TANZANIA
Tanzania is Africa’s visual masterpiece. It is a country of natural
splendour, astounding wildlife, seductive beaches, charming ancient
towns, archaeological sites and geological wonders.

IT ALL STARTS WITH

HABARI

Tanzania is a beautiful, untamed country of

diverse landscapes ranging from majestic
mountain peaks to white sand beaches and
endless stretches of open plains, famously
inhabited by large herds of wildlife. In
particular, the Great Migration is a sight
that draws safari enthusiasts year after
year for its affirmation of life and
timelessness.

While climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and

embarking on a safari across the northern
circuit are the most well known adventures,
there are certainly more remote safari
circuits that are equally as majestic.

A safari to Tanzania requires careful

planning in terms of timing, weather and
locations, especially with regards to animal
movements. We will be able to guide you to
the best areas so that all of your own
unique interests can be included in your
Tanzania safari.

2
&BEYOND MNEMBA ISLAND
If you have ever harbored the secret wish of
finding yourself the sole inhabitant of a beautiful
tropical island, but without the effort of having to
lift a finger to fend for yourself, &Beyond Mnemba
Island is just the place for you.

This romantic, private hideaway is an award-

winning barefoot beach paradise just off the
northeast coast of Zanzibar, that accommodates
a maximum of 20 guests at a time.

SINGITA FARU FARU LODGE

northern Tanzania, which is part of the Serengeti
Mara ecosystem. Built on a gently sloping hill,
this riverine lodge, positioned on the renowned
migratory route traversed annually by more than
2 million wildebeests, is a place where you can
quite literally expect the unexpected.

With such close proximity to the river and plains,

guests have the unique opportunity to experience
a very close connection with the wilderness.

&BEYOND NGORONGORO CRATER

With ever-changing views as mists swirl and
clouds scurry over the huge wildlife cauldron
below, the location of &Beyond Ngorongoro
Crater Lodge is truly breathtaking. Divided into
three camps, 30 stilted suites with banana leaf
ceilings and grass roofs provide an intimate and
exclusive safari experience.

Each camp has its own sitting and dining areas,

with private butlers who provide warm, personal
service.

THE RETREAT SELOUS

The Retreat Selous is a unique all-suite tented
lodge, found in the remote far north of the
UNESCO protected Selous Game Reserve on

The spaciously set tented suites have been

constructed to correspond with the surrounding
habitat, whilst guaranteeing privacy & romance.
Bespoke furnishings, African antiques, natural
materials, and precious stones are carefully
blended to create a unique sense of comfort and
natural luxury.

3
SINGITA SABORA TENTED CAMP
Singita Sabora Tented Camp is situated in an
untouched wilderness area of Grumeti Reserves,
spanning over 350,000 acres in northern
Tanzania.

The intimate 1920s-style explorer’s camp is

permeated by a sense of nostalgic adventure.
Steeped in character, Singita Sabora Tented
Camp surprises guests with an opulence that is
delightfully out-of-place with the rugged terrain of
the surrounding savannah plains.

AZURA SELOUS
The Selous is Africa’s oldest and biggest game
reserve, and one of its last great wilderness
areas.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has long been

renowned for having more wild dog, elephant,
lion, hippo and buffalo than any other game
reserve in the World. Azura Selous has a pristine
location on the banks of the Great Ruaha river,
ensuring game viewing from your bed, deck, and
even your outdoor shower.

&BEYOND LAKE MANYARA TREE LODGE

Most people think that the famous tree-climbing
lions at Lake Manyara have developed their
climbing habit to get away from annoying insects.
However, they might just be jealous of the
magnificent treehouse suites at &Beyond Lake
Manyara Tree Lodge.

Cradled in the boughs of an ancient mahogany

forest, the lodge blends into the natural beauty of
its breathtaking surroundings.

FOUR SEASONS SAFARI SERENGETI

Set within Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park,
Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is the
perfect escape for those looking for a truly
magical experience and to get up close and
intimate with nature. The design of the property
reflects both contemporary African architectural
style and its surrounding landscape, with the
centerpiece of the lodge being a two-story great
house that includes a choice of both indoor and
outdoor dining options.

4
PARK HYATT ZANZIBAR
Park Hyatt Zanzibar is the quintessential
destination from which to experience the rich
culture, heritage and historical significance of
Zanzibar’s main city, Stone Town, a designated
UNESCO heritage site. Sitting majestically on the
beachfront in the heart of Stone Town, the hotel
provides the ultimate haven amongst the city’s
labyrinth of winding alleys, bustling markets,
mosques and famed Zanzibari doors, featuring
magnificent ornate wooden carvings.

&BEYOND KLEIN’S CAMP

Situated on the only concession that borders on
both Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenia’s Masai
Mara National Parks, &Beyond Klein’s Camp
offers some of the best panoramic views of these
two iconic destinations, which also play host to
one of the greatest wildlife migrations on earth. In
this untamed and rugged landscape, you can
enjoy exceptional game viewing, thrilling night
game drives, Maasai culture and old-fashioned
safari luxury.

ELEWANA ARUSHA COFFEE LODGE

Situated amongst one of Tanzania's largest
coffee estates, the Arusha Coffee Lodge sets
within the rolling foothills of Mount Meru. Located
on the western edge of Arusha, the aroma of
coffee permeates throughout the property.

restaurants serving farm-to-table cuisine, along
with three bars.

5
KIRAWIRA LUXURY TENTED CAMP
The most exclusive of the Serena Group's many
safari venues, and a member of the Small Luxury
Hotels of the World group, Kirawira Tented Camp
offers the epitome of classic ‘Out of Africa' safari
camp luxury. Styled to replicate the elegant
hunting camps of such legendary ‘white hunters'
as Denys Finch Hatton and Baron Bror Blixen, it
is located adjacent to the famous western
corridor of the Serengeti National Park - arena of
the ‘Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth', the annual
migration of over one million wildebeest.

SERENGETI SERENA SAFARI LODGE

Set high on the saddle of a tree-clad ridge,
commanding panoramic views across the
Serengeti, this lodge is the ultimate fusion of
traditional African architecture and world-class
style. Winner of numerous awards from the world
travel press, it is perhaps the finest venue the
Serengeti has to offer.

Centrally located adjacent to the famous Western

Corridor and Grumeti River, the lodge has been
designed to blend completely into the living
landscape.

NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI LODGE

Regularly voted one of the best hotels in the
world, this unique lodge clings to the rim of the
magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, the largest and
most perfect volcanic crater on Earth.

Long and low, the lodge is built from local river

stone and camouflaged with indigenous vines.
Designed to blend completely into the landscape,
it is entirely invisible from the floor of the Crater
600 metres below.

ZANZIBAR SERENA INN

Idyllically situated on the sea front of ancient
Stone Town, washed by the aquamarine waters
of the Zanzibar channel, redolent of the scent of
cloves and flanked by an exotic melange of
sultan's palaces, Portuguese forts, ancient dhow
harbours, dark slave markets, and bright
bazaars, the Zanzibar Serena Inn is a haven of
tranquillity and opulence amongst the bustle of
Zanzibar.

6
SINGITA SASAKWA LODGE
Singita Sasakwa Lodge is one of three Singita
lodges in this enormous private concession (350
000 acres), which means that you’ll have this wild
stretch of Africa all to yourself. Sasakwa Lodge is
built in the style of an Edwardian manor house.

Stone walls, deep verandas, high ceilings, stately

furniture, silverware and ornamental pieces
complete the picture. Each cottage has a private
infinity-edge pool overlooking where the land
stretches to forever.

HYATT REGENCY DAR ES SALAAM

A stay at Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, The
Kilimanjaro offers a variety of possibilities to keep
you entertained. Unwind with a soothing
massage or body treatment at the Anantara Spa,
or enjoy sunbathing on the infinity pool deck and
enjoy superb views overlooking Dar es Salaam
harbour. Discover Tanzanian treasures in the
ground floor shopping arcade or try your luck at
the Kilimanjaro Casino, where games such as
blackjack and roulette await.

ZURI ZANZIBAR HOTEL

Set right on the edge of one of the best beaches
in Tanzania, Zuri is a high-end eco-resort that is
the perfect place for sun loving guests to use as
a base. Guests can follow the pretty lantern-lit
jungle paths that lead the way to a collection of
55 thatched-roof villas that have been carefully
designed to reflect the style of a traditional
African village. Guests who want to be able to
enjoy plenty of privacy while also having easy
access to the beach are sure to love staying at
Zuri.

JABALI RIDGE
This beautiful and sophisticated lodge has been
built on the side of a hill and provides guests with
stunning views all the way across the expansive
wilderness of Ruaha National Park. The lodge
has been designed so that it blends seamlessly
with its pristine natural surroundings and is a very
special place to stay while spending time in this
part of the world. While each room is extremely
elegant and natural, people who want the chance
to soak up stunning sunrise views should make
sure that they secure room one.

7
DIAMONDS STAR OF THE EAST
Guests who book one of the eleven spacious
villas at the Diamonds Star of the East will be
treated to a private and exclusive sanctuary as
well as a whole host of luxurious amenities such
as a private plunge pool and a very tastefully
furnished terrace, the establishment can be found
just five minutes from the famous Nungwi
beaches and guests will be able to take in the
majesty of the famous Zanzibar sunset from their
covered Makuti patio.

MELIÁ SERENGETI LODGE

Meliá Serengeti Lodge lies just shy of an hour’s
drive from the sparse Seronera Airstrip, in the
heart of the Serengeti National Park. The lone
property for miles and clinging to the crest of a
hill, guests are treated to unrivalled views across
the park’s immense plains and the Mbalageti
River Valley. Herds of elephants can often be
seen traipsing the grasslands below while, in the
evenings, lions and other big cats are known to
saunter the hotel’s grounds or take a dip in the
pool.

THE RESIDENCE ZANZIBAR

The one hour and 20-minute drive from Zanzibar
Kisauni airport means you are completely away
from the hustle and bustle of the outside world,
but also reliant on a car to get anywhere.

That said, the hotel is so beautiful, you may not

even want to leave anyway. Security in and out of
the resort is tight and the hotel will gladly arrange
a taxi if wishing to venture out.

THE OYSTER BAY

Oyster Bay is also the name of the surrounding
affluent neighbourhood, an Indian Ocean-facing
enclave of embassies, palm trees and private
residences. It’s not central, but then most guests
don’t aim to explore the city – they’re here for a
night before, during or after a safari.

The airport is 30-90 minutes away depending on

the whims of Dar’s legendary traffic – lightest on
Sundays, worst during weekday rush-hours.

8
XANADU VILLAS & RETREAT
Zanzibar was previously a Sultanate of Oman,
and the striking dome-shape roofs and large
circular rooms reference the Arab history and
influence on this spice island. Alongside ornate
copper camps and trays, there are African
artworks, including black and white watercolours.

Villas are set around a makuti-thatched central

pool and bar/restaurant area. Vervet monkeys
occasionally work their way through the grounds
– even they seem pretty chilled out.

ROHO YA SELOUS
Roho lies on a promontory of Lake Nzerakera in
Selous’ best wildlife area. The flight to Siwondu
from Dar es Salaam takes 35 minutes, then you’ll
embark on a game drive to camp lasting a couple
of hours depending on what’s around. Located
within Tanzania’s 'Southern Circuit', Selous has
lush landscapes and special residents including
rare wild dogs, yet far fewer visitors than the
northern parks of Serengeti and Ngorongoro
Crater. Therein lies its charm.

MWIBA LODGE
Set in a private 51,000-acre wildlife reserve in the
south-west of the Serengeti, this exclusive lodge,
with its thick and scrubby vegetation, is a far cry
from the savannah landscape typical of the
central Serengeti region. While the wildlife in the
area might be a bit skittish at times, the quality of
its safari tours is excellent, focusing as much on
the fascinating smaller species as the bigger
ones. Between January and March, guests can
visit the migration herds around Ndutu as a day
trip.

MELIÁ ZANZIBAR
The resort hugs the northeast coastline of the
island, roughly 45 minutes drive from Zanzibar’s
international airport and capital city, Stone Town.

Set back from the main coastal road, there’s a

feeling of isolated calmness, although most of the
island’s popular tourist spots, such as its famed
spice plantations, are easily accessible by car in
under an hour.

9
LITTLE CHEM CHEM
Adjoining unfenced Tarangire – a beautiful park,
with baobabs in wide open grass plains giving
way to lush green swamps, and densely
populated with wildlife – and Lake Manyara, often
pink tinged with flamingoes, Little Chem Chem is
ideally positioned to explore two of Tanzania’s
iconic national parks.

Stylish, hands-on owners Fabia Bausch and

Nicolas Negre bring a European glamour to the
traditional Out of Africa-style safari camp.

MATEMWE LODGE
The lodge is situated beside an 11 mile-long
beach (17 km) near the village of Matemwe in the
northeast of the island. Opposite the lodge is the
diving haven of Mnemba Island.

As with the whole east coast, the sea here is tidal

receding up to a kilometre at low-tide. The beach
can also be affected by seaweed between
September and November.

NAMIRI PLAINS
Surrounded by an ocean of grass, Namiri is
where you fully comprehend why the Masaai
called this region Serengeti, ‘endless plains’. It’s
at least an hour’s drive to any other camp, so big
cat encounters are unlikely to be spoilt by the
arrival of another vehicle – a true luxury for safari
aficionados. What you won’t see in this
environment are large mammals requiring trees,
such as giraffe and elephant, but the rolling green
parklands that typify more popular central
Seronera are one to two hour's drive away.

FUNDU LAGOON
Pemba, the ‘Green Island’, takes around an hour
by plane from Dar Es Salaam, usually flying via
Zanzibar. Fundu Lagoon is reached via a 45-
minute drive from Pemba ‘s Chake Chake airport
and a 15-minute speedboat ride from Nkoani
port. It’s right on the beach, with 15 of the 17
rooms and suites looking right out onto sand and
ocean.

The Pemba Marine Reserve across from Fundu

has pristine corals and masses of fish, offering
top diving without the crowds.

10
EMERSON SPICE
The hotel sits on a tiny square overlooking Tharia
Street in the centre of Stone Town, a five-minute
walk to Forodhani Gardens, the Old Fort and the
city's other main sights.

There's no direct vehicle access, so ask your taxi

driver to call the hotel once nearby; staff will
happily come to guide you along the narrow,
winding streets. Street noise carries through the
wooden shutters, and the night is pierced by the
first call to prayer from the mosque across the
road.

BLUEBAY BEACH RESORT & SPA

Perched on the sparsely populated northern
coast, Bluebay’s remoteness is part of its appeal.
It’s a one-hour drive (29 miles) from the airport,
and from the shops, sights and restaurants of
Stone Town. Going outside the resort requires a
lengthy car ride, but the upside is a peaceful
palm tree-lined white sand beach.

Indian and African styles mesh here, although the

vibe is more beach resort-y than exotic.

MKOMBE'S HOUSE, LAMAI

Set unobtrusively on Kogakuria Kopje above a
classic Serengeti view. Mkombe’s House is an
ideal base to witness the river crossings that take
place between July and October, when the
wildebeest plunge into the fast-flowing waters of
the Mara River, many of them straight into the
waiting jaws of crocodiles. That said, the
proximity of permanent water means that resident
game is plentiful year-round, so worth booking
here even after the wildebeest have headed
south, trailing tourists in their wake.

HOTEL SLIPWAY
Slipway lies on the seafront of the Msasani
Peninsula, an hour or more from the airport in
heavy traffic but just 20 minutes away in the early
hours when many international flights depart. It’s
one of Dar’s more popular venues for killing time
in the city, complete with boutiques, eateries, a
bank, salon and spa.

Located in one of Dar’s smarter areas, its relaxed

vibe attracts well-heeled locals and expats as
well as tourists.

11
UNGUJA LODGE
Situated near the village of Kizimkazi Mkunguni
at the southern tip of Zanzibar overlooking the
Menai Bay, this is a quiet part of the island with
few hotels and idyllic beaches.

The lodge is set amidst an indigenous forest built

on a coral ridge above a brilliant white sand
beach that disappears at high tide.

Owners Ralph and Elies, and manager Martien,

infuse the place with their unique brand of warm
hospitality.

POLE POLE
Unpretentious barefoot luxury (Pole Pole means
‘slowly, slowly’ in Swahili). Dreamt up by the late
Massimo Lancellotti, the collection of low-impact
timber-and-thatch buildings opened in 1998 and
the overall atmosphere is beautifully tranquil.

Wandering along the sandy paths, glimpsing

paradise flycatchers or watching a whole
squadron of flying foxes soaring overhead at
dusk, is absolutely magical.

KWIHALA CAMPS, RUAHA NP

Game-rich and ecologically varied Ruaha
National Park is the size of Wales and home to
10 per cent of the world’s lion population. Kwihala
is located in the north, near the palm-lined
Mwagusi sand river, and within easy striking
distance of the baobab-studded plains and rocky
koppies favoured by leopards. This unique
landscape, wild and undiscovered, changing
chameleon-like from green to ‘gold’ in the dry
season, is one of the reasons Ruaha attracts so
many repeat visitors.

ZANZIBAR WHITE SANDS VILLAS

Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is a
luxury boutique hotel located on the pristine
sands of Paje beach, on the East coast of
Zanzibar. Our spacious luxury villas (from 500
m2), with their pool and recreational area offer
the utmost privacy in a natural setting, while the
amenities deliver the highest standard of service:
spa treatments and facilities, two restaurants, a
rooftop champagne bar, a beach bar and a
lounge, as well as a high-end kitesurfing and
watersports center.

northern safari circuit all stop in the ‘Geneva of
Africa’ to prepare for their journeys into the
African bush.

of Mt. Meru, the Momela Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater,
and the lush highland forests that blanket its
lower slopes.

thought to be the deepest inland body of water in
Africa. This lake is fed by underground springs
from Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The lake has a great diversity of life. From lush

lake shore forest to stunning volcanic savannah;

ancient rock, to thick bush or open ‘mbuga’.

that will put you back in touch with nature.

LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

Located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara
Escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Lake
Manyara National Park offers varied ecosystems,
incredible bird life, and breathtaking views.

Located on the way to Ngorongoro Crater and

the Serengeti, Lake Manyara National Park is
worth a stop in its own right. Its ground water
forests, bush plains, baobab strewn cliffs, and
algae-streaked hot springs offer incredible
ecological variety in a small area, rich in wildlife
and incredible numbers of birds.

14
LAKE NATRON
A soda lake at the base of the active Ol Donyo
Lengai volcano, the area around Lake Natron is
often described as having a desolate and almost
lunar beauty. Lake Natron is found in the northern
part of Tanzania. Nearest towns to Lake Natron
are Arusha in Tanzania and Magadi in Kenya. It is
the most important breeding site for Lesser
Flamingos in the world. East Africa has 1.5-2.5
million Lesser Flamingos, representing three-
quarters of the world population and most of
them are hatched at Lake Natron.

MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK

Set below the verdant slopes of the spectacular
Usambara and Pare Eastern Arc Mountain
Ranges and overseen by iconic snow – capped
peak of Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi is a virgin
breathtaking beauty exhibiting unique natural
treasures and immense sense of space – which
adds to the fulfillment of high visitor’s enjoyment
expectations – a much needed bridge between
northern circuit and coastal attractions. Every
day, thousands of people pass within a few
kilometers of Mkomazi on one of Tanzania’s
busiest highways.

MT. KILIMANJARO NP
At 5896m Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest
mountain and one of the continent's magnificent
sights, It has three main volcanic peaks, Kibo,
Mawenzi & Shira. The name itself "Kilimanjaro" is
a mystery wreathed in clouds. It might mean
Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness or
Mountain of Caravans. Above the gently rolling
hills and plateaux of northern Tanzania rises the
snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, it’s slopes and
glaciers shimmering above the rising clouds.

MOUNT MERU
With its 4566m, Mount Meru is the fifth highest
mountain on the African continent and the second
highest in Tanzania. About 250,000 years ago, a
massive volcanic explosion wiped out the entire
eastern flank of the mountain and left it with the
quaint and distinctive look it has today. Last
eruption: 1910. As the flora changes, the fauna
does the same: during the ascent, you will meet
large mammals such as elephants and buffaloes,
but you may also encounter leopards.

15
MOUNT OL DOINYO LENGAI
"Oldoinyo Lengai" means “The Mountain of God”
in the Maasai language.

The summit of this strato-volcano is 2962 metres

above sea level, and affords direct views into the
caldera of Tanzania’s only officially-certified
active volcano, and the world’s only carbonatite
volcano; records of eruptions have been
maintained since 1883, the largest of which
deposited ash 100 kilometres away in Loliondo
on the Kenyan border to the north west.

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION
The jewel in Ngorongoro's crown is a deep,
volcanic crater, the largest un flooded and
unbroken caldera in the world. About 20kms
across, 600 meters deep and 300 sq kms in area,
the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural
wonder. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s
most famous sites and is said to have the highest
density of wildlife in Africa. Sometimes described
as an ‘eighth wonder of the world’, the Crater has
achieved world renown, attracting an ever-
increasing number of visitors each year.

OLDUVAI GORGE & LAETOLI

Over the last thirty years or so, it has become
increasingly apparent that Africa is probably the
"Cradle of Mankind". From Africa they spread out
to populate the rest of Earth. Remains of the
earliest humans were found in Oldupai Gorge.
Olduvai Gorge is a site in Tanzania that holds the
earliest evidence of the existence of human
ancestors. Paleoanthropologists have found
hundreds of fossilized bones and stone tools in
the area dating back millions of years, leading
them to conclude that humans evolved in Africa.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the best-
known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled
for its natural beauty and scientific value, it has
the greatest concentration of plains game in
Africa. The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania
was established in 1952. It is home to the
greatest wildlife spectacle on earth - the great
migration of wildebeest and zebra. The resident
population of lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, and
birds is also impressive.

become a hotspot for tourism in Tanzania.

Lumango range, Mikumi is the fourth largest

ACTIVITIES

29
BALLOON SAFARIS
Balloon safaris in Tanzania are a romantic and
evocative way of experiencing the wilderness of
East Africa, as you gracefully and silently fly over
the plains teeming with herds of wild life in the
early morning.

Typically, a ballon safari begins between 6 am

and lasts for around 1-2 hours, during which you
will likely see the magnificent wildlife below over
several square kilometres of the game park.
Ballon safaris are held regularly only in the
Serengeti and take off from designated sites (in
the Seronera area) where the disturbance to
animals is kept to a minimum.

BEACH HOLIDAYS
The coast of Tanzania is perhaps most famous
for the Zanzibar Archipelago, a cluster of islands
that saw the growth and survival of Swahili
civilisation and trade until the mid-twentieth
century.

Zanzibar enchants and beguiles with its oriental

mystique and forgotten exoticism — the very
name evokes the Spice Islands and the dhow
trade, sultans and palaces built of limestone and
corals against the palm trees and the crashing
surf.

But there’s more to the islands of Tanzania than

just Zanzibar.

BIRDING SAFARIS
The wild expanses of East and Southern Africa
are paradise for birders. While there is plenty to
occupy the keen or amateur birdwatching fanatic
from the moment you touch down, there are also
plenty of opportunities to spend time with some
seriously impressive guides.

Some guides have developed bird knowledge as

a special interest, some have become so familiar
with the common bird guide books that they
literally name the page with each bird sighting…
It certainly saves time leafing through indexes! It
is wonderful and worthwhile to have someone to
share your enthusiasm with.

30
BOATING & CANOEING
Boating and canoeing through the rivers, ocean
bays and waterways of Tanzania can be an
exhilarating experience. River boating can take
you past sleeping crocodiles and hippos sunning
themselves with their mouths wide open,
gathered in half-submerged herds. Taking to the
water is also a welcome break from the all-day
enclosure of a traditional vehicle safari, allowing
visitors to experience the sights and sounds of
Africa’s waterways up-close and unhindered. On
Tanzania’s large freshwater lakes, boats are a
popular means of transport and offer visitors the
chance to see life in and around the waters —
the fishermen bringing in their catch, the bustling
colours of the lake shore towns and the sharp
movements of small fish in shallow waters.

CONFERENCE TOURISM
Meetings, incentives, conferences & exhibitions,
or Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and
Events (MICE) is a type of tourism in which large
groups, usually planned well in advance, are
brought together for a particular purpose.

Conference Centers.

with visitors. It is a rewarding experience to leave
your 4X4 vehicle behind and walk through scenic
local resident villages with greatest Cultural
landscapes in Africa.

tourists get unforgettable and unique experience
while the local people generate income that
improves their standard of living.”

this tour offers the opportunity to see the Big
Five, Mt Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro crater, The

stunning beaches of Zanzibar.

slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro to the Rift Valley. This
trip offers biking as it should be - off the beaten
path and great fun!

DIVING & SNORKELING

Tanzania offers divers world-class reefs and
plentiful schools of tropical fish just offshore of
the popular beaches and secluded locations.

Dive courses are offered at many of the hotels

and lodges on the mainland coast as well as
Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia islands, and it is a
rewarding skill to learn while on holiday, but the
surface swimmer need not to despair since most
of the reefs are accessible to snorkellers and
equipment are easily rented from dive shops and
lodges.

Diving can be done all year-round, however

during the rains visibility can be limited.

FISHING
There are various options for enjoying good
fishing in Tanzania, mostly sea fishing along the
incredibly rich East African Coast.

Deep Sea Fishing

The deep waters of the Indian Ocean along
Tanzania’s coast are rich in big-game fish, from
marlin and tuna to swordfish and biting
barracudas.

All the same, the waters of Tanzania are only just

beginning to gain the world-wide fame of the
Kenyan coast, so the waters are less populated
and fishing is at its most pristine.

32

Rock Paintings of Kondoa Irangi Tanzania.

HORSE & CAMEL RIDING

Horse and Camel rides safaris are a specialized
product aimed at experienced riders, with the
average safari being at least a week in duration.

If you are a competent rider, there are few better

ways to experience Africa's beauty and
wilderness than getting on a horse and heading
out into the wilderness.

If you are a rider going on safari in Africa, among

a few better ways to experience Africa’s bush and
scenic places is on a galloping horse out into the
wilderness or through the lush vegetation of
Africa.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
Tanzania’s numerous parks and reserves offer
many climbing options for the avid explorer. The
most frequent expeditions are obviously to Mt.
Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, but there are also
other destinations such as the Crater Highlands.

Trekking companies will happily put together an

itinerary that suits your preferences and our
”things to bring” section will help to make sure
that you are adequately prepared. It is advisable,
especially when climbing at higher altitudes, to
take things slowly and allow your body to
acclimatize. Mountaineering is sport, hobby or
profession of walking, hiking, backpacking and
climbing mountains.

33
MUSEUM & MONUMENTS
The National Museum of Tanzania is a
consortium of five Tanzanian museums whose
purpose is to preserve and show exhibits about
the history and natural environment of Tanzania.

The consortium developed from the National

Museum of Dar es Salaam, established in 1934
by Tanganyika governor Harold MacMichael.
Four more museums later joined the consortium,
namely the Village Museum in Dar es Salaam,
the National History Museum and the Arusha
Declaration Museum in Arusha, and the Mwalimu
Julius K. Nyerere Memorial Museum in Butiama.

Dar es Salaam National Museum, Village

Museum, National History Museum, Arusha
Declaration Museum, Nyerere Museum.

PARAGLIDING
There are some fabulous areas to paraglide. Very
few people paraglide in Tanzania, therefore it is a
novelty.

Always seek permission from the local village,

explain what you are doing and where you think
you will land (it is illegal to fly over national
parks).

Just some of the areas to fly are the Usambaras,

the Rift Valley and numerous hills around Mt
Meru.

SHOPPING & NIGHTLIFE

Pick up African crafts and curios at the most
popular tourist centres. Dar es Salaam, Arusha
and Stone Town on Zanzibar are dotted with curio
shops, markets and bazaars, as well as main
roads near parks and reserves, and the coast
roads behind beach resorts, all have plenty of
roadside stalls.

Items to buy include African drums, batiks,

basket-ware, soapstone knick-knacks, handmade
chess sets, paintings of Maasai tribes and
Serengeti landscapes in the popular Tingatinga
style, and large wooden carvings of animals or
salad bowls fashioned from a single piece of
teak, mninga or ebony.

34
TINGA TINGA
From the most humble of beginnings, Edward
Saidi Tingatinga, the founder of the famous Tinga
Tinga Art, born in 1932 in a tiny village called
Namochelia in Mindu area, near the village of
Nakapanya in the South of Tanzania slowly and
subtlety began a movement in Tanzania that
would subsequently revolutionize the way art in
Tanzania would be made.

Tinga Tinga Art began as a simple idea: Use

recycled, low-cost materials, like masonite
squares, ceramic fragments, and bicycle paint.

His style was naïve, bordering on surrealistic and

humorous; most of his subjects were
stereotypical African icons, such as wildlife or
savannah landscapes.

WALKING SAFARIS
To walk through the African bush is to experience
Africa close-up. Smells are suddenly subtle and
varied and every sound has significance. Birds
and butterflies are individuals, noticed and
studied, not simply rushed past in the race for the
bigger game.

And when the larger animals appear, they are

met at eye level, standing on the same earth.
Safety is not an issue - armed, experienced
guides and game rangers accompany all walks.
Your camp is packed up and transported to the
next location by different methods: pick-up truck,
porters or donkeys. The camping style tends to
be lightweight and extremely mobile.

WILDLIFE SAFARIS
Discover the real wild side of Africa on an
adventure safari, choose an exciting tour that will
ensure you have the holiday of a lifetime.

When choosing a safari operator, be sure to

specify what kind of safari you want. Trips can be
tailor made according to your travel preferences,
the time of year, and what you want to see, so
don’t hesitate to let your operator know exactly
what you want.

Safaris in Tanzania have something to offer to

everyone. Experience the adventure of budget
camping or the opulence of luxury camping
safaris. Enjoy a truly memorable lodge safari, or
take it one step further and go fly camping.
Hunting safaris are also possible.

superb, secure, new and more convenient venue
in a natural setting with ideally designed layout
and new exhibition tents.

Every May, travel agents and tour operators

converge below Mount Kilimanjaro and the crater
of Mt. Meru for the East African travel event of
the year. Originally it started to showcase East
African tour operators and destinations, the
Karibu Travel and Trade Fair has been so
successful that its reputation has spread to the
travel industry overseas, and each year
attendance by exhibitors and visitors far exceeds
the former.

The Karibu Travel and Trade Fair takes place in

May, and is held in the town of Arusha, just hours
away from main safari destinations in Tanzania.

During the fair, overseas agents and delegates

meet with exclusive tour operators, lodge
managers, safari guides, and the people who add
that special touch to a Tanzanian safari that
makes it such a memorable experience.

NIGHT GAME DRIVES

The bush is a completely different world at night
which is what makes night drives so special.

Manyara National Park is currently the only

national park that allows this activity, an exciting
once in a lifetime experience. At night animals.

LUXURY TRAVEL
“If one were limited to a single word when
defining ‘luxury’ travel, that word would be
accommodation.

Where will you put your head to pillow after a

day’s touring adventure. Be it on safari, by rail or
by private vehicle, there simply are magnificent
choices in all regards. Thereafter, one should
decide upon joining a group with very limited
membership or choose customized travel, with a
private driver and guide.

The luxury of a custom tour allows one to choose

to spend more or less time at a particular site and
to end the day when they so please. Add to that
the undivided attention of ones private guide.

“People’s travel aspirations are changing, and

this is true throughout the market. The new
definition of luxury is no longer a 6-star hotel with
flunkeys and banquets and ever more exquisite
spas, but is an experience created for your own
personal preferences that combines enrichment,
enjoyment and education, with the time to
appreciate your surroundings at a price that
represents value for money.

WEDDING SAFARIS
Wedding safaris Begin your big day with a game
drive or walking safari, arrive at the altar on
horseback and get married with Mt Kilimanjaro in
the background and local Maasai as witnesses.

The choices are endless and there are many

companies who are happy to work through the
plentiful African red tape to ensure you have an
unforgettable wedding day - and legally binding
marriage.

ZANZIBAR
Known as the Spice Island, the beautiful island of Zanzibar on Africa’s east
coast is bursting with culture and history, seemingly at odds with its idyllic
geography of white-sand beaches with palms swaying lazily in the sea
breeze. Together this makes Zanzibar a fabulous place to explore as well
as a dream to relax and unwind.

45
Zanzibar is the semi-autonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar
Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and
consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to
informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja.
Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site.

Portuguese invasion and control of the Swahili Coast in the late 16th century ended the golden
age of the archipelago, although the Omani Arabs returned to power less than a century later.
Today, many of the winding streets and high townhouses of old Stone Town remain
unchanged and visitors can walk between the sultan’s palace, the House of Wonders, the
Portuguese fort and gardens, the merchants’ houses, and the Turkish baths of the old city. Day-
long spice tours to working plantations offer visitors the chance to observe the cultivation of
cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices that have made the island famous.

Zanzibar’s coastline offers some of the best beaches in

the world, but sand and surf vary depending on what
side of the island you’re on. On the east coast, waves
break over coral reefs and sand bars offshore, and low
tide reveals small pools of starfish, small minnows, and
anemones. Up north, ocean swimming is much less
susceptible to the tides, and smooth beaches and white
sand make for dazzling days in the sun.

The port city of Stone Town dominates the west coast,

and although the beaches of Mangapwani, where slave
caves are visible at low tide and nearby Bububu are less
than half an hour’s drive away, a night or two spent on
the east or north cost is well worth the extra hour it
takes to drive there. That said, the Chole Island Marine
Park just off Stone Town – and nearby Prison, Grave, and
Snake Islands – make a refreshing day-trip and a good
break from exploring the winding passageways of the
old city.

46
CULTURE & LIFE

47
STONE TOWN
Stone Town is Zanzibar’s historic heart, a
bewildering maze of streets and alleyways that
form the westernmost tip of Zanzibar Town.

These days the island’s bustling capital is home

to some quarter of a million people, but lost in the
tangle of Stone Town’s narrow streets it’s easy to
imagine yourself floating back in time.

Twisting passages unfurl beneath delicate

balconies as you dodge clattering coffee carts
and slip by past ornately carved doors. At three
and four stories the buildings tower overhead,
leaving just a ribbon of sky between billowing
laundry and shutters flung wide.

MUSEUMS
Zanzibar refers to the Islands by this name
located off the Tanzania coast but forms part of
the Tanzania nation, or the United Republic of the
Tanzania.

The Zanzibar Museum service is under the

Ministry of Education, Culture and sports that
operates within semi-autonomous government of
Zanzibar, and not under the wider network of
museums in the country called National
Museums of Tanzania. The two museum
administrations cooperate. The Zanzibar museum
service maintains membership in regional and
international bodies.

MONUMENTS
A large number of Zanzibar's most familiar
landmarks and monuments can be found within a
short distance from Stone Town. Many of these
are natural sights, such as Coral Cave and the
caverns found at Kiwengwa.

Sightseers based in Stone Town may also like to

pay a visit to Prison Island, which was used as a
prison for slaves who were awaiting transfer to
the Middle East and Europe. Kelele Square, the
historic Ngome Kongwe fortifications and the
ruins of Mtoni Palace will also vie for your
attention, so be sure to allocate plenty of time to
tour the principal sights around the capital.

NGEZI FOREST
Ngezi Forest Reserve covers an area of 14.4
square kilometers (5.6 sq mi) and is in the north-
western tip of Pemba Island one hour tarmac
drive from Pemba Karume Airport. It was
declared a reserve in 1950 after most of the area
had been denuded for cultivation of cloves. Ngezi
Forest Reserve comprises a unique combination
of vegetation types in Eastern Africa.

The forest consist of coral bushes and thickets,

thick grasses and bushes in the sandy-loam soils
and Mtifutifu soils; dominant plant species are:
Odyendea zimmermanni (Mjoho), riverine forest
of Barringtonia racemosa (Mtomondo), Milicia

Erythropholem spp (Mwavi), Antiarus spp
(Mgulele), Chrisalidocarpus pembanus. Visiting
Ngezi is a must for any nature tourist and the
cool, pristine beach at Vumawimbi on the north-
eastern part of the forest is very tempting and
rewarding.

The forest line containing closed vegetation

continues up to the beach at Vumawimbi giving
visitors to the new tourist resorts a wonderful
tropical experience.

RED COLOBUS
MONKEY
Jozani forest lies about 35 km south-east of
Zanzibar town. It contains about 100 tree species
from a total of 43 families. One of the most
famous and endearing residents of the Jozani
National Park is the Zanzibar Red Colobus
monkey.

Found only on the main island of Zanzibar, the

Zanzibar Red Colobus is recognised as a
separate species and is said to be endemic to
Zanzibar.

A visit to Zanzibar is not compete without seeing

one of the rarest monkeys in Africa, with less
than 2000 remaining in the world. Colobus

arboreal primates, is reduced to a mere stump in
the Colobus family (hence the name Colobus-
from the Latin for “deformed”).

PEMBA FLYING BOX
The Pemba flying fox has a charismatic fox or
dog-like face which is covered with a coat of
bright auburn fur.

These bats represent the largest fruit bats in the

world. Although they weigh just about 400 –
650g, their wings can span over 5.5 feet across.

They live in large social colonies of up to 850

individuals. Their diet consists mainly of fruit such
as figs, breadfruit, and mangos, as well as nectar,
pollen, flowers, and leaves.

They are an important species for seed dispersal

because they carry fruit and plant seeds in their
digestive system to other parts of the island.

The conservation of this bat instills a sense of

pride and progress in the local people who
actively participate to preserve their local
environment.

The economic returns garnered through this

small community tourism project have already
proven to be a great help in strengthening their
community.

BUTTERFLY
The Zanzibar Butterfly Centre is the largest
butterfly enclosure in East Africa.

The tour can take 30 – 40 minutes where you can

inspect the tiny butterfly eggs, touch and hold the
hungry caterpillars and watch them nibble away
at the leaves. Admire the beauty of the butterfly
pupae before witnessing the butterflies hatching
and opening out to become a butterfly.

The visitor can roam around the magical garden,

taking pictures of the butterflies and enjoying
nature's treasures. During the tour visitors will be
able to see many of Zanzibar's exotic butterfly
species and witness, close up, every stage of
their amazing life-cycle. Zanzibar Butterfly Centre
is a popular Zanzibar tourist attraction, especially
for school age children and their families.

It is among the community based tourism

attraction whereby revenue generated by visitors
provides funds for local projects in the form of
alternative livelihoods (Butterfly farmers were
previously engaged in deforestation activities),
conservation and poverty alleviation.
