CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURE

This chapter discusses the outline of the research methods that were followed

throughout the study. The researchers define the research design that was chosen for

the purpose of this study. This chapter also includes the respondents of the study, the

instrument to be utilized, the investigation and data-gathering procedures adopted, and

the statistical treatments to be applied in the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used quantitative research design by conducting surveys

through printed questionnaires given to the Grade 11 STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics) students of St. John Academy of Visual and

Performing Arts.

The researchers made use of descriptive survey method to determine the

situation in the current phenomenon. Descriptive survey method is a research method

that tries to describe a phenomenon, an occurrence, and an event that happens in the

present. This method will be illustrated to seek for detailed and factual information

about the object of the research. In conducting this study, quantitative research design

will be used to collect and analyze numerical data for making predictions. To

accomplish the quantitative research design, questionnaires with questions in relation

to the title will be distributed.

Thus, since the extent of this study is to understand and analyze the present

status of the profile of the respondents from Grade 11 STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics) students, the research design is assumed to be suitable

to use.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The Grade 11 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

students from St. John Academy of Visual and Performing Arts were chosen by the

researchers as the respondents of the study. The researchers placed a set of fifty (50)

respondents to answer the questionnaires. The set consists of ten (10) students from

Grade 11 STEM Osias, ten (10) students from Grade 11 STEM Zara, ten (10) students

from Grade 11 STEM Gomez, ten (10) students from Grade 11 STEM Del Mundo,

and ten (10) students from Grade 11 STEM Escuro.

RESEARCH LOCALE

This study is limited only to the Grade 11 STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, and, Mathematics) students at St. John Academy of Visual and

Performing Arts, in the school year of 2023-2024. Students from Grade 11 STEM

strand were selected to respond to the survey questionnaire. The survey will be

conducted inside the classrooms of the selected students inside the said school.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The goal of the study is to know the effects of lack of internet access towards

the academic performance of selected Grade 11 STEM students in St. John Academy

of Visual and Performing Arts.

In conducting this study, questionnaires are the primary research tool made to

be distributed to the selected respondents. The questionnaire is divided into three (3)

parts. The first part is about the demographic profile of the respondents, it asks about

the personal information of the respondents such as gender and age. The second part

is about the potential effects of lack of internet access in terms of academic

performance, productivity, and experience of students. The third and last part is about

the common application of internet access that affect the academic performance of

students such as data gathering, presentation, and communication.

In knowing the description response of the respondents, they are to answer

from 1-5. The highest being 5 as strongly agree, 4 as agree, 3 as neutral, 2 as disagree,

and the lowest being 1 as strongly disagree. This will be answered on the

questionnaire by the respondents of the study

VALIDATION OF THE RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The questionnaire will be prepared by the researchers and presented to the

practical research teacher for evaluation. The questionnaire should be approved by the

teacher. The teacher will provide proposals to improve the research and correct any

errors in the questionnaire. The questionnaire has six (3) parts about how the lack of

internet access affect the academic performance of the selected Grade 11 STEM

students in St. John Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. The questionnaires will

be completed, and the papers for surveys will be distributed by the researchers. The

respondents will answer the questions there.

RELIABILITY OF THE STUDY

The final draft of the questionnaire will be the printed-out survey

questionnaire and the researchers will ask the selected respondents for their response

to be put in there. The response of the respondents will be collected through the

survey questionnaire. To ensure the reliability of this study, the respondents will be

randomly selected in the Grade 11 STEM department of St. John Academy of Visual

and Performing Arts.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

This study was provided with permission before conducting the survey inside

St. John Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. The researchers asked for

permission from the subject teacher first, then proceeded to the school principal for

approval. The selected respondents are from the Grade 11 STEM students of the said

school.

The researchers used printed questionnaires to make the survey easier. It was

distributed to fifty (50) students in five (5) different sections of Grade 11 STEM.

Students were asked to rate how strongly they agreed or disagreed with each survey

statement. They rate each statement from strongly agree to strongly disagree by

putting a check on each row of the questions. Since the schedule of the respondents is

not the same with the researchers, some researchers went to school early to distribute

the questionnaires. The information acquired was used to produce data, perform

statistical analysis, and learn more about respondents' viewpoints.

Since the researchers value the respondents' availability, they gave them an

unlimited amount of time to respond to the questions, and the gathered data will

remain confidential.

ADMINISTRATION OF THE STUDY

This research needs a lot of respondents to answer the series of questions

given by the researchers that would help them to know the effects of a lack of internet

access on the academic performance of selected Grade 11 STEM students at St. John

Academy of Visual and Performing Arts.

To conduct this study, the researchers need the approval of the head of the

school and the subject teacher before they start the survey with the respondents, which

are the selected Grade 11 STEM students at St. John Academy of Visual and

Performing Arts. When the survey is done, the researchers will tally and evaluate the

answers of the respondents.

SCORING OF RESPONDENTS

The given data by the respondents will set into a table to analyze and to

interpret the weighted values that are shown below.

Table 2: Scoring of Responses

Scale Mean Rating Verbal Interpretation

5 4.01 - 4.50 Strongly Agree

4 3.51 – 4.00 Agree

3 3.01 – 3.50 Neutral

2 2.51 – 3.00 Disagree

1 2.00 – 2.50 Strongly Disagree

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA USED

The researcher created the questionnaire and planned on the distribution of the

questionnaire to the respondents of the study to gather and evaluate the questions

posted on the statement of the problem. This is done for efficiency and clarity of the

data gathered. In order to get the defined answer and the interpretation to the

problems framed the following tools were used;

1. Percentage Distribution is a distribution of frequency where the separate

class frequencies in a percentage distribution are stated as a percentage of the

total frequency and also equal to 100. In this study, the profile of the

respondents was presented using percentage.

Formula: P= F/nx 100

Where:

P- Percentage
F= Frequency

N= Number of Respondents

2. Weighted Mean This is the tool used to review and rank the outcome of the

arranged data from checking points and respondents’ perceptions of the

research.
