Good Day

Everyone
What is a poem?
A poem is a piece of writing that relies on rhyme, rhythm and meter to evoke
feeling, or to convey setting and story. There are dozens of different poetic
forms, such as verse, haiku, sonnet, and ballad. Although poems aren’t
defined by their forms, they are distinguished by them.
The first types of poems were epic

Epic Poems
Epic poems are poems of extraordinary length that usually follow
a hero’s journey across a vast, and often mythological world.

Examples of epic poems: The Epic of

Gilgamesh (Sumeria), Beowulf (England), The Iliad (Greece), The Od
yssey (Greece), The Mahābhārata (India), The Ramayana (India), an
d The Divine Comedy (Italy).
Sonnet - a short rhyming poem with 14 lines. The
original sonnet form was invented in the 13/14th century
by Dante and an Italian philosopher named Francisco
Petrarch. The form remained largely unknown until it was
found and developed by writers such as Shakespeare.
Sonnets use iambic meter in each line and use line-
ending rhymes.

Example: In The Shadow Of Your Warm Love

English (Shakespearean) Sonnet

In The Shadow Of Your Warm Love
In the shadow of your warm love
I feel so safe and secure,
And your soft, caring hands
Urge me on to bravely endure.
Your smiles soothe and ease the pain
Of another dark and lonely day;
The rainbow appears amid the rain,
My sorrow as quickly melts away.
A reassuring glow within your eyes
Tells me that you understand
The complicated ways of my sighs
Born of thoughts truly grand.
I continue to look upon your face
And gain a calm heart, my sweet solace.

What Is a Haiku?

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry made of short,

unrhymed lines that evoke natural imagery. Haiku
can come in various formats of short verses,
though the most common is a three-line poem
with a five-seven-five syllable pattern.
What Are the 3 Rules of a Haiku Poem?

There is a typical structure that most English-

language haiku poems follow. It is the five-seven-five
structure, where:

1. The entire poem consists of just three lines, with

seventeen syllables in total.
2. The first line and third line are five syllables.
3. The second line is seven syllables.
Limerick
a five-line witty poem with a distinctive rhythm. The
first, second and fifth lines, the longer lines, rhyme. The
third and fourth shorter lines rhyme. (A-A-B-B-A).
• Line 1: 7-10 syllables A
• Line 2: 7-10 syllables A
• Line 3: 5-7 syllables B
• Line 4: 5-7 syllables B
• Line 5: 7-10 syllables A
Examples of Limericks:

A Wonderful Bird Is The Pelican

A wonderful bird is the pelican,

His bill will hold more than his belican,
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I'm damned if I see how the helican!
Free Verse
A Free Verse Poem does not follow any rules. Their creation is
completely in the hands of the author. Rhyming, syllable
count, punctuation, number of lines, number of stanzas, and
line formation can be done however the author wants in order
to convey the idea. There is no right or wrong way to create a
Free Verse poem.
Acrostic
Acrostic is a form of poetry where the first or last letters of each line create a name,
word, or phrase. You can find these words by looking vertically at the beginning or end
of the lines.

Examples of Acrostic poems:

A Family
F- fiercely loyal to those we love.
A- accepting each for who and what they are.
M- matchless in our hopes and dreams for one another.
I- instilling pride in our hard fought heritage.
L- learning about our past guides us in the future.
Y- you love and cherish the people of your heart.
