The simple past tense is the past tense in English. This sentence is used to describe a time in the past.

The function of the simple past tense is to describe events or actions that have occurred or describe
events that have ended in the past.

There are two forms of the simple past tense formula, namely nominal and verbal:

Nominal

(+) S + was/were + non verb

(-) S + was/were + not + non verb

(?) Was/were + S + non verb

Ex:

(+) She was absent two days ago

(-) She wasn't absent two days ago

(?) Was she absent two days ago

Verbal

(+) S + V² + object

(-) S + did + not + V¹ + object

(?) Did + S + V¹ + object

Ex:

(+) He slept in the room yesterday

(-) He didn't sleep in the room yesterday

(?) Did he sleep in the room yesterday


Note:

1. I, She, He, It, name = was 4. Weren't = were not


2. You, We, They = Were 5. Didn't = did not
3. Wasn't = was not
