I. Objective (s)
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
 To know what is perennialism.

 The focus of perennialism will be defined by students.

 The students will be able to define the main pedagogical goals of education in
perennialism.

II. Introduction
Perennialism in education is the idea that school curricular should focus on what is
everlasting. You can remember the word “perennialism” by remembering that perennial
means lasting for many years. Thus, perennialism is focused on things that have lasted for
many years

III. Body

What is Perennialism?
Derived from the word perennial, which means to endure the test of time, perennialism
in education means to teach what is everlasting. Just as perennialism plants last for years, a
perennial curriculum focuses on principles that have been constant throughout human
history. Unlike education that promotes current practice and job skills, for perennialists,
education should focus on literary classics, on theory, and the development of mind.

What are the characteristics of perennialism?

Perennialism in education includes the teaching of evergreen ideas, or principles that have
remained constant throughout the history. Perennialist teachers support students to
participate in the Great Conversation, which is a dialogue that takes place within classical
works that transcends time. For example, Shakespeare’s Macbeth teaches us about the
dangers of ambition and corruption in the government.

What is the role of the teacher in perennialism?

In perennialism, the teacher uses a subject and instruction-based format in which all
students are treated the same, and in which the content is the focus. Perennialist teachers
are not worried about differentiation or individualism, rather they are focused on the
teaching of universal truths to support intellect above all else.
What does perennialism mean in education?
In education, perennialism is the teaching of everlasting, or evergreen ideas. Perennialism,
as a teacher-centered and subject-based approach, is the opposite of progressivism, which
focuses on student’s needs and experiences in current times. Rather, perennialism is
focused on the development of the mind through theory and timeless principles that teach
what it means to be human

IV. Classroom Setting Application

Perennialism in the Classroom
The principles of perennialism shape a distinctive environment in the classroom.

Here’s a look at what a perennialist classroom might entail:

1. Teacher-Led Discussion: A perennialist classroom often centers around teacher-led
discussions.
2. Critical Analysis of Texts:
3. Emphasis on Intellectual Development:
4. Role of the Teacher and Students:

V. Summary

Perennialism is an educational philosophy that supports the teaching of universal truths, or

principles that stand the test of time. Perennialism plants endure time as they last for years,
and accordingly, the evergreen ideas of perennial education are those that have remained
constant throughout human history. For example, humans can always benefit from the
themes of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which reveal what will happen when society is ruled by
ambition and corruption.
