NATA (NATIONAL APTITUDE TEST IN

ARCHITECTURE)
Your first step towards becoming eligible for a B. Arch & Planning degree.
National Aptitude Test In Architecture (NATA), All India Examination conducted
on a single day by COA (Council of Architecture) since 2006, as per Regulations
1983, published in Gazette of India. The objective of the exam is to provide a
single window clearance towards facilitation of Institutions, students and public at
large for admission towards 5 year B.Arch courses at all recognized institutions
over the country. There are about 450 institutions presently imparting Architectural
education in India towards recognized qualifications. However the actual
admissions are carried out by the concerned competent authorities of the respective
Institutions/ states based on NATA .The objective of conducting an exam of All
India stature is to measure the Aptitude & competence of candidate who
undertakes such studies.

Assessment in NATA includes the below mentioned

topics
 Drawing & Observation skills
 A sense of Proportion
 Aesthetic sensitivity
 Mathematics
 Critical Thinking ability

The question paper consists of 2 parts. Part –A, comprising Multiple choice
Questions (Online) & Part B consisting of Drawing (Off line) which we shall
discuss in detail in the coming sections.
Am I Eligible ?
This has been one of the profound questions of the century post a Philosophical
question that raised debates and concerns in the early 18th century on how many
“Angels can be balanced in a single point of needle”?. Why such theatrical verbal
debauchery is observed stems from the fact of confusion prevalent in the NATA
corridors while taking into account Eligibility towards NATA Exam. The
confusion prevails on the respect of students to have Maths, Physics & Chemistry
as primary subjects or should he only have Maths as a subject towards eligibility
compensation. For the moment I shall stick to information Published through the
official NATA Brochure http://www.nata.in/NATA2018-Brochure.pdf.

The below Eligibility is mentioned is as exacted in

the brochure:-
 10+2 (Passed or Appearing in the current year )or equivalent examination of
Central state Govts with 50% aggregate marks and with Mathematics as a
compulsory subject of Examination
 10+3 Diploma ( any stream) recognized by Central/ State Govt.with 50%
aggregate marks with Mathematics as a compulsory subject of Examination
 International Baccalaureate Diploma passed / appearing, after 10 years of
schooling with 50% marks in aggregate and with Mathematics as compulsory
subject of Examination.

What is my Competition in NATA Exam?

This question should be relevant to you as you are the one writing the exam.
However to give a sense of what you are being pitted with, 2017-2018 had 45000
students registered for the Exam of which 40,000 (approx.) appeared. Results were
not bad with more than 35 250 (approx.) clearing the exam successfully. 2018
witnessed a variation in gender with more number of Female candidates appearing
towards cracking this exam. One of the most popular Exams after engineering and
medical, the growth appears to be at a % of 18-20 year on year. A reason cited for
the same can be towards the inherent popularity /nobility and Respect of the
discipline, informed opinion among the general public & Ample opportunities in
the Public & Private sector and the niche it reserves for candidates with Creative
skills.
Let’s Discuss Question Paper and Pass Percentage
The NATA question paper is out of 200 marks in total with 3 hours’ time frame to
complete. The question Paper consists of 2 Parts. Part A- with Mathematics &
General Aptitude( Multiple Choice Questions) and Part –B with Drawing.

Part A consists of a total of 60 Questions with 20 questions in Mathematics of 2

marks each and 40 questions of 2 marks each in Aptitude. Mind you, there are
students who have scored full marks in these sections in 2017-2018 examinations.
A relief for NATA exam is that there is no Negative Marking, and the candidate
does have the opportunity to score full marks without any apprehensions on score.

Part –B, Drawing consists of 2 questions of 40 marks. One important factor to be

considered is the logic that applies to this part where unlike Part A, there are a few
things you need to look at towards scoring maximum marks. It is to be reminded
that no one till date has scored a full mark in the drawing part. Some of the tips that
I can impart here towards improving your chances of scoring marks would be to
place more practice towards Memory drawing, compositions, Lighting and
shading, proportions, colour ( applications & theory), Shading, lighting, texturing
etc. . Like the saying goes, droplets of water makes an ocean , the saying is apt
here with each and every aspect scrutinized emphatically, towards better scoring
opportunity. Part A- will be Computer based & Part B- shall be paper based.

It has to be noted that both the sections have to be cleared with cut off percentage
as prescribed by the NATA board for you to be deemed as PASS.

Below is the pass percentage in different section

 A minimum of 25% must be secured in MCQ Portion ( 30 marks out of 120 )
 A Minimum of 25% must be secured in Drawing portion ( 20 marks out of 80)

Over all qualifying marks in NATA would be based on post exam statistics and at
the discretion of the council.

Let’s cover the topics for the Exam:-

Subjects such as Mathematics constitute 12 STD levels of portions. But the trick
here is to understand the pattern of questions, Tips and Tricks to quickly solve
problems, given the fact that no form of electronic gadgets are allowed inside the
Exam hall. So the only reliable option is your mental capability and capacity
towards problem computation and solutions

Counselling and Admission Procedures

It must be noted here that appearing for NATA and obtaining a valid NATA score
card doesn’t entitle admission to various Architect colleges and henceforth remains
at the discretion of the participating colleges according to Merit list and rank as
prescribed by them. The counselling for NATA is only held post announcement of
the results every year in the month of July. The candidate must obtain a valid score
in both the NATA Exam & state board/CBSE/ICSE etc. The final score of

as his or hers State/ CBSE/ ICSE or any other qualifying exam with Maths as one

merit list and some colleges have 3-4 rounds of counselling as well. Now for
students who do not get through the counselling, a few colleges offer management
