Chapter 1 Lesson 2: CROP FARMING: CARING AND MAINTENANCE

I-Objectives
In this lesson, the learner will be able to:
1. Explain the factors that affect crop production.
2. Determine the importance of pruning and growth enhancers.

E. Relevance: Fertilizers are additional substances supplied to the crops to increase their
productivity. These are used by the farmers daily to increase the crop yield. These fertilizers
contain essential nutrients required by the plants, including nitrogen, potassium, and
phosphorus. In this lesson students know the soil fertility will be maintained through measure
needs in fertilizers

Guided Question
 What is the other term for flood irrigation?
 What do you call the irrigation system where water is distributed across the land
through the use of watering cans?

C. Discussion
1. Explore
If you have a school garden, observe if there are pets or disease affecting its plants.
Take a picture of those identified plants with diseases or pets. Suggest possible solutions on
how to remove those pets and diseases and each group’s will be presented and report through
PPT to the whole class.
Guided Question
 How do diseases affect the plants?
 Which is the most common cause of plant disease?
2. Firm-up
Activity 1:
Form a group of four, each group will give a task in different committees to facilitate and
conduct the activity easily. Consider the following task force committees.
a. Program, letter and invitation d. registration
b. Stage and hall preparation e. reception
c. food
Activity 2:
Form a group of four, Students watch the given video clip about farmers documentary
Philippines. and each group’s will be presented to the whole class.
Guided Question
 What is the farmers program in the Philippines?
 What is the importance of Filipino farmers?
 What is the main problem of farmers in the Philippines?
3. Deepen
Performance Task1:
Make a compost pile in the garden. Select an area in the garden site that is at least 2m x 5m x 2m.
Acquire four shovelfuls of the garden soil.
a. Gather the following materials.
Carbon-rich “brown” materials Nitrogen-rich “green” materials
*Half sack of all leaves *Half sack of grass clippings
*Half sack of rice straws or corn stalks *Two pails of kitchen wastes like vegetable
*1 kg shredded news paper peelings or fruit feelings
*Half sack barnyard of animal manure

b. Spread half of the collected fall leaves, rice straws, or corn stalks, and half of the collected
barnyard of animal manure.
c. Top it with half of the gathered grass clippings and one pail of kitchen wastes.
d. Add two shovelfuls of garden soil.
e. Repeat steps b, c, two times
f. Moisten the three layers, but not until they are soggy.
g. Cover the pile for possible destruction and to protect it from rain.
h. Monitor the pile every week.
i. Use garden fork or a shovel to turn the pile.

IV-Transfer
A. Assignment.
Use the available land area at home and plant simple crops like eggplants, tomatoes and
ladyfingers. However, in the absence of an idle lot, make use of a pot to accomplish the activity.
Consider the following factors that effect the growth and development of the plants.
a. Type of soil
b. Fertilizer to use
c. Level of water application
d. Simple pruning
