Topic 9 Types of Sailing - Sailing Problems for traverse and middle latitude with the use of

Traverse Table or Calculators

Middle Latitude Sailing Problem

1.M/T Gulf Challenger sailed from Lat1 32° - 48’S Long1 176° - 00’E to Lat2 32° - 00’s Long2 179° -
30’W. Find the true course and distance.

Solution:

a) Solve DLat:
Lat1 32° - 48’ S
Lat2 32° - 00’ S
Dlat 00° - 48’ N

b) Solve for Dlo:

Long1 176° - 00’ E +
Long 2 179° - 30’ W
Dlo 355° - 30’ W

360° - 00’
355° - 30’
Dlo = 004 30 E

c) Solve for Mlat:

Lat1 32° - 48’ S
Lat2 32° - 00’ S
Sum = 64° 48 ÷ 2
Mlat = 32° 24’

d) Solve for True Course:

Tan Co. Angle = Cos Mlat x Dlo
DLat
= Cos 32° - 24’ x 270’ (270 comes from 4 x 60 = 240 + 30 = 270)
48
Cos Angle = 4.74934458
Shift Tan = N 78.1 E (N-E sign from Dlat & Dlo and since N 78.1 E is in first quadrant
therefore T/C = Co Angle/T/C = 78.1’)
T/Co = 078.1 (T)
e) Solve for Dist:
Dist = Dlat
Cos Co.
= 48
Cos 78.1°
Dist = 232.7 miles
