D. TEACHER’S SELF-REFLECTION OF THE SESSION

Learning by doing!

Trainees were able to demonstrate the tasks required of this particular competency using the Demonstration Method
and direct observation from advanced trainees coupled with questioning. Reading the modules alone was not enough for
students to be able to perform the tasks. Some trainees could not internalize and apply into practice what they have
read. Availability of tools/equipment and facilities helped much for them to successfully take the Assessment.

Information Sheet 4.4-1

DIFFERENT KINDS OF PACKAGING MATERIALS

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Identify the different kinds of packaging materials

"PACKAGING"

Packaging is the technology of

enclosing or protecting products for
distribution, storage, sale, and use.
Packaging also refers to the process
of design, evaluation, and
production of packages. Packaging
can be described as a coordinated
system of preparing goods for
transport, warehousing, logistics,
sale, and end use. Packaging
contains, protects, preserves,
transports, informs, and sells. In
many countries it is fully integrated
into government, business,
institutional, industrial, and
personal use.

 Packaging is very essential to every and to any type of industry.

Whether you’re in the food business, clothes manufacturing or you’re
in the technology industry, packaging is crucial. It protects the
product from any potential damage that will deem the product
useless. Thus a good packaging system is a must.

Different Kinds of Packaging Materials

Packaging calls for environmental responsibility. When choosing packaging

materials, consider the “three R’s”-reduce, reuse and recycle. Reusable packaging
adds a distinctive appearance and value to your product.

Listed below are different kinds of packaging materials:

1. Plastic/Polyethylene bags (Polybag)
- Most widely used packaging material. One
of the most common packaging materials
used for food products. Resin is most
common to plastic packaging as it can be
made flexible or rigid depending on the
need of packaging. This is commonly
used for sodas, milk carton and egg
trays. Rigid plastics are usually used for
manufacturing food cartons (for to go)
and other plastic trays.

2. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) box

- A synthetic thermoplastic material for
attractive packaging.

3. Tapes
- It is an adhesive tape that will stick with
application pressure, without the need for
a solvent (such as water) or heat for
activation. It can be used in the home,
office, industry, and institutions for a
wide variety of purposes.

4. Metal or Aluminum
– This type of packaging is normally
used for canned goods, sodas and
alcoholic drinks like beer. Although
aluminum is good for packaging,
challenge is it is quite expensive to
make one that is why you would hear
people trying to get all the used cans
that they can find so that they can have
it for recycling.

5. Cardboard/Paper box
– This is used when the product is
already wrapped in something that is
already well protected and secured.
This material is also highly
recyclable. This material is also used
in manufacturing corrugated boxes.
Some products use bubble wrap for
protective purposes before putting it
in a well-sealed box. Taping
machines are commonly used for
sealing these corrugated boxes just to
make sure that product is delivered
intact.

6. Glass
–It is frequently used for preserved
foods such as jams and honey. This
type of packaging is easy to use and
can be recycled over and over again.
Glass is also used for consumable
goods such as sodas, beer and wine.
Although this packaging is fragile, it
is still widely used across almost all
industries.

7. Wooden boxes and crates

- These are used in care of
bulky exports or rugged
shipment in case of handling
abuse. The woods used
mainly are sheets of ply wood
or tongue or grooved board.
Soft woods are basically used
because of low cost and have
sufficient strength.

INFORMATION SHEET 4.4-2

PROCEDURES IN LABELING AND PACKAGING FINISHED GARMENTS

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Identify the Procedures in labeling and packaging finished garments

Introduction

A label is a piece of paper, polymer, cloth, metal, or other material affixed to

a container or article, on which is printed a legend, information concerning
the product, addresses, etc. A label may also be printed directly on the
container or article.

Procedures in Labeling & Packaging Finished Garments

1. Making and Attaching Clothing Label

Another finishing touch to your completed garments is the label or tag.

Large garment manufacturers use custom fabric labels and clothing tags
usually attached on the back neckline. There are also embroidered, self-
adhesive, iron-on and sew on patches and hang tags. The following are
the information found on a garment label.

 Brand and trademark

 Name of the manufacturer
 Amount and fiber content - Ex. 90% cotton, 10% polyester
 Country of origin – e.g. Made in the Philippines
 Care instruction
 do not bleach
 warm iron
 dry cleanable
 machine wash warm
