Question (1): [10 marks]
Steam at 320°C flows in a stainless-steel pipe (k = 15 W/m · °C) whose inner and outer diameters are 5 cm and 5.5
cm, respectively. The pipe is covered with 3-cm-thick glass wool insulation (k = 0.038 W/m · °C). Heat is lost to
the surroundings at 5°C by natural convection and radiation, with a combined natural convection and radiation heat
transfer coefficient of 15 W/m2 · °C. Taking the heat transfer coefficient inside the pipe to be 80 W/m2 · °C,
determine the rate of heat loss from the steam per unit length of the pipe. (5 Marks)
Also determine the temperature drops across the pipe shell and the insulation. (5 Marks)

Question (2): [15 marks]

a) Consider steady-state conduction through a plane wall separating fluids of different temperatures, T∞i and T∞o,
adjoining the inner and outer surfaces, respectively. If the convection coefficient at the outer surface is five times
larger than that at the inner surface, ho = 5 hi, what can you say about relative proximity of the corresponding
surface temperatures, Ts,o and Ts,i, to their adjoining fluid temperatures? (5 Marks)

b) Heat is transferred from hot water flowing through a tube to air flowing over the tube. To enhance the rate of
heat transfer, should fins be installed on the tube interior or exterior surface? (5 Marks)

c) A pipe is insulated such that the outer radius of the insulation is less than the critical radius. Now the insulation
is taken off. Will the rate of heat transfer from the pipe increase or decrease for the same pipe surface temperature?
(5 Marks)
Question (3): [12.5 marks]

A- A 4-m X 5-m X 7-m room is heated by the radiator of a

steam heating system. The steam radiator transfers heat at a
rate of 10,000 kJ/h and a 100 W fan is used to distribute the
warm air in the room. The heat losses from the room are
estimated to be at a rate of about 5000 kJ/h. The initial
temperature of the room air is 10°C. The gas constant and
specific heat at constant pressure for air are R = 0.287
kPa.m3/kg.K, and Cp = 1.007 kJ/kg·K.
i. Determine the mass of the air in the room in kg. (2.5 Marks)
ii. Determine the time it takes for the air temperature in the room to rise to 20°C in seconds. (2.5
Marks)

B- The maximum flow rate of standard shower heads is about 13.3 L/min
and can be reduced to 10.5 L/min by switching to low-flow shower
heads that are equipped with flow controllers. Consider a family of
four, with each person taking a 5-min shower every morning. Water at
15 °C (point 1) is heated to 55 °C (point 2) in an electric water heater
(not shown) and then tempered to 42 °C (point 3) by mixing with cold
water at the T- connection of the shower (shown in the figure) before
being routed to the shower heads. The density and specific heat of water at room temperature are  = 1
kg/L and c = 4.18 kJ/kg.°C.
i. Determine the ratio of the mass flow rates of the hot water to cold water. (2.5 Marks)
ii. If the low-flow heads were used, determine the amount of water saved per year. (2.5 Marks)
iii. If the low-flow heads were used, determine the energy saved per year. (2.5 Marks)

Question (2): [12.5 marks]

An air conditioner (refrigeration cycle) with Refrigerant-22 as
the working fluid is used to keep a room cool. The evaporator
of the refrigeration cycle is basically a heat exchanger in which
a refrigerant is evaporated by absorbing heat from a room air.
Refrigerant-22 enters an evaporator (point 1) at 200 kPa with a
quality x = 0.22 and a mass flow rate of 0.029 kg/s. Refrigerant-22 leaves the evaporator (point 2)
superheated by 5 °C at the same pressure. The refrigerant is evaporated by absorbing heat from air whose
flow rate is 0.75 kg/s. The specific heat at constant pressure for air is Cp = 1.007 kJ/kg·K.
i. Determine the specific volume at the evaporator inlet (point 1) in m3/kg. (2.5 Marks)
ii. Determine the enthalpy at the evaporator inlet (point 1) in kJ/kg. (2.5 Marks)
iii. Determine the enthalpy at the evaporator outlet (point 2) in kJ/kg. (2.5 Marks)
iv. Determine the rate of heat absorbed from the air in kW. (2.5 Marks)
v. Determine the temperature change of air (Tair = T4 –T3). (2.5 Marks)
