A Treatment for a Documentary

Weston Carnival

Prepared by Drew Taylor

TREATMENT

Logline

An exploration of Weston-Super-Mare’s annual carnival and the effects it has on the town’s
community.

1ST Act – Opening Scene

‘Weston Carnival’ will open with a montage of shots of Weston-Super-Mare (including some
of the carnival itself), as the Narrator speaks in voice-over. The Narrator will provide insight
into Weston-Super-Mare and introduce to the audience the themes of the documentary –
investigating the effects the annual carnival has on the town.

2nd Act – The Journey

The Narrator – backed by footage of Weston-Super-Mare, the day before the carnival – will
discuss the current state of the town as it prepares for the carnival. They will then introduce
our interviewees: local business owners discussing their experiences with Weston Carnival
and how – if at all – it affects their business. We will then cut to several vox-pops with the
general public. Once these have concluded, the Narrator will introduce more interviewees:
Gina Hele (regular carnival attendee) and Katie White (regular carnival performer).

The Narrator will then talk about the day of the carnival to accompany sped-up footage of
crowds filling the town. We will see more vox-pops with the general public (this will include
an interview with Cameron Snook (regular carnival attendee)). We will then show detailed
footage of the carnival floats driving past.

3rd Act – Resolution

The carnival footage will then fade to footage of Weston-Super-Mare, on the day after
Weston Carnival, as the Narrator discusses the differences in the town’s atmosphere across
the event.§
