REVIEW
FACTOR THEOREM
If a polynomial f(x) has x-r
as a factor if P(r)= 0
In algebra, the factor theorem connects
polynomial factors with polynomial roots. The
theorem results from basic properties of
addition and multiplication.
EXAMPLE 1
Is (x+1) factor of
2x³+x²-2x-1?
SOLUTION
2x³+x²-2÷x+1
=2(-1)³+(-1)²-2(-1)-1 =

EXAMPLE 2
IS (x-1) a factor of
y= -x⁴⁰⁰+5x¹⁶⁰-6x?
SOLUTION
x⁴⁰⁰+5x¹⁶⁰-6x ÷ (x-1)
0= (1)⁴⁰⁰+5(1)¹⁶⁰-6(1)
0=1+5-6
0=0✓
YES X-1 IS THE FACTOR

x³+3x³+5x+6
SOLUTION
x³+3x³+5x+6 ÷ x+2
=(-2)³+3(-2)²+5(-2)+6 YES X+2 IS THE
=-8+12-10+6 FACTOR
=4-4
0=0
EXAMPLE 5
Is (x+2) factor of
x³+13x²+32x+20
SOLUTION
x³+13x²+32x+20 ÷ x+2
=(-2)³+13(-2)²+32(-2)+20 YES X+2 IS THE
=-8+52-64+20 FACTOR
=44-44
0=0
EXAMPLE 6
Is (x-2) a factor of
2x⁷-x⁴-240
SOLUTION
2x⁷-x⁴-240 ÷ x-2
=2(2)⁷-(2)⁴-240 YES X-2 IS THE
=256-16-240 FACTOR
=0
EXAMPLE 7
Is (x-2) a factor of
2x⁷-x⁴-240?
SOLUTION
2x⁷-x⁴-240 ÷ x-2
=2(2)⁷-(2)⁴-240 YES X-2 IS THE
=256-16-240 FACTOR
=0
EXAMPLE 8
Is (x+1) a factor of
4x¹⁰⁰+x⁵-3?

=8(9/4)+-12/2-12 YES 2x+3 IS
=72/4-6-12 THE FACTOR
=18-6-12
=0=0
EXAMPLE 10
Is x-1/2 a factor of
10x - 20x² + x -1x +
1?
SOLUTION
10x - 20x² + x -1x + 1÷ x-1/2
=10(1/2)-20(1/2)²+(1/2) -1(1/2)
= 1 10/2 -20(1/4) + 1/2 -1/2 + 1
=5 -20/4 + 1

0=1 THE FACTOR
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, factor theorems play a crucial role in
algebra and polynomial mathematics. These theorems
provide powerful tools for understanding and
manipulating polynomials, helping us find roots or
factors of polynomial equations. The Factor Theorem
and the Remainder Theorem are two fundamental
concepts that are closely related and frequently used in
algebraic and mathematical problem-solving.
CONCLUSION
These theorems enable us to simplify complex polynomial
expressions, identify roots, and factor polynomials, which are
essential skills in various fields, including calculus,
engineering, and computer science. Factor theorems also have
practical applications in solving real-world problems, such as
in electrical circuit analysis, control systems, and signal
processing, where polynomials are used to model and analyze
systems. By understanding and applying factor theorems,
mathematicians and scientists can make accurate predictions
and design efficient solutions to a wide range of problems.
CONCLUSION
In summary, factor theorems are invaluable tools
for the study of polynomials and have far-
reaching implications in various mathematical and
practical contexts. They allow us to gain deeper
insights into the structure of polynomial equations
and make the process of solving and manipulating
these equations more accessible and efficient.
