Course Outcome:

Catalog Description
This course is designed to help students to understand the warehouse function, processes and
operations management. It includes analysis of important roles in entire supply chain, and
smooth functioning. It will help to understand warehouse layout design, materials handling
equipment selection and automation in warehouse. Also help student to develop key performance
indicators and sustainable best practices.

Course Content

Unit I: Fundamental of Warehouse Management 8 lecture hours


Overview of warehouse management, Need of warehouse, Functions and roles of warehouse,
Types of warehouses, Centralized and decentralized warehouses. Advantages of warehouse for
business. Challenges in warehouse operations. Job responsibility of warehouse manager.

Unit II: Warehouse Operations Management 10 lecture hours


Key operations of warehouse, inbound warehouse operation procedure, outbound
warehouse operation procedure. Warehouse location master and its importance. Documentation
in warehouse operation (GRN, put away, location master, picking, packing, and dispatch),
transport & E-way bill etc. Inventory management in warehouses, Materials return procedures.
Integration with other department. Coordination with vendors, freight forwarders, and
transporters. Team management.

Unit III: Materials Handling in Warehouse 10 lecture hours


Material handling procedures in warehouses, Types of materials handling equipment (MHE)-
mechanized, semi-automated and automated. AGV, Robotics, and AS/RS. Warehouse layout
design. Traffic management in warehouses. Safety procedures and practices in warehouses,
Emergency evacuation in warehouses. Security system in warehouse management.

Unit IV: IT Application and Automation in Warehouse 8 lecture hours


Information technology and automation in warehouse management. Warehouse management
system (WMS). Importance of WMS in LSCM. Application of ERP system in warehouses. Bar
code and RFID application. Industry 4.0 application in warehouse.

Unit V: Best practices and Cost Optimization in Warehouse 9 lecture hours


Cost optimization in warehouses. Best practices in warehouse. Customer relationship
management, call centers, helps desks, service desks, feedback and evaluation of service through
computers. Stock audit procedure in warehouses. Total quality systems and controls.
Productivity and performance measurements, TAT, KRA, KPI. Best utilization of storages space,
manpower, MHE.
