Dear Pupils,

This module, Mathematics Quarter 2- Week 10 is written to further improve


your problem solving skills. This acquired skill would soon be applied in your
everyday lives.

This module contains four lessons that cover the following topics namely,
addition of integers, subtraction of integers, multiplication of integers and division of
integers. These topics are presented in such a way that they are easy to understand
and visualize.

The following are the special and unique features of this module:

 WHAT I NEED TO KNOW. This part presents the competency or the


objective that each learner should know and master
 WHAT’S NEW. This part of the module presents the content input of the topic
that will be discussed.
 WHAT IS IT. This contains the discussions of the topic which include
illustrative examples of the lesson.
 WHAT’S MORE. In this part, the first activity will be given to each learner.
 WHAT I HAVE LEARNED. Another activity will be answered by the pupils.
 ASSESSMENT. This is the last part of each topic in which another activity will
be given and answered by the learners to assess if each of them learned and
mastered the skill.

Learning Mathematics is fun. It is not as difficult as you think. We hope this


module can help you explore the world of mathematical concept in relation to your
everyday life.

Solving Word Problems Involving
1 Addition and Subtraction on
Integers
After completing the lesson, you are expected to:

solve routine and non-routine problems involving addition and


subtraction of integers using appropriate strategies and tools.

In the previous lessons, you have learned the different rules to follow in adding and
subtracting integers. In this lesson, you will be applying what you have learned in the
previous lessons by solving word problems involving addition and subtraction of
integers. We will be able to solve those problems by following certain steps and
using the right strategies and tools. Just like in our real life, we need to remember
that all problems that we encounter can be solved by finding the appropriate solution.

Illustrative Examples:
1. The teaching force of Capalaran Elementary School wanted to become
healthier and wanted to lose weight. After class, the teachers decided to jog
around the oval of Tangub City Sports Complex. On the first month, they lost a
total of 10 kilograms and lose 7 kilograms on the second month. How many
kilograms do they lose in two months?

Here are the steps in solving word problems.


1. Understand
a. What is asked?
The kilograms they lose in two months.
b. What are the given facts?
On the first month, they lose 10 kilograms.
On the second month, they lose 7 kilograms.

Strategy: Write a mathematical sentence
The problem can be solved by adding the given facts.
How do we represent a loss in 15 kilograms? -10
How do we represent a loss in 13 kilograms? -7

Therefore, the mathematical sentence is (-10) + (-7) = N

3. Solve
(-10) + (-7) = N Note: Follow the rules in adding integers.
(-10) + (-7) = -17

Answer: They lose 17 kilograms after two months.

4. Check
We can use a number line to check the answer.
Moving 7 units (lose in the second month) from -10 ( lose in the first month)

Thus, the answer is correct.

2. While inside the science laboratory, one of the grade 6 pupils noticed that the
temperature of the room was 9 Degrees Celsius. When the class ended and
transferred to computer laboratory, the pupil observed that the
temperature was -3 Degree Celsius. What changed in the temperature did the
grade 6 pupil experience?

We need to follow the steps in solving word problems.

1. Understand
a. What is asked?
The change in temperature experienced by the grade 6 pupil.
b. What are the given facts?
The temperature in Science laboratory is 9 Degree Celsius.
The temperature in Computer laboratory is -3 Degree Celsius.

2. Plan
Strategy: Write a mathematical sentence
The problem can be solved by subtracting the given facts.
How do we represent 9 Degree Celsius? +9
How do we represent 3 Degree Celsius? -3
Therefore, the mathematical sentence is (+9) -(-3) =

3. Solve
(+9) - (-3) = N Note: Follow the rules in subtracting integers.
(+9) + (+3) = +12
Answer: The change in temperature is 12 Degree Celsius.

4. Check
We can use a number line to check the answer.

out that one refrigerator has a temperature of -10 Degree Celsius and the
other has -4 Degree Celsius. What is the difference between the two
temperatures?

2. Joseph saved ₱15.00 from his allowance. From selling fruits, he also earned
₱65.00. How much money did Joseph have now?

in the afternoon. What was the temperature at Hoyohoy in the afternoon?

2. Mr. Magante borrowed ₱1500.00 in one of the banks in Tangub City. He also
borrowed ₱3500.00 in one of the banks in Ozamis without interest. If after 1 year
he needed to return the said amount, how much money did he need to pay the
two banks?

3. Tina sold ice candy in the school to get an allowance. On the first month, she
gained ₱23.00 and ₱30.00 on the next month. How much did she earn?

4. Enteng’s kite flies 35 ft above the ground and while the kite of his friend Tony flies
20 ft above the ground. What is the distance between the two objects?

5. The temperature at noon was 33 Degree Celsius. At 4pm, it was 18 Degree


Celsius. How many degrees did the temperature drop?

2 Multiplication and Division on
Integers

After completing the lesson, you are expected to:

division of integers using appropriate strategies and tools

In this lesson you will learn on how to solve word problems involving multiplication
and division of integers. We really need to remember the rules in multiplying and
dividing integers because those are essential factors in learning this topic. Just like
solving word problems involving addition and subtraction of integers, there are also
steps to follow in this particular topic.

Illustrative Examples
A certain Sari-Sari store located at Capalaran, Tangub City loses an average of 23
pesos in 12 days. How much money was lost over these twelve days?

Follow the steps in solving word problems.


1. Understand
a. What is asked?
- The amount of money that was lost over twelve days.
b. What are the given facts?
-The money lost per day is 23 pesos.
- The loss of money takes over 12 days.
2. Plan
Strategy: Write a mathematical sentence
The problem can be solved by multiplying the given facts.
How do we represent loss of 23 pesos? -23
How do we represent 12 days? +12
Therefore, the mathematical sentence is (-23) X (+12) = N

3. Solve
(-23) X (+12) = N Note: Follow the rules in multiplying integers.
(-23) X (+12) = -276
Answer: The sari-sari store loss 276 pesos over twelve days.

4. Check
We can check if our answer is correct by division. We will divide 276 pesos by
12 days to get the lost per day of the store which is 23 pesos. We have

The Division of Tangub City conducted a Boy Scout Camping at Taguite,
Tangub City. The pupils observed that during 6-hour period of stay, the
temperature dropped to 36 degrees Celsius. How many degrees did the
temperature drop each hour?
1. Understand
a. What is asked?
- The degree Celsius which the temperature dropped each hour.
b. What are the given facts?
- The number of hours the pupils observed the temperature is 6-hour
period.
- The temperature dropped to 36 degrees Celsius.

2. Plan
Strategy: Write a mathematical sentence

The problem can be solved by dividing the given facts.

How do we represent drop of temperature to 36 degrees Celsius? -36


How do we represent 6-hour period? +6
Therefore, the mathematical sentence is (-36) ÷ (+6) = N
3. Solve
(-36) ÷ (+6) = N Note: Follow the rules in dividing integers.
(-36) ÷ (+6) = -6

Answer: The temperature dropped to 6 degrees celsius each hour.

4. Check
We can check if our answer is correct by multiplication. We will multiply 6 by 6
which is the period of time observed by the pupils. We should get 36 as
the product. So, we have,6 x 6 = 36.Since we got 36, therefore, our
answer is correct.

of snacks and meals for 7 days. What was his average
