Homework # 1 Due 9/13/2023

1. As a valve is opened, water flows through the diffuser shown in the figure below at an increasing flowrate
so that the velocity along the centerline is given by:
%
𝑽 = 𝑢$̂ = 𝑉! (1 − 𝑒 "#$ ) ,1 − & - $̂, where 𝑢! , 𝑐, and 𝑙 are constants. Determine the acceleration as a function
'$
of 𝑥 and 𝑡. If 𝑉! = 10 (
and 𝑙 = 5 𝑓𝑡, what value of 𝑐 (other than 𝑐 = 0) is needed to make the acceleration
zero for any 𝑥 at 𝑡 = 1 𝑠 ? Explain how the acceleration can be zero if the flowrate is increasing with time.

2. For the following flow field: u=yz+t ; v=xz-t ; w=xy (a) Is the flow incompressible? (b) Is the flow
irrotational? (c) Find the acceleration components of a fluid particle at (1,1,1) at t=1.

3. The transient temperature distribution in a fluid is given by T=(10x+5y)(1+t), where x and y are the
horizontal and vertical coordinates in meters, T in degrees centigrade and t is time in seconds. Determine
the time rate of change of temperature of a fluid particle located at (1,1) at t=1: (a) travelling horizontally
at 1m/s passing, (b) travelling vertically at 1m/s passing, (c) travelling diagonally (at 45degree) at 1m/s
passing, (d) stationary

4. Assume the temperature of the exhaust in an exhaust pipe can be approximated by 𝑇 =

𝑇! 81 + 𝑎𝑒 ")% ;[1 + 𝑐 cos(𝜔𝑡)], where 𝑇! = 100 ℃, 𝑎 = 3, 𝑏 = 0.03 𝑚"* , 𝑐 = 0.05, and 𝜔 = 100 𝑟𝑎𝑑/
𝑠. If the exhaust speed is a constant 3 𝑚/𝑠, determine the time rate of change of temperature of the fluid
particles at 𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = 4 𝑚 when 𝑡 = 0.
