Last chapter for a Student-Teacher but a

new page for a future Licensed Educator

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

INTRODUCTION

The last chapter for a student-teacher, but a new page

for a future licensed educator. Ergo, the preparation for my
journey to become a licensed educator is almost complete.
There are still some factors that I need to improve. I need to
prepare and enhance my skills to become a much more
efficient teacher in this challenging world. There are still things
that have already changed and will continue to change, so I
must be flexible in adopting trends.
As the last part of my preparation for embarking on the
journey of becoming a future educator, I must become one of
them. I must become a student teacher who will teach, guide,
and facilitate the students. I'm blessed to be assigned to
Daraga National High School, which is my alma mater. I am
grateful to serve the school that nurtured me for almost six
years and built my foundation into who I am right now. I didn't
expect that the small learner who has had big dreams in the
past would be returning to the school where the dreams were
made. The person who was just dreaming of becoming the one
who taught and tutored others is close to achieving his dream.
This portfolio contains the experience, information, and
knowledge that I gained during my teaching internship. It was a
fun journey that faced some struggles, but I still overcame
them. The first day of introduction in class ends in such a short
period of time that I didn't know I had already spent three
months with them. The cooperation and participation of the
students and the guidance of my critic teacher and other
teachers in the faculty enhanced my skills and character,
preparing me for my next journey. This portfolio contains a
journey and appreciation for people who guide and support in
the last chapter for a student-teacher, but a new page for a
future licensed educator.

PROFFESIONAL READINGS
Failure does not reduce success it is a
stepping stone to further improve success. Using
different approaches in teaching is sometimes like
a gamble, it can be effective and sometimes not.
Some approaches are not applicable inside the
classroom which can inspire to create a more
effective and efficient one. The learner's diversity
plays a significant role in applying appropriate
strategies in teaching. Among the approaches to
teaching, constructivism is one of the most
effective strategies. Constructivism improves the
traditional learning process and culture in
teaching. The learners are given the freedom to
construct knowledge rather than pass the
information. The teacher will just serve guide and
facilitate them during the learning. The learners
can become more active and productive if they are
given a chance to speak and participate. I noticed
during my teaching internship that learners who
are allowed to work freely can create a productive
and effective output. They create things beyond
your expectations and improve the output you
have given them. They create a piece of art from
their innovative minds making their products attain
greater heights that you didn't expect them to
reach, but the most important part of their learning
process is that they are enjoying what they are
doing. They are having fun while doing the
activities given to them. Understanding the
diversity of learners is the key to using a suitable
approach to teaching. Using the fitting approach
can maximize the learning experience of the
learners.

PROFFESIONAL READINGS

Using a different approach to teaching brings

a more effective and efficient way of learning. I
noticed during my internship some of the students
have difficulty adopting the new modality. They
tend to not participate in the recitation and
cooperate in group discussions. The focus of
students on the lesson decreases they tend to talk
to their classmates more than listen during the
lesson. The use of a new approach to learning
utilizing games becomes more creative. The
participation of the students makes the classroom
more engaging and enjoyable. Using games
makes the lesson easy but informative, active, and
more inviting since they are more competitive
when it comes to peers vs peers. In my teaching
internship, I encountered this kind of scenario
where I needed to find solutions to the growing
problem of how I will help my students participate
in the lesson effectively. I use various strategies
and techniques but it is still not effective. Then I
remembered that teaching is not always about
discussion, sometimes we need to think outside
the box. Sometimes being creative in teaching
produce efficient learning. Being creative is a
strength of a teacher that can help students learn.
The more engagements happening in the
classroom the students can learn more.

WEEKLY JOURNAL
FEBRUARY 1-3, 2023
This is the start of a new page of my journey,
becoming a Teacher in the future. I feel blessed
because I know that I'm so close to reaching my
goal. I am happy yet I'm still afraid and worried
about what will happen on the first day of being a
Student Teacher. On my first day of teaching, I
came to school earlier than I expected. I am too
excited to see my students and to start my first
day. My cooperating teacher provided me with the
schedule of the two sections that I will handle.
The first is in the eighth-grade section and is
named Avocado and the second is also in eighth
grade and named SPA-Reyes. In both sections, I
introduced myself and ask my students to write
their expectations. They are cooperative and
active students when it comes to activities. The
first task I gave to them is checking their
periodical exam for the second grading period.
The time allotted for our subject is 45 minutes
which was enough to finish everything we need to
be done. After I did my discussion in both
sections, I recorded their scores. Every student
has their own skill sets, strengths, and weakness.
It's better to understand them early than be late.

FEBRUARY 6-10, 2023
In the second week of my teaching internship
at Daraga National High School, they didn't have
any classes because they have their semesterly
break. The teachers also needed to attend In-
service Education Training (INSET). That training
program would help them develop, improve, and
polish their skills as educators further. Every Master
Teacher would present strategies to improve the
teaching and learning process of Teachers who
were present in the program. We also participated
being the hosts and organizers that helped the
program flow go smoothly as possible. I was tasked
to help in organizing and being one of the technical
operators. Skills, that are already honed, can still be
improved and developed if you are open to
changes.

FEBRUARY 13-17, 2023
After a long weekend of the students, the
class resumed and I proceeded in teaching my
first lesson in eight-grade, Avocado. I have
prepared resource materials but I was still feeling
the pressure. I feel pressured in a way that what if
I make a mistake and my performance or
discussion is not effective? The lesson that I was
tasked to make is not fitted to the allotted time so
I needed two sessions for the topic. Every student
actively participated in the discussion. After the
class ended, my cooperating teacher gave me
comments, suggestions, and bits of advice on
how I would become a more effective teacher. I
also handled seventh grade. I needed a different
level of approach in teaching students in lower
grades because they are still fresh from an
elementary school character. Some of the
students build their character and adjusted in high
school but are still changing. All of the student
teachers in the AP department conducted a
meeting with the OIC Department Head to give us
advice and feedback on our first week of
teaching. Don't hesitate to do the first step in
doing activities. It's better to try than to not do
anything at all.

FEBRUARY 20-23, 2023
In the third week of my teaching internship, it
was the start of the school's Intramurals so normal
classes were canceled and students were advised
to watch and participate in the sports fest. During
this week, it was also the release of the student's
report cards for the second grading period. After my
class in the morning shift, I was tasked to help one
of our respected teachers in facilitating the morning
distribution in the seventh grade. I helped the
students clean the room and facilitate the
attendance of the parents and the distribution of
report cards. Also, in the afternoon I did the same
routine but with the tenth-grade students. Report
cards are a written product of a student's
performance but character is a great asset for
success.

February 27, March 1-3, 2023
In my fourth week of internship,
it was another week of refreshing
the mind of students about the
lesson due to long weekends. Some
of the students had difficulties
remembering the lessons, so I
reviewed them to help them better
understand them. I also tried
tandem demo teaching in one of the
sections in grade 8 with my co-
student teacher Ralph Laurence. I
notice that if there are two teacher
teaching in the classroom the
learning can process more effective
and efficient. The more people who
guide the learner in their learning
journey the more they appreciate
and applied they learned.

March 8-10, 2023
This is the fifth week of our internship program. Some students have difficulty managing their
time when it comes to preparing their activities and assignment. I noticed some of the students are
excellent in the class but some are still adjusting in the group. As a medication for this problem, I
conducted some group activities that will help them collaborate and develop their communication skills.
They just needed to be guided to improve. This week I also prepared the summative exam that will be
used at the end of the first module. It's exciting and slightly difficult at the same time. Some things
needed to consider, factors that need to address, and adjustment that needs to be fixed. Creating an
exam is a worth-it experience, you have the power to make it easy and at the same time difficult if you
see it fits but the most important reason why we create exams is to assess our learners what they learn
and improve them. It's quite a frustrating and sad week because of the events happening in the
country. This event leads to hindrance to learning on the side of students but it is also needed for the
future of others. The jeepney owners and drivers conducted a transport strike to fight for their rights
and freedom. The modernization of jeepneys can lead to poverty for our jeepney drivers. The amount
needed to purchase the jeepney is equal to the amount needed to build a new house. They can only
earn a minimal amount and only enough for their family, so purchasing that kind of jeep can affect their
life drastically. The transport strike affected the learning progress of the students it lessens the time
they can learn. Some students maximize the time given to them during the transport strike to review the
lesson. Time is essential in building ones learning, it's necessary to not waste time for we can never
return the used time.

March 13-17, 2023
It's my sixth week in the teaching
internship. This week I conducted a summative
exam for my students in eighth grades Avocado
and SPA-Reyes. They are given plenty of time to
prepare and review the lesson. It's very exciting to
see students who answer your exam happy and
prepared. Still, I noticed some of the students find
the exam difficult maybe because they didn't
prepare for the exam. During my observation, I
remembered myself before I became I student-
teacher I was one of the students who were
answering the summative exams student who was
prepared and sometimes not. I view the past as a
history that can reminisce and also thought
lessons that I need in the present. After I
conducted the exam I was proctored in the
examination in other sections with the help of my
morning shift co-student teacher. Being prepared
for the exam is also like being prepared for war.
The people who prepare for everything will be
granted more blessings.

March 20-24, 2023
It's the seventh week of my
journey as a teaching intern. I return
the papers to my students. Almost
all of the students past the exams
and got high scores but there were
a few who fortunately find the exam
difficult it seems. I review the parts
of the lesson they find difficult and
explain them in a way they can
understand the lesson more easily
and effectively. Review is an
essential practice to develop and
improve someone's skills and
knowledge.

March 27-31, 2023
It's the eighth week of my teaching
internship. I continued the lesson that was
introduced last week. I noticed that some of the
students have difficulty adjusting to the lesson.
Some of the students did not participate in the
discussion because they did not do an advanced
reading. I always remind them that always have
confidence in recitation because there is no wrong
answer if they see it fits the question. They must
have confidence in themselves. I also facilitated in
other sections in eight-grade because one of the
teachers handling them got sick. They are well-
behaved students, they only need a facilitator that
will facilitate them. In the afternoon we also had an
emergency meeting with our school coordinator
about the visit of the university representative. In the
morning before the visit, we prepared the room in
which the visitation will be held. Lessons can be
delivered in different ways but their effectiveness
doesn't reduce.

April 4-5, 2023

It's the ninth week of my

teaching internship. It's quite sad
because the long weekend and
holidays are approaching. I only
proceeded to the lesson and did not
give them additional activities for them
to enjoy the long weekend. I only
advised them to still review because
the third periodical exam is
approaching. There was also a meeting
conducted to prepare for the upcoming
event held in the school. Humans also
need to have some relaxation time to
prevent our body and brain to be
drained of pressure and stress.

April 11-14,, 2023

It's my tenth week in the teaching internship. In

the preparation and implementation of the events, we are
tasked to facilitate the classroom management of the
sections assigned to us. We are allowed to teach different
levels of students from grades seven to ten. The section
that I needed to facilitate was also an eighth-grade level. I
just followed the instructions given to me by the teacher
and also reviewed them in the upcoming exams. The
preparation for the periodical exam is tough because it
must be crafted with different levels of difficulty. It is the
exam that will summarize students' knowledge. I was
challenged in creating the exam because it needed to
pass the standards of our Master Teacher in the
department. The exam only took two revisions which
makes me happy. Every mistake, we can learn from it. In
every learning, we can develop ourselves to strive further.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

April 17-21, 2023
It's the eleventh week of my teaching
internship. It's the final exam of the students and I
know they are prepared and ready to take the
exam so I have confidence that they will pass the
exams. I did not have an advisory class that
needed to be proctored so I stayed in the office on
the first day of the exam week. On the second day,
I helped facilitate the tenth-grade exam, Diamond.
The students were very cooperative and eager to
pass the exam. After the exam, I also prepared
myself for the final demo that I and my co-student
teachers needed to pass. I read and revised my
lesson plan for it to fit in the time allotted per
student teacher. It underwent various revisions and
adjustments just so that it can be precise. It is
better to be prepared than to fail in the end.

April 24-28, 2023
It's the last week of my internship journey in
my Alma Mater school. On the first day of the
week, we checked the papers for exams in eight-
grade, Avocado. Almost all of them passed the
exam. I also gave rewards to the highest-scored
students. In the afternoon I also assisted my fellow
student teacher in their final demo. On the second
day of the week, we also check the exam papers of
my students in eighth- grade, SPA-Reyes. They
also passed the exams, no one was lower than the
passing score and we also conducted an item
analysis.
On the third day, it was the day that I will do
my final demonstration. The final demonstration
was where I showed my honed skills and the
products of my experience for the past 3 months of
being a student-teacher. I confidently proceeded
with the demonstration teaching and passed it with
flying colors. I'm so proud of myself because I
know that I did my best and I applied all the
teaching and learning that I acquired for the past
four years in college. This is the beginning of my
dream, there will be challenges that I will need to
overcome but it's part of my growth.

For the past three months, I noticed that most of

my skills and character are developed. The more I
engaged in teaching and preparing for the daily
activities for my students the more it helped me
deepen my understanding of what being a teacher
is. Being a teacher is not always writing on board,
checking test papers, and reading books, it is also
being their second parent and another supportive
guardian of the learner's growth as a student and
as a human being. As Brad Henry once said, an
American Governor who showed and made a lot of
contributions to the American Education Sector, "A
good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the
imagination, and instill a love of learning."

EXPERIENCES AND REFLECTIONS
ON EACH OF THE PPST DOMAINS
DOMAIN 1. CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND PEDAGOGY
In a constructive classroom setting, the
students are the one’s engaging in learning while
the teacher is the one who guides them. That
domain recognizes the importance of teachers’
mastery of content knowledge and its
interconnectedness within and across curriculum
areas, coupled with a sound and critical
understanding of the application of theories and
principles of teaching and learning. My
cooperating teacher always reminds me to
integrate other subjects during our first post-
conference after the demo teaching. It's one of the
lessons that I appreciate from my cooperating
teacher it's one of the pieces of advice that will
help me become a more effective teacher in the
future. In the following demo teaching, I always
integrate other subjects into the lesson to make it
more effective and productive. The use of modern
technology in teaching increases students’ interest
in the learners. The classroom participation
increased when the students found the lesson
more engaging. It’s better to understand what are
the appropriate strategies to be used in teaching.
In teaching strategies is It important to connect to
the students to deliver the lesson strategies more
effectively and efficiently. In my experience, a
great strategy in teaching is not worth it if there is
no communication built within the group. I always
connect with my students to apply the learning and
share the knowledge efficiently.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

DOMAIN 2. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

The learning environment affects students’ development. In my teaching internship, I

notice that the learner environment affects the student’s participation. In domain 2 it
highlights the role of teachers to provide learning environments that are safe, secure,
fair, and supportive to promote learner responsibility and achievement. If they feel
secure and accepted in the classroom they show participation and cooperation. If they
feel pressured and affected by other natural hindrance they are not focused. I always
promote a collaborative learning environment for my students for they to improve
socialization and cooperation. Creating a place where students feel secure and
comfortable is one of my goals in classroom management. The students can create
productive outcomes if they cooperate. Creating a welcoming environment decreases
the classroom's miscommunication and increases classroom engagement. A positive
learning environment can improve the student’s skills and character.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

DOMAIN 3. DIVERSITY OF LEARNERS

Everyone has unique skills and talents but

everyone has the same goal at the end of the day.
Domain 3 emphasizes the central role of teachers
in establishing learning environments that are
responsive to learner diversity. In my teaching
internship, I prioritize the sense of community
inside the classroom. If they feel secure inside the
classroom their confidence can manifest. They
have different degrees of understanding the lesson
but as a facilitator inside the classroom, it's my
task to increase their level to cope with the
learners who are continually advancing. I always
share my perspective in life that if they want
respect they must learn to respect themselves and
others if they want to be treated respectfully. I
didn't promote grooming and bullying indeed the
classroom because it will affect the growth and
character of the students. Prevention is better than
cure, so avoiding misconception and
miscommunication can prevent gaps inside the
institution.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

DOMAIN 4. CURRICULUM AND PLANNING

Lessons can provide data but lessons with plans can create information.
In this domain, it encompasses the ability to translate curriculum content into
learning activities that are relevant to learners and based on the principles of
effective teaching and learning. In my internship, I am tasked to create a lesson plan
as a guide in my demo teaching. I encountered different revisions that honed my
skills. My critical teacher always reminds me of the importance of every part of the
lesson plan. They play a significant role that supports each other parts. She always
reminds me to create activities aligned with the objectives. Objectives that are
attainable and flexible inside the classroom. Always align the goal towards
collaboration. Collaboration is essential in building students’ character and skills, so
it's necessary to create a lesson plan which can apply collaboration. The use of
technology is also a useful tool in promoting collaboration inside the classroom.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

DOMAIN 5. ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

Assessment is not always about tests and exams it's about the growth and
development of students.
In domain 5 it relates to processes associated with a variety of assessment
tools and strategies used by teachers in monitoring, evaluating, documenting, and
reporting learners’ needs, progress, and achievement.
In creating an assessment various factors need to be considered. Some steps
need to be followed and strategies need to be used. The assessment will become
the summary of the growth of the students. To create an effective assessment first,
we must consider these factors the lesson coverage, the difficulty of the questions,
and the time frame allotted. These factors will help me in crafting my assessment.
After creating an assessment, it will still undergo a revision from our respected
master teacher. They will give their comments and suggestions to better improve the
assessment. The results of the assessment will serve as written feedback on our
demo teaching. The assessment will provide information that will measure the
learning of the students. It will show whether they learned and have difficulty
learning the lesson. Assessment is the receipt of all the learners learned in the
lesson.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

DOMAIN 6. COMMUNITY LINKAGES AND PROFFESIONAL ENGAGEMENT

Teachers’ duty is not always inside the classroom they also participate in the
community.
In domain 6, it identifies and responds to opportunities that link teaching and
learning in the classroom to the experiences, interests, and aspirations of the wider
school community and other key stakeholders. It is necessary to create
communication and collaboration with the community to create an effective learning
environment. The community plays a significant role as a partner of teachers in
developing and guiding the students in their career path. It's necessary to conduct a
meeting with the parents to address concerns regarding the classroom environment
and student performance. The parents can suggest and cooperate with the teacher
on how to improve the classroom environment. Identify the student’s strengths and
weaknesses, to help them in creating a solution. Building a bond with parents can
help the students develop and improve. Communication between teachers and the
community is necessary for building a student’s foundation.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

DOMAIN 7. PERSONAL GROWTH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Lessons can be learned but development takes a step-by-step process. In my

teaching internship at Daraga National High School, I was excited and challenged It
was exciting because I will return to my al mater and provide service like it provides
me before. It is quite challenging because my skills and character will be developed
I am thankful to my critic teacher because she guides and supports me in my
teaching internship journey. She helps me in adjusting from student to becoming a
student teacher. She always gives me creative criticism on how to develop my
lesson plan and in demo teaching. The experiences I gained in my teaching
internship are valuable assets in the development and improvement of my
foundation to becoming a Teacher in the future.

JERIC L MIER PORTFOLIO

TEACHING CREDO

I believe that the individuality of teacher and learner is an asset in the teaching and learning
process. A learner learns from his or her teacher, and a teacher learns from his or her learner.

I believe that teachers must have emotional maturity, mental balance, and strong motivation. a
strong motivation to pursue teaching, not for salary, as an occupation that will benefit the country.

I believe that students should develop self-responsibility, concern for education, and self-
appreciation towards education as if it were their own treasure that is worth more than gold. I
believe that students should develop a sense of responsibility and diligence in prioritizing their
education, for no treasure can be taken away from an educated human being. I believe students
should not be deprived of freedom in terms of learning. They must be given the opportunity to
develop their individuality.

I believe that the act of learning is a total and unending process when a person reaches optimum
effectiveness, the whole of humanity benefits from the action or behavior being displayed. After all,
what one teaches is always part of what one does; what one applies is always part of what one
learns.

I believe that of all human functions, the teacher plays the most crucial role. He can make or break
a child. I believe that there is no greater profession than being a teacher. One can make an
engineer who will make better grounds for learning. an architect who is willing to redecorate and
check the interiors of the school. The doctor who will take charge of the medication of the patients
supervised by the nurses an artist who will be more than willing to use color in the lives of his
learners. a fireman who will stop bullying and a policeman to secure the safety of the learning
ground. And so many other noble professions that best suit a human individual. A teacher creates
a masterpiece more than a perfect artist could produce.

I believe that teaching is a lifetime challenge. It takes more than self-will and self-determination to
pursue teaching, but when achieved, there is no greater gift than seeing a learner understand
what is being taught and being able to apply it. I believe that if both the teacher and the student
meet halfway, then learning will be an easy process and it will transform all other individuals.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY AS A BEGINNING TEACHER

We are heirs to a rich philosophical heritage. Passed on to us are a number of philosophies of

various thinkers who lived before us. These thinkers reflected on life in this planet. They occupied
themselves searching for answers to questions come in different versions - “what is life?”, “why am
I here?”, or “what am I living for?”, what is reality?”, “is the universe real?”, “what is good to do?”,
“how should I live life meaningfully?”, and the like. In the school context, these existential
questions are “why do I teach?”, “what should I teach?”, “how should I teach?”, “what is the nature
of the learner?”, “how do we learn?” etc.
In teaching it needs passion and courage. I believe that a teacher must possess the sense of
commitment; it needs courage to take any necessary risks to achieve the excellence that is so
essential to the child’s learning.
Teaching is not just a profession. It is a vocation, a calling that is more than 24/7 service. It
is a covenant which needs will and determination. Teaching is not a job. It is more than that.
Teaching profession requires passion, where diversity and individual differences is taken into
consideration. It is not only the syllabus that matters but how the learners will put into action the
values learned from the different discipline.
As a teacher I must be flexible, patient, reflective and open to new ideas. I will be
thoughtful, enthusiastic, energetic, caring and supportive. Giving every learner an opportunity to
build their personality and develop their innate talent. I will show equal treatment to them and give
them what they deserve.
A teachers’ purpose is not to create learners in his or her image, but develop learners who
can create their own image.
