ABSTRACT

In the oil and gas industry, drilling operations facing challenges regularly. This happened because each
well has a different and unique problem. Drilling operations in North Kalimantan also facing the same
issue. Because of that, it is important to have a strong knowledge of each problem to get the right
solution. Mud is one of the major components that could solve drilling problems and elevate the
productivity rate. That's why choosing the right mud with the right composition is very important. In this
case, we try to formulate the best drilling mud to solve and prevent all the issues that exist in every
section. Petroweek 3 Well in North Kalimantan is considered as shallow vertical well, but the drilling
process has the potential to face various problems considering the data collected from the offset
well. Issues that might happen in this well are hole cleaning and casing seat that occur due
to cuttings accumulation. Therefore, drilling mud should be designed with the right viscosity. Shallow
gas happened because of low viscosity and can be solved using 200 bbl of 200 ppg kill mud. Loss
circulation and partial loss are possible to occur if the hydrostatic pressure is much greater than
the formation pressure. This can be prevented using the correct mud weight and can be solved by
injecting LCM. Opposite form loss circulation, sloughing shale and kick appear when formation pressure
is greater than hydrostatic pressure. The suitable solution can be maintaining proper mud weight or
adding shale stabilizer. Shale stabilizer also can be used to prevent formation damage and hole
instability. In order to increase drilling effectivity and to prevent drilling issues, water-based mud can be
utilized for overall drilling process by considering the well temperature, cost, and
logistic efficiency. Hence, spud mud will be used for 26” and 17” hole, whereas High Performance Water
Based Mud for 12 ¼" and 8½" hole.

In current climate drilling right now where the drilling industry is looking for cost efficiency, optimization
and achieve some saving in drilling days that lead to reduce overall of drilling operation are primary
objective besides complete the project with zero incident and accident to people, environment and
equipment.
We as Eco Soil Team as drilling fluids contractor understand the challenges from company to achieve the
target.
Through offset well data we understand what the challenges and thus here is our analysis and
recommendation
Our Mud system is designed with water based mud. The primary concept that we believe Water Based
Mud can deliver / provide sufficient inhibition and can adapt well to the formation temperature and well
trajectory (vertical type well). Our mud system will also perform effective contribution to wellbore
stability and rate of penetration. Additional due to remote location and only single well to be drill, using
water based mud will assist as well for product movement (logistic handling).

problem such ;

formation from near wellbore damage by using solid free Reservoir drilling fluids.
