The Circulatory System

(PIE and Acronym

Approach)
by:

Andrew M. Famero, BSN, RN, MAEd Science

What
is Circulatory system?

Answer: It is the system

that transports blood,
fluids, and nutrients
composed of heart and
blood vessels .
Parts Of the
Circulatory
System:

a. Heart
b. Blood Vessels:
Artery and Vein
c. Blood
Definitions:
Artery-carries oxygenated
blood away from the
heart.

Vein- carries
deoxygenated blood
towards the heart.
Two Kinds of
Circulation:
a. Systemic Circulation –
Circulation of the blood away and
from the heart all through out the
body system.
b. Pulmonary Circulation –
Circulation of the blood within the
lungs and the heart.
The Systemic and
Pulmonary Circulation
Tracing the Pathway IN
ORDER is not easy…
Blood coming from the different
parts of the body will enter the
(1)SUPERIOR VENA CAVA and
INFERIOR VENA CAVA going to the
(2)RIGHT ATRIUM. From there it will
pass through (3)TRICUSPID VALVE
then enter to the (4) RIGHT
VENTRICLE.
From the RIGHT VENTRICLE,
BLOOD will go to the
(5)PULMONARY ARTERY and
subdivides to the (6)LEFT LUNG
and RIGHT LUNG for gas
exchange or OXYGENATION.
From the lungs, blood will
return to the heart via the
(7)PULMONARY VEINS.
From the PULMONARY VEINS, blood
will enter the (8)LEFT ATRIUM then go
the (10)LEFT VENTRICLE passing
again through another valve called the
(9) MITRAL VALVE. From the LEFT
VENTRICLE, blood will be pumped
out via the (11) AORTA and finally
transported to the (12) DIFFERENT
BODY PARTS to deliver oxygen and
nutrients and the cycle goes on and
on.
To easily memorize, simply draw a pie
(HEART) and make acronym for every
anatomical part:
ATRIA - upper half

VENTRICLES- lower
half

The Pacemaker (Sino-atrial or SA node)
The pacemaker or the sino-atrial node is the part of the heart that
regulates rhythm or pacing of heart beat. The SA node is the source
of electricity in inside the heart.

Leukocyte and Plasma
The Blood Contains:

1.Erythrocyte – or called red

blood cell (RBC)
2.Leukocyte – or white blood
cell (WBC).
3.Plasma –fluid portion of the
blood.
