Answer the following questions about immigrants from the year 1820-2013:
1. Pause the video when it gets to any year 1870-1879. Look in the bottom left corner. What is
the total migration at this time? What three countries have the most immigrants coming to
America?

2. Pause the video when it gets to any year 1890-1899. Look in the bottom left corner. What is
the total migration at this time? What three countries have the most immigrants coming to
America?

3. Compare your answers from questions 1 and 2. What's different? Can you think of any
explanations for these changes over time?

4. Now, let the video play all the way to the end, focusing on the patterns and the waves over
time. Watch it multiple times if you need to. As the years get closer to the present day, what
patterns emerge?

a. What is one thing that you find surprising? Why do you think it is surprising?

b. What is one possible explanation for this surprising data?

8. Here are the largest immigration “waves” charted over time, showing the progression. Which
"wave" is the largest?

9. Here is the same chart, with the immigration shown as a percentage of the U.S. population.
Which wave was the largest percentage of US population? What kind of impact do you think this
wave of immigration had on American society (culture, workforce, politics, etc)?

10. Notice China on the chart in the years 1850-1890s. Why do you suppose its numbers are so
low? Do any other countries stand out in this way?
