following: language form, duration of interaction, relationship of speaker, role and responsibilities of the
speaker, message and delivery.(Subtask: Explain speech style)

II. Background Information for Learners

Speech is essential to human. It affects who we are and how we develop as individuals, how we learn
and communicate what we know, and how we interact with others in our world. When we speak there is always
a reason, which includes the purpose, audience and the situation, or event.
Speech style according to Martin Joos (1976) a linguist and German professor, it refers to the form of
language that the speaker utilized which is characterized by the level of formality. Moreover, these are patterns
of speaking characterized by distinctive pronunciation, vocabulary, intent, participants, and grammatical
structured. The purpose is to help people know the specific approach that they should use in every situation to
prevent any untoward misunderstandings and arguments.
There are five speech styles. These are intimate, casual, consultative, formal, and frozen. Intimate
speech style is private, which occurs between and among close family members or individuals. Casual speech
is common among peers and friends. Consultative speech is the standard one. Professional or mutually
acceptable language is a must in this style. Formal speech is used in formal settings. It uses formal words and
expressions. Lastly, frozen speech is “frozen” in time and remains unchanged.
