VOCABULARY

.Perhaps you are noticing that your child


is not using as many words as other
children. This could mean that your child
is having difficulty learning new words, or
hearing the words, understanding the
words or remembering them. This may be
a sign of a speech and language delay.

LANGUAGE

You may be noticing that there are


difficulties when words are being said
and this may mean your child is having
difficulty making the sounds. This could
be a sign of a speech delay.

LANGUAGE

Perhaps your child is having trouble


putting words together in phrases and
sentences. If there is a difficulty putting
words together it may be a language
delay issue that affects sentence
structure.

FIGURING OUT THE MESSAGES

Your child may be more comfortable


communicating without using words.
This could mean that your child prefers
non-verbal ways to communicate, show
his message, because they find it hard
to talk. It could mean a lot of different
things, a speech problem, a language
problem or a social communication
problem.

REPEATS

Are you noticing your child often repeats


the same sounds or words over and over?
Are they echoing what has been said by
someone else. This could even be
delayed since the phrase was first heard.
This may mean difficulty with
communicating even though the child is
talking.

LISTENING

Have you been listening and tuning in


to your child’s pitch, volume, tone or
rhythm of communicating?

INTERACTING

Does your child become very frustrated


at times? If your child has trouble talking
to you they may be trying to act their
feelings out and are showing you how
frustrated they are. Making and
understanding how to communicate
together is vital for both of you.

INVOLVEMENT

Are you noticing your child tend to


avoid social interactions? This may
mean your child is having trouble
following conversations or taking part
in conversations. Are they sometimes
‘shy’ or hold back in some way? This
may mean a social anxiety.

EVALUATING

Are you noticing a slow response from your


child to any instructions or spoken
language? This could mean your child is
having trouble understanding spoken
language which is known as receptive
language understanding and it is important
to know what level of understanding they
are at. This is easy to work out.

OBSERVATIONS

Are you seeing that your child often


points or makes hand gestures or gets
you instead of talking? This could be a
sign that your child is finding it easier to
show more and talk less. It could be an
expressive language or talking problem
and is easy to find out if they are not
where they should be for their age.
