Typing speed is defined as the number of words someone can accurately type in one minute or
words per minute. It was observed that students in grade eleven are always on their personal
computer some students spend longer period of time on their computer while some students
spend shorter period of time. A group of students decided to carry out an investigation to have an
accurate result for typing speed of the students from grade eleven, male versus females of
Richard Ishmael secondary school. Using the same paragraph and using the same amount of text.
In completing the investigation, the researcher’s objectives are as follows:
In carrying out the investigation (typing speed) of the grade eleven students, the researchers
asked student from each of the classes to type the same paragraph, the researchers used a stop
watch to record the time each student took. The researchers will tabulate the results, to show the
result of each student, to compare the difference between each one of the classes and find the
average speed of both male and female. The results will be interpreted on a variety of graphs. In
order to obtain how much words per minute the grade eleven students can type the researchers
would use the procedure of calculating all the typing characteristics in one minute and divided by
five.
Presentation of data
Title: The table below shows the results obtained from investigating the typing speed of the
females of grade eleven.

(Figure 1)
The bar graph above is shows the typing speed of males and females in the grade eleven level.
According to the graph which interprets the research it has shown that the males of grade eleven
type at a faster rate than the females. The female in the business class utilized most time in
typing this is so because three females typed from the Business Class , three from the science
class, one from the General class, one from the Tvet class and two from the Arts class while in
the male category three males from the Science class typed the slowest, followed by males from
the Business, Arts, general and Tvet classes respectively, however different amount of students
typed from each class and this limits the accuracy of which class typed the slowest and fastest. In
the overall grade eleven the Business class typed the slowest with three female students typing
from the class.
The Pie chart below shows the total average speed of the males and females from the
Grade Eleven Level.

The pie chart above illustrates the total average speed of the males and females from the grade
eleven level who each took the challenge of typing a stanza from a given poem. The females of
grade eleven level are represented by the Grey sector of the pie chart and the males are
represented by the blue sector, the male type is at a more rapid speed. The females took 172
seconds to type the stanza from the poem while the males took 191 seconds. The female gains a
percentage of 47 and the male gain percentage of 53.

(Figure 3)
The column graph above depicts how much words per minute the grade eleven students are
capable of typing. The male and female from the same class is represented by the same colour
but is presented in different columns. Different amount of students participated in the typing
activity from the various classes of the grade eleven level which cause some of the classes to
show that they type at a faster rate while another type at a slower rate. Grade eleven science male
took the longest time to type the stanza of poem in the overall while the grade eleven General
females typed more words per minute at a faster rate compared to the students of the Science
class. Followed by a Tvet female, Tvet male, arts female etc. it can be concluded that the
Business and science clasess had the most students who typed overall while Tvet had the least
student who typed.
Discussion of findings
It was expected that the Males of the Grade Eleven male would type at a faster rate than the
females but the actual result showed the complete opposite, insisted the females typed at a faster
rate. The students of grade eleven were each given a stanza from a poem to type. When the
students were typing the researchers were timing each of the students who participated in the
typing activity using a stop watch. After obtaining the results, it was tabulated and graphs were
plotted for the purpose of comparing the males and females of the Grade Eleven level, the
average typing speed of the males and the females of the grade eleven level and how much
words per minute the male and female can type were compared. The comparison between the
males and females were completed by finding the total seconds of both male and female, the
average typing speed was found by diving the total typing speed by the number of students who
participated in the activity (ten students) so as to determine how many words per minute both
males and females can type within the time period hence the total was divided by five.
Conclusion
The Typing speed activity was chosen and done at our very own high school, Richard Ishmael
Secondary School with the aim of determining how capable and effectively the students, directly
male versus females can type a given stanza. They were all able to type a stanza from the poem
so as to give the researchers an idea as to their functionality in an office and other jobs that
require typing.
At the beginning of the research the researchers had assumed that the males would have been
able to type at a faster rate when compared to the females, but however after the task was
completed out the results showed that the females had a much faster speed when calculated.
Which therefore states that if placed into an office or other Facility that requires typing to be
done females would have a greater capability of carrying out task given than that of a male.
