to reduce energy consumption in buildings, thus
reducing CO2 emission to the atmosphere. Meet the
following minimum EE requirements as stipulated in
MS1525:2007

Building Envelope
THERMAL RESISTANCE, R
• Heat energy flows from a hot object to a cooler object
• Whenever there is a temperature gradient, heat transfer will
always occur
• It can never be stopped, and it can only be slowed

BSA3633 Environmental Design

Week 03: PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGY
Passive Design Strategy

Building Envelope
THERMAL RESISTANCE, R
• Relationship between thermal conductivity, thermal resistance and
U-value

k = Thermal conductivity

R = Material thickness / k

U=1/R

• The higher the R, the lower the U, the better

Building Envelope
CONCEPT OF OTTV
• A design criteria for building envelope known as the Overall
Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) has been adopted.
• OTTV aims at achieving the design of building envelope to reduce
heat gain through the building envelope and hence reduce the
cooling load of the air-conditioning system.
• OTTV should not exceed 50 W/m2

WAYS TO IMPROVE OTTV

• Identify which component contributes the most to OTTV

• Review Solar Correction Factor (CF)
• Review glass selection and its Shading Coefficient (SC)
• Review sunshades and its Shading Coefficient
• Review WWR

Daylighting

Skylight
- Light reflected by atmosphere (clear blue sky)
- Diffused through clouds (overcast sky)

Reflected Light
- Sunlight or skylight reflected from ground, trees, buildings, etc.

BSA3633 Environmental Design

Week 03: PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGY
Passive Design Strategy

Daylighting

Sunlight
- Direct sun’s rays (Too strong to be used directly; must be reflected
or diffused)

Daylight Source
- We try to harvest light from the sky NOT the Sun.

• Provide good levels of daylighting for building occupants:

1. Demonstrate >30% of NLA has a daylight factor 1.0% - 3.5%

transport and distribute light deep into buildings and systems that
reduce the need for artificial lighting are recommended.
