 Inflation in Brief
1. CPI inflation General, increased to 27.6% on year-on-year basis in Jan 2023 as compared to an
increase of 24.5% in the previous month and 13.0% in Jan 2022. On month-on-month basis, it
increased to 2.9% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 0.5% in the previous month and an
increase of 0.4% in Jan 2022.
2. CPI inflation Urban, increased to 24.4% on year-on-year basis in Jan 2023 as compared to an
increase of 21.6% in the previous month and 13.0% in Jan 2022. On month-on-month basis, it
increased to 2.4% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 0.3% in the previous month and an
increase of 0.1% in Jan 2022.
3. CPI inflation Rural, increased to 32.3% on year-on-year basis in Jan 2023 as compared to an
increase of 28.8% in the previous month and 12.9% in Jan 2022. On month-on-month basis, it
increased to 3.6% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 0.7% in the previous month and an
increase of 0.9% in Jan 2022.
4. SPI inflation on YoY increased to 30.5% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 27.8% a month
earlier and 20.9% in Jan 2022. On MoM basis, it increased by 1.3% in Jan 2023 as compared to an
increase of 0.2% a month earlier and a decrease of 0.8% in Jan 2022.
5. WPI inflation on YoY basis increased to 28.5% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 27.1% a
month earlier and an increase of 24.0% in Jan 2022. On MoM basis, it increased by 1.8% in Jan 2023
as compared to a decrease of 0.7 a month earlier and an increase of 0.6% in corresponding month of
last year i.e. Jan 2022.
6. Figures 1 and 2 show graphically the yearly data of Table 1.a for Urban and Rural CPI while Table 1.1
shows “Period Average” and “YoY” percent changes in indices of three years.

7. Measured by non-food non-energy Urban increased to 15.4% on (YoY) basis in Jan 2023 as
compared to an increase of 14.7% in the previous month and 8.2% in Jan 2022. On (MoM) basis, it
increased by 1.4% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 1.2% in previous month, and an
increase of 0.8% in corresponding month of last year i.e. Jan, 2022.
8. Measured by non-food non-energy Rural increased to 19.4% on (YoY) basis in Jan 2023 as
compared to an increase of 19.0% in the previous month and 9.0% in Jan 2022. On (MoM) basis, it
remained same i.e. 1.5% in Jan 2023 as compared to previous month, and an increase of 1.2% in
corresponding month of last year i.e. Jan 2022.

Core inflation (Trimmed)

9. Measured by 20% weighted trimmed mean Urban increased to 20.9% on (YoY) basis in Jan 2023
as compared to 19.4% in the previous month and 10.6% in Jan 2022. On (MoM) basis, it increased by
1.5% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 0.8% in the previous month and an increase of 0.5%
in corresponding month of last year i.e. Jan 2022.
10. Measured by 20% weighted trimmed mean Rural increased to 27.8% on (YoY) basis in Jan 2023 as
compared to 26.4% in the previous month and by 10.9% in Jan 2022. On (MoM) basis, it increased to
2.1% in Jan 2023 as compared to an increase of 1.5% in the previous month and an increase of 1.1%
in corresponding month of last year i.e. Jan 2022.

I. National Consumer Price Index (N-CPI)

The National Consumer Price Index for January 2023 is increased to 2.88% over December 2022 and
increased to 27.55% over corresponding month of the last year i.e. January 2022.

 III. Rural Consumer Price Index (RCPI)
The Rural Consumer Price Index for January 2023 is increased to 3.62% over December 2022
and increased to 32.26% over corresponding month of the last year i.e. January 2022.

 V. Wholesale Price Index
The Wholesale Price Index for January, 2023 increased by 1.77% over December, 2022. It
increased to 28.53% over the corresponding month of the last year i.e. January, 2022. YoY and MoM
movements, from January, 2022 to January, 2023 are also graphed below in Figure 8.
