Determination of Sodium Hypochlorite

Levels in Bleach

1.Define the terms below:

Titration: is a technique where solution of known concentration is used
to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. Often, an
indicator is used to usually signal the end of the reaction.
Titrant: is a solution of known concentration that is added to another
solution to determine the unknown concentration.
End-point: The point at which the indicator changes color is called
the end point.

2.In order to determine the sodium hypochlorite levels in bleach, what type
of titration is performed? Briefly explain it.

In order to determine the amount of bleach in each bottle a redox

titration will be performed. This redox titration is similar to an
acid-base titration a reagent of known concentration is added to the
unknown until a color change occurs.

3.a) Write the reaction between iodine and hypochlorite ion (OCl-) from
household bleach.

𝑂𝐶𝑙 − + 2𝐼 −  𝐼2 +𝐶𝑙 −

b) Write the titration reaction

.𝐼2 +2𝑆2 𝑂3−2  𝑆4 𝑂6−2 +2I

c)Write the reaction between hypochlorite ion (OCl-) from household
bleach and thiosulfate ion (S2O3)2

.𝑂𝐶𝑙 − +2𝑆2 𝑂3−2  𝐶𝑙 − +𝑆4 𝑂6−2

4. Why did you observe a color change at the end of the titration?

When the 2𝑆2 𝑂3−2 ion reacts with the 𝐼2 that is brown in the flask, I
that is colorless is formed when all of the 𝐼2 reacts, the solution
becomes clear. That is, iodine is reduced and sulfur oxidized. This
electron change causes color change.

5. a) Note the initial volume as 0.0 mL. The volume of the buret at the
endpoint is 8.5 mL. Determine the volume of Na2S2O3 used.

The volume of 𝑁𝑎2 𝑆2 𝑂3  8,5-0.0 = 8.5 mL

b) If the concentration of the Na2S2O3 is 0.100 M, determine the number

of moles of S2O3 2- used.

The number of moles of 𝑆2 𝑂3−2 n=MxV

N=0.100x8.5x10−3 = 0.00085 mol

c)Determine the number of moles of NaOCl that were in the flask.

The number of moles of NaOCl  2 x nNaOCl=n x 𝑁𝑎2 𝑆2 𝑂3

0,00085 = 0,00425 mol

d) 1 mL NaOCl solution was initially added to the flask from the bleach
bottle. Using this volume, determine the concentration of the OCl - in the
bleach as molarity.

The concentration of the 𝑂𝐶𝑙 − in the bleach as molarity  M=n/v

M=0,000425/1x10−3 = 0,425 mol/L
