Philosophy

General

The project is located in North Acton, London and comprises a replacement façade
cladding system for an existing building.

The building comprises a series of adjoining multi-storey blocks up to seventeen storeys tall
above ground level. The proposed use of the building is primarily residential
accommodation with commercial retail at ground floor level.

The primary structure is assumed to be a reinforced concrete frame with an inner leaf
assumed to comprises an SFS-type lightweight cold-rolled steel frame, or similar.

Scope

PDC were instructed by our client, MK Façades Ltd, to carry out a wind loading assessment
for the building to enable structural design of replacement façade systems to be carried out.

The assessment and associated calculation document is intended to be used by PDC to

enable design of façade system components to be carried out on behalf of MK Façades
Ltd. The document is also suitable to be used by competent and qualified third parties for
the same purpose.

It is important to note that the wind loading assessment is only suitable for façade and
cladding systems only. Furthermore, the assessment does not include internal wind
pressure or suction coefficients and therefore is not suitable for design of window systems,
curtain-walling systems or inner leaf secondary steelwork etc.

The assessment is not intended to provide wind loading data for the complete façade of all
of the blocks. A detailed assessment is carried out for the principal blocks which should
provide adequate information to be able to design rational and economic façade systems
for the whole facade.

Reference Documentation

Documentation issued to PDC includes the following:

· Architect’s proposal and elevation drawings by Scott Brownrigg

· Original Architect’s plan drawings by Amos Architecture and Design
· Building survey plan and elevation drawings by Origin Surveys

Design

The wind load assessment carried out by PDC is in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4. The
assessment uses MasterSeries software to generate basic design loading and external
coefficients for façade design.

The building comprises a series of separate blocks which are of varying heights and
connected at different levels. The assessment combines the group of north-eastern blocks
into a single structure and also combines the group of south-western blocks into a separate
single structure.

An assessment of the effects of wind funnelling is carried out as a separate exercise to the
isolation case data provided. This applies to funnelling between blocks of the development
and also due to buildings located adjacent to the development. Where appropriate, this
should also be considered and applied to the design of façade systems.

Parameters for façade design:

Cs = 1.0
Cd = 1.0

Cpi = +/-0.0 (External coefficients only used)

Wind Funnelling

1) Consider funnelling between north-eastern block and south-western block:

This occurs in 2no. locations:

a) Between blocks on western elevation:

i) Lower Level

Width, b = 13.9, 28.8m

Height, h = 40.4, 21.9m

Therefore, e = 13.9m

Distance between block = 9.5m < e – therefore funnelling could occur

Use Cpe = -1.6 as worst case in Zone A

Wind Direction 1 governs

Therefore, maximum design suction load = -0.993 x 1.6 = -1.59kN/m2

Height, h = 40.4, 41.0m

b) Between blocks on southern elevation

Width, b = 29.8, 18.7m

Height, h = 47.7, 38.3m

Therefore, e = 18.7m

Distance between block = 10.0m < e – therefore funnelling could occur

Use Cpe = -1.6 as worst case in Zone A
