III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. Introduction/Motivation
Good morning, ma’am
Good morning, class. Shall we pray first?
Yes, ma’am.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be
Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this
day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass
against us; and lead us not into temptation,
butdeliver us from evil. Amen
.
Good morning class!
Good morning

How are you today?

We’re good ma’am.
It’s good to hear that. By the way, are there
absentees?
None, ma’am.
Very good that you’re here to participate with
our new lesson. But before that, kindly give me
a recap of what we had discussed last
meeting.
We discussed WH-questions.
You formulated questions following the correct
pattern. Today class we’ll discuss graphic
organizer. Through this discussion class, you
will be able to achieve the following objectives.

You will be able to identify the different graphic

organizers.

Next, you will be able to organize information

about a chosen subject using a graphic
organizer.

Later after class, we’ll see if we were able to

achieve these objectives.

B. Presentation of the lesson

Now, let me ask you. What do you know about

graphic organizer?
Graphic organizers are guides.
Very good. Any other idea?
These are visual materials used in displaying
relationships between facts, terms, and ideas
within a learning task.
Precisely!
Graphic organizers are graphic displays that
depict relationships. Let’s have the definition of
graphic organizer.
Anybody read the definition?
Graphic organizers are sometimes referred to
as knowledge maps, concept maps, story
maps, or concept diagrams. They are used in
organizing a particular type of information.

Graphic organizers are visual displays or

illustrations that help you, as a student,
organize ideas, see relationships, and retain
information. Similar to the organization of our
apps in our phones, graphic organizers afford
students the opportunity to transform
information, ideas, and concepts in a visual
way.

Actually, we have different types of graphic

organizers. One of these is a Venn diagram.

Based from your prior knowledge, what is your

idea about this Venn diagram?
They are used in identifying similarities and
differences between things.
Very good!
Any other idea?
They are used to compare and contrast two
things.
Very well said. Venn diagram is used when
comparing and contrasting two or more things
or concepts.

I have here the definition of Venn diagram.

Anybody please read the definition.

Venn diagram or compare/contrast is used to
identify similarities and differences between
two or more concepts.
As what I’ve just said a while ago, this diagram
is used when you are asked to see
relationships between two things or ideas.
Take a look at this example.

Compare and contrast the women before and

nowadays. Women before are not allowed to
study. They can only do household chores.
Nowadays, they can go to school and work in
different companies.
Their similarity is that, women are always
considered the light of the house even years
had passed.

Is it clear? Yes, ma’am.

Later I’ll ask you to organize information using

these graphs.

But before that, let’s know more about them

first. Let’s have the second type of graphic
organizer – the KWL Chart.
Kindly read the definition.
KWL Chart is used to organize new
information that you learn as well as a key
aspect of the topic that you want to learn more
about.
To make it simple, it’s like what you Know,
what you Want to know and what you Leaned.
For example: Let say you were given a
paragraph that talks about friendship. Then,
you’re going to organize the information you
get using this chart.

What I Know What I Want What I

to know Learned
Friend is How to keep Friendship
someone a long- must be filled
who never lasting with honesty
gets tired of friendship. and love.
listening to
your dramas.

Any questions so far?

Now let’s have the third graphic organizer

which is the sequence chart or flow diagram.
Anybody please read the definition.

Sequence chart or flow diagram shows a

series of steps or events in order in which they
take place.
As what it says there, it is a step in a process.
If you can still recall, we already had it when I
ask you to write a recipe of something.

What recipe did we discuss?

A recipe for better living.
Very good! In that example, you were able to
see the steps on how to have a better living.

Did you understand?

Any questions?

Now, let’s have the last graphic organizer

which is the problem and solution map.
Kindly read the definition.
Problem and Solution Map is used when
information contains cause and effect
problems and solutions.
Based on that definition, what can you
understand about the problem and solution
map?
It shows solution to a particular problem.
Very good! Say for example failing grades.
What caused a failing grade? It can be
tardiness. And then what solution can be done
to treat the problem which is failing grade?
You can say, come to school early and
actively participate to the lesson.

Clear? Yes, ma’am.

Do you have any questions?

(Questions may be asked by the students.)

C. Application
Let’s try to organize information about the
differences between ocean and lake using an
appropriate graphic organizer.

What do you think is the appropriate graphic

organizer to use?
Compare/Contrast or Venn Diagram
Correct!
Since we are going to provide information
about the differences between ocean and lake,
it’s very appropriate to use this diagram.

Let’s use the short paragraph below as a

guide in organizing information:

Oceans and lakes have very much in

common, but they are also quite different. Both
are bodies of water, but oceans are very large
bodies of salt water, while lakes are very much
smaller bodies of fresh water. Lakes are
usually surrounded by land, while oceans are
what surround continents. Both have plants
and animals living in them. The ocean is home
to the largest animals on the planet, whereas
lakes support much smaller forms of life.
When it is time for a vacation, both will make a
great place to visit and enjoy.

(Present the graphic organizer.)

(Students will be working with the teacher and

organize information about the topic using
Venn diagram.)

(Process the presentation.)

D. Generalization
Why do we need to study graphic organizers?
Because they are used in organizing
information.

Very good point.

How about the others?
We need to study them because they can be
our guide in organizing information using
visual materials or illustrations that are very
simple.
Very well said.
Then what is the importance of these graphs?

It helps us to easily show information we get

out of a particular story, article, paragraph, etc.
Yes. Exactly!
Expressing ideas will be very easy.
Any other importance?
It allows us to examine relationships as well as
demonstrate our thinking process.
It encourages each student to brainstorm and
make it easy to classify ideas and
communicate.

These graphic organizers are so much useful

when trying to present information of a certain
topic in a very brief manner.

IV. EVALUATION

Organize the information given in the story, Footnote to Youth by Jose Garcia Villa,
using a graphic organizer.

Group 1 Sequence Chart or Flow Diagram

Group 2 Compare/Contrast or Venn diagram

Group 3 KWL Chart

Group 4 Problem and Solution Map

V. ASSIGNMENT

Look or search for a very short article/story/paragraph. Organize the information you get
from the chosen piece using an appropriate graphic organizer.
