Selected Grade 10 Students in Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. Memorial
National High School

Abstract: This study makes an effort to comprehensively evaluate the

connection between online games and the education or learning of
students as the area of digital games continues to develop. Applying a
quantitative method, nine researchers work together to code and
synthesize the findings based on a number of variables. The primary goal
is to investigate how online games impact students in different ways.
Overall, the findings show that online games have a negative effect on
achieving educational goals. When games are incorporated into the
learning process, the researchers find that games affect the academic
performance of students with an average weighted mean of 2.53
(sometimes). For the benefit of teachers, parents, and students who are
interested in the negative effects of playing online games, the researchers
chose this topic. Such research as this also provides potential options and
pathways for future research.

II. METHODOLOGY

The study entitled The Impact of Online Games on the Academic Performance of Selected
Grade 10 Students at Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. Memorial National High School utilized the quantitative
method of research.

The quantitative method of research aims to find out how many people have a certain thought,
behavior, or emotion. The standard format in quantitative research design is for each respondent to
be asked the same questions, which ensures that the entire data sample can be analysed fairly. The
data is supplied in a numerical format, and can be analysed in a quantifiable way using statistical
methods. Data tells us how many, how much, or how frequently to make calculations

The study was conducted at Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. Memorial National High School during the
school year 2022-2023. CAYSMNHS is situated at the Rizal Provincial Lot Hilltop, Cabrera Road,
KayTikling, Brgy. Dolores, Taytay, Rizal. There are 19 sections, but the researchers chose only
Grade 10 students from five regular sections in Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. Memorial National High
School as the subject. We only included the regular section and didn't include the pilot section.

Table 1. Distribution of the Respondents

Respondents Frequency Percentage

Male 19 73%

Female 7 27%

Total 26 100%

The sample was made up of 26 students from five sections: 19 males with a percentage of
73% and 7 females with a percentage of 27%, for a total of 100%. We chose Grade 10 students
because, based on the recent 2023 Global Digital Report by Meltwater and We Are Social, 95.8% of
internet users in the Philippines between the ages of 16 and 64 are gamers.

We used the Google Form as a research instrument and not by giving papers personally
because we only had two days to go to school at that time because of the hot weather. We chatted
with our friends through Messenger in the 5 sections that we have chosen so they could send our
survey to their classmates who are really playing online games. For the analysis of the data,
statistical tools were used in the study, including weighted mean, scale, and verbal interpretation.

It can be observed in this table that playing online games really affects the academic performance of
students, with an average weighted mean of 2.53 (sometimes) and being verbally interpreted as true.
This table shows that in question #1, do you play online games? Has a weighted mean of 3.64 (often).
In question #2, is there a time that you get late to school because you stayed up at night playing
online games? Has a weighted mean of 2.04 (seldom) and is verbally interpreted as slightly true. In
question #3, does playing online games make you feel distressed which is why you cannot think
properly? Has a weighted mean of 2.38 (seldom) and is verbally interpreted as slightly true. In

question #4, does playing online games lead you to be absent? Has a weighted mean of 1.31 (never)
and is verbally interpreted as not true. In question #5, do online games influence or distract you from
doing homework and projects? Has a weighted mean of 2.5 (sometimes) and is verbally interpreted
as true. In question #6, is there a time when, while you are in the middle of the class, you are playing
online games? Has a weighted mean of 1.69 (seldom) and is verbally interpreted as slightly true. In
question #7, is there a time when, while you are in the middle of the class, your mind is thinking about
online games and that's why you didn't understand the lesson? Has a weighted mean of 2.04 (seldom)
and is verbally interpreted as slightly true. In question #8, is there a time when, instead of reviewing
for your upcoming quiz or exam you just play online games? Has a weighted mean of 3.5 (often) and
is verbally interpreted as highly true. In question #9, is there a time when your eyes became blurry
because you played online games for a long time and you could not read what the teacher was
presenting on the blackboard or TV, so you needed to go in front to see it? Has a weighted mean of
3.04 (sometimes) and is verbally interpreted as true. In question #10, do you feel unresponsive at
class because you stayed up late at night playing online games? Has a weighted mean of 3.15
(sometimes) and is verbally interpreted as true.

IV. CONCLUSIONS

Based on the results of the study, the researcher arrived at the following conclusions:

1.) The participant's academic performance and their engagement in online gaming are
significantly correlated.

2.) Students who spend too much time playing online games typically have impaired learning
abilities like problems with doing activities, participation, and time management, or, to combine it all,
poor academic performance. At the completion of this research, it was discovered that playing online
games had a negative effect on students' academic performance, with an average weighted mean of
2.53 (sometimes).

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The researcher acknowledged the support from Dr. Mary Jean Dela Peña, Dr. Rowena Mande,
Dr. Ernesto Concepcion, and Dr. Luna Madera of Marikina Polytechnic College for their invaluable
support in this study.
DEDICATION

We wholeheartedly dedicated this study, of course, first to ourselves, who, despite so much stress
that had come our way and other projects that we needed to do aside from research, still continued
and didn't give up, so the research will be completed.

To our teachers, especially our English teacher, Ma'am April Olleta, for guiding us throughout this
project.

To our family, who always cheer us on and supports us.

To our friends who helped and supported us.

And of course, lastly, to our god, whom we might not see, but we always felt his presence, and we
know that he always helps us even if we don’t know it.
