Topic 11 Types of Sailing - Mercator Sailing using table - Using Meridional Parts

Mercator Sailing Problem

M/V White Harmony sailed from Lat1 32֯ – 30’N Long1 142֯ – 20’E to Lat2 49֯ – 40’N Long2 176֯ – 40’E.
Determine the course and distance by Mercator sailing.

Solution 1: Solve first Dlat, DMP and Dlo.

Lat1 32֯ – 30’N MP1 2051.3 (From table 5) Long1 142֯ – 20’E
Lat2 49֯ – 40’N MP2 3425.7 (useful tables) Long2 176֯ – 40’E
Dlat = 17֯ – 10’ N DMP 1374.4 Dlo = 034֯ – 20’E
x 60 x 60
= 1020 = 2040
+ 10 + 20
Dlat = 1030’ Dlo = 2060’

Note: Dlat and Dlo must be converted to miles before solving the True Course and Distance.

2) Find the True Course

Tan Co. Angle = Dlo
DMP
= 2060
1374.4
= 1.498835856
(shift Tan) =
Co. angle = N 56.3֯ E (Named N-E accdg. to Dlat = Dlo)
T/Course = 056.3֯

3) Find the distance

Dist = Dlat
Cos Co. Angle
= 1030
Cos 56.3֯
Dist = 1856.4 miles
