Introduction

• Joseph Louis Lambot (1848): ferro-cement

• I World War: 12 concrete ships (US)
• II World War: 24 concrete ships (US)
• More than 500
ships around the
world

Concrete

• Watertight material
• Low cost
• High performance
• Workability

Concrete

• Excellent durability in marine environment

• Fire resistance
• Fatigue resistant
• Less susceptible to corrosion, wich reduces
the needs for inspection and maintenance
Steel

• Steel rods in concrete hull is the same used

in concrete buildings
• Steel rods is fabricated in more quantity
than naval steel
• Steel rods are cheaper than naval steel
Structure

• Simple arrangement
• Thickness with gradually changing
• Hull performance improved by different
composition of concrete
• Higher resistance to damage due to impact
Construction method

• Traditional concrete construction method

– Slip forming
– Jump forming
• Dry-dock or dry-basin and floating
• Lesser capacity level of manpower
Construction method

• Formworks
– Steel
– Wood
– Aluminium
• Restrictions
– Draught
– Retraction effects
– Difficulty to control the mixture
Cost

• Equivalent cost to
construct
• Lower maintenance
cost
• Minor construction
time

• Ekofisk (fixed): 1973 – new technologies,

materials and methods
• 30 concrete offshore platforms (gravity and
floating types)

Conclusions

• Concrete ships are not economically viable

for peacetime trading but concrete barges
have proven economical when used as
stationary offshore structures
• In spite of a large displacement, the total
cost, good mechanical and chemical
properties takes advantages against steel
hull
• Social and economical development of less
endowed regions
