CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

A school serves as a vital hub for learning, promoting the intellectual, emotional,

and social development of students. It is a physical space where educators and learners

converge, creating an environment conducive to knowledge acquisition and personal

growth.

A canteen is a store that sells food and drinks at an institution like a camp,

college, or military base. Some are selling also personal items to personnel at an

institution, school, or camp, etc. This is the area that is created inside the school which

order to secure and consider the nutrition of those students and the people within it.

Moreover, it is important to have an active mind and body every day to fulfill such school

activities.

Satisfaction is a person's feeling of appointments or disappointments resulting

from comparing a product's perceived performance concerning his/her expectations. If

the performance falls short of expectations, the customer is dissatisfied. If the

performance matches the expectation customer is satisfied (Sigua, 2017)

Many individuals around the world, if not all, consider certain factors when

choosing a school, that's why the satisfaction of students is crucial for the overall success

and effective functioning of any educational institution, one of these factors is the

school's canteen. A school's canteen plays a crucial role in the overall development and

well-being of students. It serves as a place where students can have a pleasant dining

experience and meet their nutritional needs.

According to (Sigua, 2017), the Department of Education is responsible for giving

and supporting the student's health and well-being through its curriculum. Moreover, it

encouraged the schools to implement some complete health programs, including food and

health nutrition education. The researcher said the that canteen should serve as the place

or venue for the development of eating habits, in addition, the canteen should also serve

as the laboratory for Home Economics which will provide hands-on training for the

students and employees on planning, purchasing, and preparation of safe nutritious

meals.

The Department of Education is also strongly committed to supporting student's

health and well-being through its curriculum in schools and a range of initiatives that

offer opportunities for physically fit individuals who love eating healthy food. Schools

are encouraged to implement comprehensive health and well-being programs, including

food and nutrition education. They help eliminate malnutrition and serve as an avenue for

the development of desirable eating habits among students. Under Dep. Ed. Order No 14.

S, 2005, the Instruction to Ensure Consumption of Nutritious and Safe Food in Schools

that all schools must have school canteens is indicated. This is reiterated by Dep. Ed

Order No. 8 s of 2007 implementing guidelines on the school canteen. Canteens should

serve as venues for the development of eating habits

As stated under Presidential Decree No. 856 Code on Sanitation of the

Philippines, a food establishment should include sanitation requirements for food service

structures and facilities. It describes the requirements for food handlers as well as

regulations after using toilet and washing facilities, and disposal of refuse and vermin

control. Therefore, All canteens have the responsibility to provide safe food that it has

prepared, cooked, transported, and served in a way that will retain nutrients and minimize

bacterial contamination and growth., This emphasizes the need for food establishments,

including school canteens, to meet specific sanitation requirements. These requirements

encompass the proper sanitation of food service structures and facilities. These also

address regulations for food handlers, such as guidelines for using toilets and washing

facilities, as well as disposal of refuse and vermin control. By enforcing these regulations,

the school's canteen can ensure the provision of safe and hygienic food to the students.

Furthermore, Article 8 of the Local Government Code emphasizes the

responsibility of the health officer to conduct sanitary inspections of all business

establishments that sell food, including school canteens. This emphasizes the importance

of regular inspections to ensure compliance with the sanitation code. These inspections

should assess the cleanliness of the canteen, the condition of the equipment and tools

used, and the overall adherence to proper food handling practices. By conducting these

assessments, the canteen can maintain high standards of sanitation and guarantee a safe

environment for the students.

This study aims to assess the satisfaction level of students with the school canteen

services at LIFE Inc. To achieve this, it is crucial to consider various factors such as

hygiene, facilities, service quality, and food safety. By evaluating these elements, the

school can identify areas for improvement and take necessary steps to enhance the overall

experience for students. This will ultimately contribute to their satisfaction and ensure a

safe and enjoyable canteen environment

The assessment of the student's satisfaction level is crucial for several reasons.

First, it enables the school to gauge the effectiveness of the canteen's services in meeting

the student's needs and expectations. By understanding the students' satisfaction level, the

school administration can identify areas for improvement and address any concerns or

issues raised by the students. This feedback-driven approach allows for continuous

enhancement of the canteen's operations and ensures that the students' dining experience

is enjoyable and fulfilling.

Additionally, assessing the students' satisfaction level provides an opportunity for

students to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the quality of the food, facilities,

and services provided by the canteen. This encourages open communication between the

students and the canteen management, fostering a collaborative environment where the

students' feedback is valued and taken into consideration. The students' satisfaction

should be the primary focus of the canteen's operations, as it directly impacts their overall

well-being and academic performance.

In addition to student satisfaction, the assessment of the canteen's services aids in

ensuring the safety of the students. Through regular inspections and assessments, the

canteen can maintain the proper handling and preparation of solid foods, beverages, and

other products it sells. This helps to prevent any health issues that may arise from the

consumption of contaminated or improperly prepared food items. By prioritizing safety,

the canteen creates an environment where students can enjoy their meals with peace of

mind, knowing that their health and well-being are being safeguarded.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to assess the students' satisfaction level with the school's canteen

at LIFE Inc. Despite being an integral part of the students' daily routine, the canteen's

quality, variety, affordability, and overall experience are crucial factors that impact

student well-being and academic performance.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

3. What is the best way to improve the school canteen?

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study may provide vital information regarding the Canteen

services and its level of satisfaction experiencing by the students at LIFE Inc.

Furthermore this study aimed to determine the status of the school canteen, particularly

identifying the aspects in the operation that should be improved

Moreover, it is hoped and expected that the result of this study would be highly

significant and beneficial to the following:

Students. This would be helpful to have a particular anatomy of satisfaction of

the canteen services as the outcomes would give awareness and knowledge about the

students level of satisfaction and the students will be able to asses it.

School Management. This will be helpful to give the school a detail depicted in

terms of canteens services. The outcomes may give them new encouragement and

motivations for the improvement and enhancement of the school canteen. It might also

help the advancement of the good relationship of the school and students.

Canteen Staff. This will be helpful to the canteen staff as it will give them an

insight on their shortcomings and what they can improve in order to give a more positive

and fulfilling service and experience to the school and increase the student’s satisfaction.

Parents. This would give the parents ideas about their children level of

satisfaction in the canteen services as they would be able to know on how the treatment

given by the canteen staff to their children and how it affect to their children on

consuming those products.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a basis for those researchers as an

additional information about the level of satisfaction on school canteen services of the

students at LIFE Inc. The study can also open in development of this study. The ideas

presented may be used as reference data in conducting new research or in testing the

validity of other related findings. This study also serves as their cross-reference that will

give them a background or an overview

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the level of satisfaction of the students at LIFE Inc of the

school canteen and is limited within the Students of LIFE Inc.

This study will be conducted through the utilization of google form questionnaires

with close ended questions, through printed questionnaire surveys, and through interview

as a survey and reference.

Definition of Terms

With the purpose of clarity and better understanding of this study, the following

terms are defined operationally.

Canteen. It is the designated area within the school where students can purchase

and consume food and beverages during specific hours.

Canteen Facility. It refers to the physical infrastructure of the canteen, including

seating arrangements, cleanliness, food storage and preparation areas, availability of

basic amenities like water and restrooms, and any other facilities that directly impact the

overall functioning and accessibility of the canteen.

Level of Satisfaction. This refers to the subjective assessment made by students

regarding their overall contentment with various aspects of the school's canteen facility.

This assessment may include factors such as the quality and variety of food options,

pricing, staff behavior and customer service, cleanliness, waiting time, and overall dining

experience.

Students. refers to the individuals enrolled in educational programs within LIFE

Inc. who utilize the school's canteen facility. These individuals may vary in academic

levels, age groups, and backgrounds.

Services. refers to the range of offerings provided by the canteen staff to the

students. This includes the process of food preparation, staff behavior, customer service,

maintaining cleanliness, managing crowd flow during peak hours, and any additional

features offered by the canteen to enhance the overall dining experience
