Project Summary
The Managing Art and Cultural Heritage in Global Markets (MAGMa) Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) is
designed to examine critically, and from multiple perspectives, the drivers and mechanisms that govern the
circulation and management of art and cultural heritage internationally in increasingly volatile and at times fragile
environments. Students will engage with multicultural tangible and intangible heritage and with diverse
organisations and systems involved in its management and circulation worldwide, which will offer the opportunity
for participants to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to engage with the field in an innovative, ethical
and sustainable way.
The primary outcome will be a multiple degree jointly designed, delivered, supervised and awarded by a
consortium of EU and UK partner universities along with contributions from a world-wide group of associate
partners that will offer placement experience and seasonal schools intended to explore key themes and issues
intensively. Staff mobility, for both lecturers and administrators, will also take place and enable professional
development, internationalisation of the curriculum and the exchange of good practice.
Utilising a multidisciplinary consortium with expertise from art history, cultural economics, management and law
(over four Intakes) MAGMa will give 150+ (including 80+ scholarship) master level students, from around the
world, access to a 2yr EMJM of 120 ECTS. There will be a minimum of three mobility periods in different EU
countries (Portugal, France and the Netherlands), access to placements, summer and winter schools within
world-class cultural institutions (in Italy, Russia, UK and India), new cultural experiences, exposure to languages
and enhanced employability in a complex and growing field.
