B) READING COMPREHENSION AND SHORT ANSWERS

QUESTIONS 9-18

Read the text and answer questions 9-18.

Ali took his seat and attempted to calm himself. He tried to make the sick feeling in his stomach
go away. He took a slow, deep breath and tried to think positive thoughts.

The invigilating teacher walked around the class to distribute the exam papers. Mr Lee
placed one on his desk and moved to the next table. Ali swallowed hard as he knew there was no
escape. He was going to answer the questions whether he knew how to do them or not. The
teacher started giving instructions and then it was crunch time. Everybody opened and flipped
through their papers.

Ali glanced around and saw that his Form 3A classmates all seemed to be confident and
eager to answer the questions. It made him even more frustrated. ‘I’m the only one who has
trouble with this paper,’ he despaired silently.

Ali kicked himself in his mind. ‘I should have practiced my algebra and linear equations
instead of playing video games with my friends last week.’ He knew the regret was too little and
too late. Finally, he forced himself to stop all the negative thoughts running wild in his brain.

‘I will do what I can now. I may not score in this paper, but I’m going to do my best. I’m
going to let this experience teach me to be more serious in my studies. This is the last time I’m
sitting for a paper unprepared and feeling this awful.’

His silent pep talk worked. With new-found determination, Ali began to tackle the exam
paper, hoping to at least pass the subject.
