Experiment # 4 Lab Report # 4
TITLE:
Solution Casting of Starch/PVA Blend
Biodegradable Film in Laboratory

INTRODUCTION:
In this 4th lab of polymer synthesis we make the Starch/PVA film by solution casting method in which
PVA and Glycrine we added as a additive to give the specific properties to film like flexible and make
easily film. The film formed is biodegradable due to PVA and Glycrine we added which contains
enzymes and breake the bonds with the passage of time. The normally lifespan of this film is 2 to 3
months. We take 75ml of water hot it 2-3 minutes and then added 3g of starch and 3g of PVA in water
and stirrer it for 30 minutes and keep temperature 70- 80C. The solution become viscous and thich then
we add Glycrine and again stirrer for 5 minutes then we take this solution and apply on thin Film
Applicator and after 1 day the solvent is evaporate and thin film is formed. We can control the thickness
of thin film applicator and we use 500 micro metre in this experiment. The PVA/Starch film is mainly
used in food packaging industry to store food.
CHEMICALS USED:
o Starch
o Poly Vinyl Alchol (PVA)
o Distilled Water
o Glycrine
APPRATUS REQUIRED:
 Beaker
 Hot Plate Magnetic Stirrer
