EMERGENCY GENERATOR SET AND ITS MAINTENANCE

INTRODUCTION

In today's environment, nothing can be taken for granted. Weather situations like wind and lightning strikes
can cause power outages for a few seconds to hours. Explosions and fire can severe lines to your facilities.
Sometimes we simply experience blackouts because our utility systems are affected due to issues such as
power quality and harmonics. Whatever the cause, lack of electricity at your facilities can be devastating,
whether you are at a hospital caring for the sick and injured, a treatment plant providing water for the
community, a computer-oriented business or a manufacturing plant or data center that simply can't afford
downtime.

In the two days of technical training on gen.sets, the participants would be able to acquire sufficient
knowledge and the necessary skill to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot gen.sets with minimum
assistance from external sources. This would enormously reduce time and money for the organization. The
trainer will ensure that the participants will learn the techniques on how to maintain and upkeep the
gen.sets in working conditions at all times.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

➢ Understand the principles, construction, operation, maintenance and testing of Emergency Diesel
gen-sets (comprising of both diesel engine and AC generator.
➢ Able to understand the various components of a diesel engine and their functions.
➢ Able to understand the various components of an AC generator and their functions.
➢ Able to understand various types of field excitation used for the generators.
➢ Able to understand the construction, operation, and the maintenance of Batteries used to operate
the gen.sets.
➢ Able to understand the role of battery chargers used and the correct methods to be used in charging
the batteries for gen.sets.
➢ Parallel operation of gen.sets, the required conditions and the methods used in carrying out
parallel operation.
