 1. Executive Summary.
During the three-month field attachment at the Applied Informatics Department, I had the
opportunity to work with Migori County Government ICT Department. The attachment took
place from 8th May 2023 to 30th July 2023. The objective of the attachment was to gain practical
experience and apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the academic program.
Throughout the attachment, I was involved in a variety of activities and projects related to
Networking, hardware, software and database management. These activities allowed me to apply
technical skills and enhance my understanding of real-world scenarios in the field of Informatics.
One of the major projects I worked on the Trade Department was Networking project. In this
project, I collaborated with the networking team to setup, configure, and troubleshoot the
network infrastructure. This involved tasks such as installing and configuring network devices,
ensuring proper connectivity, and resolving network issues.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to learn from the county’s IT programming officer, he
enlightened me on programming languages especially python .
During the attachment, I applied various technical skills, including networking concepts,
hardware troubleshooting, data entry using county’s integrated software and database
management. I also acquired new skills such us network devices configuration, hardware
maintenance and Python programming.
Collaboration and communication played a crucial role in the success of the attachment. I
worked closely with networking team, IT officer, and other colleagues to ensure effective
teamwork and project coordination. Communication channels such as team meetings, emails and
collaboration tools were utilized to facilitate smooth information exchange

During the three-month field attachment at the Applied Informatics Department, I had the

skills such us network devices configuration, hardware maintenance and Python programming.

The field attachment at Migori County Government ICT Department was an essential
component of the Bachelor of Science in Informatics program at Rongo University. The
purpose of the attachment was to provide practical experience and allow me to apply the
knowledge and skills gained throughout my academic studies.

The attachment aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts learned in the
classroom and their practical application in a real-world setting. It provided an
opportunity to gain hands-on experience, work on actual projects, and collaborate with
professionals in the field of Informatics.

2.2 Objectives and Scope of the Report

The objectives of this report are to document and reflect upon my experiences, activities,
and projects during the three-month field attachment. The report will provide an
overview of the company/organization where the attachment took place, describe the
tasks and responsibilities undertaken, highlight the technical skills applied, discuss

The scope of this report covers the duration of the field attachment, from 8th May 2023

3.1 Brief Introduction

The field attachment took place at Migori County Government ICT Department, a
government organization responsible for managing and maintaining the county's
information and communication technology infrastructure. The ICT Department plays a
crucial role in supporting various county operations, including administrative processes,
service delivery, and public engagement.

As a public institution, Migori County Government is committed to utilizing technology
to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in its operations. The ICT
Department serves as the central hub for ICT-related activities, providing technical
support, network infrastructure management, software development, and database

the benefit of the residents and stakeholders.

The organizational structure of Migori County Government consists of various

departments, each responsible for specific functions and tasks. The ICT Department
operates under the County Secretary's Office and is headed by the County ICT Officer.

Within the ICT Department, there are specialized units and teams responsible for
different aspects of information and communication technology. This includes the
Networking Team, Software Development Team, Database Administration Team, IT
Support Team, and Digital Transformation Team.

For the purpose of this attachment, I primarily worked with the Networking Team and
collaborated closely with the IT officer. The Networking Team is responsible for
planning, implementing, and maintaining the county's network infrastructure, ensuring
seamless connectivity and reliable communication across various departments.

 Complex hardware troubleshooting: Some hardware issues required in-depth diagnosis

and troubleshooting due to their complexity. Identifying the root cause and resolving
these issues posed a challenge initially.
 Time management: Balancing multiple projects, tasks, and deadlines required effective
time management skills. It was challenging to prioritize and allocate time efficiently to
ensure timely completion of assignments.
 Adapting to new technologies: As new technologies were introduced during the
attachment, adapting to them and understanding their intricacies presented a learning

12.2 Lessons Learned From Overcoming Challenges

 Persistence and research: To overcome complex hardware issues, I developed a

methodical approach by conducting thorough research, seeking guidance from
experienced colleagues, and utilizing online resources. This taught me the importance of
persistence and resourcefulness in problem-solving.
 Prioritization and time management: Through experience, I learned to prioritize tasks
based on their importance and urgency. Implementing effective time management
strategies, such as creating task lists and setting realistic deadlines, helped me overcome
the challenge of balancing multiple responsibilities.

13. Conclusion

In conclusion, the three-month field attachment at the Migori County Government ICT
Department provided me with a valuable opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge,
develop practical skills, and gain insights into real-world IT practices. Throughout the
attachment, I actively participated in various projects, tasks, and daily routine activities,
contributing to the organization's technological capabilities and service delivery.

I successfully completed projects such as Trade Department Networking , showcasing my

technical skills and achievements. I faced challenges along the way, but through
perseverance, collaboration, and continuous learning, I overcame those challenges and
achieved notable milestones.

The attachment experience allowed me to acquire new technical skills, deepen my

understanding of networking, hardware troubleshooting, software development, and
database management. It also fostered professional growth, enhancing my
communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

I am grateful for the guidance, mentorship, and support received from the IT officer and
colleagues throughout the attachment period. Their expertise, collaboration, and feedback
were instrumental in my learning and development.

Overall, the field attachment provided a rich learning experience, bridging the gap
between theory and practice. It equipped me with valuable skills, knowledge, and

14. Recommendations
Based on my field attachment experience at the Migori County Government ICT
Department, I would like to make the following recommendations for future
improvements:

Enhanced Training Programs: To further enhance the attachment experience, it would be

beneficial to implement structured training programs that cover a wide range of technical
skills and industry-relevant practices. These programs could include hands-on

 workshops, guest lectures from industry experts, and opportunities for certification in
specific areas of computer science.

Mentorship Programs: Introducing formal mentorship programs would provide valuable

guidance and support to attachment students. Assigning experienced professionals as
mentors would enable students to receive personalized advice, insights, and career
guidance throughout the attachment period.

Collaboration with External Organizations: Creating partnerships with external

organizations or industry players would offer attachment students exposure to diverse
projects, technologies, and best practices. Collaborating with other organizations could
provide additional opportunities for learning, networking, and broadening students'
understanding of the field.

Continuous Evaluation and Feedback: Implementing regular evaluation mechanisms and

soliciting feedback from attachment students would facilitate ongoing improvement of
the attachment program. Feedback sessions could be conducted periodically to assess the

To the university
I recommend that Rongo University should do proper arrangements and earlier planning for the
students who intend to undertake industrial attachment and provide them with the necessary
requirements for their attachment
The university should try as much as possible to organize and post students to various
organizations instead of students looking for places of undertaking attachment on their own.
The university should start contacting the students undertaking industrial attachment as early as
possible to avoid disorganized and late rushing assessment.

By considering these recommendations, future field attachment programs can be further

enhanced, providing students with a more enriching and comprehensive learning
experience.
