = 3.15 to 3.54 kVA/hp Code M = 10 to 11.19 kVA/hp

15. The recommended ampere rating for a dual-element time-delay fuse for an 8-ampere
motor is 15 amperes. 8 amps x 175% (Table 29) = 14. However, fuses smaller than 15
amperes are not required.

16. The conductors that supply a group of motors must be sized at a minimum of 125% of
the largest motor, plus the sum of the full-load ampere ratings of the other motors.

17. A motor has a full-load ampere rating of 16 amperes. The preferred sizing for dual-
element time-delay fuses is (a) 125% of the motor full-load ampere rating. If, for some
reason, the characteristic of the installation is that the motor will be started and stopped
repeatedly, Table D16 of the CEC indicates that these dual-element time-delay fuses
could be sized at (b) 175% of the motor full-load ampere rating. In fact, if the repeated
starting and stopping nuisance blows the fuse size indicated in Table 29, Rule 28–200
allows the electrician to size the fuses at a maximum of (c) 225%. Fill in the blanks for
(a), (b), and (c), and select the fuse and disconnect switch sizes for the above alternatives.

a. 125% = 20 amp fuses and a 30 A disconnect

b. 175% = 25 amp fuses and a 30 A disconnect
c. 225% = 35 amp fuses and a 60 A disconnect

18. Three motors are connected to one feeder. Motor #1 draws 16 amperes. Motor #2
draws 11 amperes. Motor #3 draws 8 amperes. Calculate the minimum ampacity for the
feeder conductors that supply these motors. The terminals in the switches and in the
motor controllers are suitable for 75°C conductors. Type T90 Nylon conductors will be
used.
(16 x 1.25) + 11 + 8 = 39 amperes

The conductor size will be #8 AWG (based on the 75°C column).

19. What section of the CEC covers the subject of grounding?

Section 10.

20. The doughnut machine has a 2000-watt heating element plus a 2.2-ampere motor.

21. Calculate the current draw of an electric bake oven rated at 35 kilowatts, 208 volts,
three-phase.
I = P / (E x 1.73) = 35 000 / (208 x 1.73) = 97.27 A

22. What sizes and types of conductors supply the electric bake oven in the bakery?
#6 AWG T90 NYLON
16 000 / (208 x 1/73) = 44.64 amps 44.64 amps x 125% = 55.58 amps
Based on the 75°C column

23. Circle the correct answer: When selecting overcurrent protection for a motor branch
circuit, if no standard ampere rating given in Table 13 equals the value required for the
circuit, the next (higher) (lower) standard rating should be chosen.

24. When a motor controller’s nameplate indicates that a 15-ampere maximum time-
delay fuse is permitted for a given size overload relay, may a 20-ampere time-delay fuse
be used? No. May a 15-ampere circuit breaker be used? Yes. (Note: A motor FLA of 8.57
A is assumed for the question.)
