In the Philippines, martial law has played an important role in our history. It was a
decade-long political scenario that affected every facet of the country's social system. Many
ordinary people have been victims of oppression and tyranny as the military has taken complete
control of the country.
Numerous cases of killings and social injustice have been reported during these dark
times. That is why it is pivotal to remind not just the youth, but everyone about the horrors of
Martial Law to keep it from happening again, this play showcased what the Filipinos truly went
through as a result of this heinous and immoral movement. As i was watching the play, I realized
that I need to be better, I want to contribute something meaningful to our society, something that
would actually help lives and promote welfare. Personally, the play was a symbol of nationalism,
it reminds us to not let our nation fall into crumble all over again. I have also noticed that they
demonstrated the part where Marcos silenced the opposing voices and established a media
channel under his control, suppressing public criticism and controlled the information that the
public had access to; as a result, Marcos had the final say in what passed for truth. It was
horrifying how he felt zero remorse for what he did. The repercussions of Martial Law have been
so catastrophic that we are still feeling the effects today. By the time Marcos was ousted from
Malacanang, the Philippine economy had suffered as a result of corruption and significant
borrowing from foreign countries. Poverty rates skyrocketed, the peso's value plummeted, and
the country's reputation plummeted. To be honest, we are all still paying for trillions of dollars in
debt today.
We should encourage each and everyone to give awareness about the atrocities of this
movement, may it be virtual or actual, lets us not forget our history, when we allow people to get
away with abusing their rights, freedom, and power, we are killing justice and accountability.
When we allow criminals to rewrite our history and suddenly become heroes, we are killing our
history and identity. When you allow someone like Marcos to shamelessly deny and lie about
what his family has done since the Martial Law declaration, it is disrespectful to the victims of
their abuse and corruption. “Moving on is not an option, not until justice is served. If Marcos is a
hero, we would gladly be the villains” (Algo,2021). Let this be a lesson to all of us to be the
living examples of “Never forget, never again”.
